An Egyptian court has sentenced 26 people to death for plotting attacks on ships in the Suez Canal. The men, who were tried in their absence, were charged while in custody. The court accuses the defendents of founding and leading a terrorist cell, which wanted to disrupt the major shipping route. It also referred the verdict to the Grand Mufti of Cairo, who now has to validate the sentences. The recent spate of violence has rocked Egypt, after former president Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the military in July, and placed under arrest. The latest ruling comes as another court in the country sentenced over 2-hundred Morsi supporters to prison over a variety of charges on Tuesday.

They say the court martial is just a cover-up because the accused enjoy the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. That act gives legal immunity to Indian forces in Kashmir and forbids their prosecution without the sanction from the Indian government. According to rights activists, hundreds of security personnel face charges of murder, rape, and arrest in Kashmir, but prosecution against them has been hindered due to the special powers. The army has ordered court martial proceedings against the accused army soldiers in Machil fake encounter. But it remains to be seen whether the real perpetrators of the crime will be brought to justice in the near future.

The foreign ministers of Iran and Turkey have called for a ceasefire in Syria before the upcoming peace talks in Geneva. The statement came in a joint news conference between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu in Tehran. The two sides added that foreign-backed militants must leave Syria, and refugees should be allowed to return home. Davutoglu said foreign intervention in Syria is not constructive, and that Iran should take part in the upcoming Geneva-two peace conference.

A court in Cairo has sentenced thirty-eight Al-Azhar University students to jail for their recent protest in support of Egypt\'s ousted president Mohamed Morsi. The Nasr city misdemeanor court sentenced the students to eighteen months in prison. Last week, twelve pro-Morsi students from the same university were sentenced to seventeen years in jail in a similar case. Egyptian security forces stormed the dormitory of Al-Azhar University on Wednesday, killing a student and wounding dozens of others. They also detained dozens of pro-Morsi students and set one of the buildings on the university campus on fire. Egypt has been gripped by political turmoil and street protests since the army\'s ouster of Morsi in early July.

Iraq has been witnessing another bloody day. At least 54 people have been killed in a series of bombings. Nearly a dozen explosives-laden cars went off in five different areas across Baghdad province. The explosives which targeted busy streets and markets in mainly Shia-populated districts left 42 people dead and 80 others injured. Elsewhere, 12 people-- among them soldiers, died when a bomb exploded in the city of Mosul, northwest of Baghdad. 20 others were also wounded. Sunday\'s blasts bring to over 620 the number of Iraqis who\'ve been killed so far this month. The Arab country has been hit by fresh violence since the beginning of 2013. Based on official estimates, more than 53-hundred people-- mostly civilians have lost their lives this year.

The Syrian army steps up its attacks against foreign-backed insurgents and their strongholds across the country. Army units ambushed militants of the Liwa\'a al-Islam, a brigade of the al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front in Eastern Goutah, near the capital Damascus, killing scores of them. Syrian sources say many of the dead were foreign nationals. A large cache of weaponry including anti-tank missiles were also seized. Several militants of anther al-Qaeda-affiliated group known as Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant were also killed in clashes with Syrian forces near Aleppo. Meanwhile, people in several towns across the Aleppo Province demonstrated against armed groups, demanding their pullout from civilian areas. Elsewhere, Kurdish fighters engaged in battles with insurgents in a town near Iraqi border.

The spillover of the Syrian crisis has claimed more lives in the flashpoint northern Lebanese city of Tripoli. Ten people, including a woman, have been killed in clashes between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over the weekend. At least 70 people have also been wounded. Our Beirut correspondent Ali Rizk sees the latest incidents as part of a larger picture. He says Saudi Arabia is losing its sphere of influence compared to regional players, and is therefore trying to regain its power by resorting to violence by proxy.

The United Nations has criticized Israel for destroying 30 Palestinian properties in the Occupied West Bank. UN Humanitarian Coordinator James Rawly says the demolitions have resulted in the displacement of 41 people, including 24 children. Rawly says some of the families have been displaced for the second time in less than two weeks. Rights groups say the demolitions are aimed at grabbing more land for Israel\\\'s settlements and military projects in the occupied Palestinian Territories. Israel has built thousands of settler units in the occupied territories despite international condemnation. The settlements are considered illegal under international law.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has opened its Conference of the States Parties in The Hague. Top on the agenda is the organization\'s mission to get Syrian chemical stockpiles out of the country by the year-end for final destruction. Meanwhile, Iran\'s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham has said that Iran will actively participate in the conference. She added that as a victim of chemical weapons used by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, Iran will be influential in the decisions made by the O-P-C-W. Iran\'s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will also make a speech at the conference on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement. Russia traditionally marks the International Day of Solidarity with the People of Palestine on the 29th of November. The day was marked with a gala, attended by high-level guests, from Russia and Palestine.

The Israeli military has launched three airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, targeting the northern, southern, and eastern parts of the besieged Palestinian territory. Palestinian officials say three explosions were heard in the territory. Rescue teams and ambulances have rushed to the areas. At least 8 Palestinians have been injured in southern Gaza town of Rafah. Two Palestinians have also been injured in the north. Tel Aviv claims the air strikes were carried out in response to a rocket fired from Gaza. The Israeli military often targets Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which remains cut off from the outside world by a crippling blockade.
