At least nine people have been killed and dozens wounded in different incidents across Iraq. The deadliest incident that involved six fatalities took place in the northern city of Kirkuk when gunmen attacked a shopping mall. Officials say the shootout with the gunmen lasted for two hours. At least 47 people are believed to have been injured in the gun battle. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet. But such incidents are usually blamed on militants affiliated to al-Qaeda, who have strongholds around Kirkuk. At least three other people are said to have been killed in separate incidents in Baghdad, Fallujah and Tikrit. Violence in Iraq has surged over the past few months. The fatalities from the start of the year so far have now exceeded 62-hundred.

At least three people have been killed as a blast rips through the Lebanese town of Hermel in the northeast. Medical sources say over 30 others have also been injured, with the number of casualties likely to rise. The car bomb detonated at the town\'s main square, in front of a state building. Hermel is located 10 kilometers from the Syrian border. The town has a pro-Hezbollah majority population and has witnessed numerous rocket attacks by foreign-backed insurgents in Syria. Thursday\'s blast comes barely two weeks after another explosion hit a southern neighborhood of Beirut. Several people were killed and scores wounded in that attack, for which an al-Qaeda-related group claimed responsibility.

A Syrian opposition leader has hailed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for expressing support for insurgents wounded during the conflict in Syria. Muhammad Badie said the Syrian opposition is grateful to Netanyahu for his Thursday\'s visit to a field hospital in the occupied Golan Heights. Israeli doctors are treating Syrians, including anti-government militants, there. The Turkey-based leader added that Netanyahu\'s visit sent an important message. During the visit, the Israeli premier said that giving medical care to Syrians shows the true face of Israel. Syria and Israel are virtually at war. Last year, the Israeli military carried out at least three airstrikes against Syria. Damascus accuses Tel Aviv and its Western allies of aiding al-Qaeda-linked insurgent groups.

A rocket has been fired from Gaza to Israel after Israeli forces shot and wounded a 16-year old Palestinian in the northern Gaza Strip. The rocket fell in an open area in Eshkol Regional Council. An explosion was reportedly heard in the nearby area but no injuries or damage has been reported. The missile came several hours after a Palestinian teen was shot in the leg in Jabalia. The Israeli military claims the teenager was seen damaging a fence. Attacks by Israeli forces on Palestinians have recently escalated. On Sunday, two people were wounded by Israeli tank shells in central Gaza.

President: Gaza, Test Field for So-Called Human Rights Advocates TEHRAN (FNA)- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Saturday night that Gaza is a test field for the so-called human rights advocates proving invalidity of their claims for supporting human rights. He made the remarks commenting on Saturday's savage attacks of the Zionist regime on Gaza when Israeli F-16 bombers attacked the city and fired around 30 missiles into the densely populated areas of Gaza. The attacks killed 225 people and wounded 400 others. The horrific brutality of Israel against civilians have triggered international outrage and shocked world public opinion. "All theories of secularism, humanism and liberalism have proved to be inefficient in the test field of Palestine, Gaza Strip in particular," the president said according to the Islamic republic news agency. Addressing a local seminar, he added, "We have witnessed today in news reports that the innocent Gazans were surrendered by the most savage and indecent people of history." Condemning Israeli leaders for their crimes against humanity, President Ahmadinejad strongly criticized the indifference of the United Nations Security Council and those of the Western countries towards the Israeli war crimes in Gaza. "Those who issue a resolution when their pets are hit by a car, showed no reaction to the slaughter of the women and children who are deprived of the least living facilities," said the president. He added that the world should mourn the massacre of innocent people in Gaza. "The ideology of Zionism and its dominance have reached the end line. Zionists are at the end of the road both in theory and practice in all economic, political, military and cultural terms," President Ahmadinejad added. He noted that the Zionists were to take revenge of innocent people now that have realized their era have come to an end.

Palestinian killed in Israeli air attack At least one Palestinian has been killed in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip as the acting Palestinian Authority chief and the Israeli prime minister prepare to hold their third direct meeting. Three others were also wounded in the attack which was carried out against a Palestinian "survival tunnel" in Rafah along the Gaza-Egypt border on Wednesday. The tunnels, which link the south of the impoverished enclave to Egypt, have been serving as conduits for vital supplies to the besieged Gaza Strip since June 2007, when Israel imposed a crippling blockade on the costal sliver. The perilous tunnels have been frequently attacked by Israeli and Egyptian security forces. The Israeli army has not commented on the air attack yet. The attack coincided with the third round of meetings between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and acting Palestinian chief Mahmoud Abbas to end the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This little girl is another war victim. Aysha has been badly wounded by a US air strike. President Karzai paid her a visit in a military hospital. Aysha lost her whole family when a US drone hit their home in eastern Kunar province. The Afghan president complained to US Secretary of State here in Kabul about what happened to Ashya. But drone attacks continue to target civilians. The US is not willing to stop them and its military men are very proud of their drones. They claim the air strikes target terrorists and there is no collateral damage. People here, however, find their claim funny asking themselves that how can a child---like-Ashya---be a terrorist? Aysha does not know why her dad and mom were killed. But she knows who is responsible for their deaths. Drone war expanded here right when US President Barack Obama took office. Campaigning for the White House in 2008, Obama did say that he would embrace drones to go after what he named 9/11 terrorists. But it seems the wrong people have been targeted. So it is mostly civilians who continue to remain vulnerable to drone attacks. Over 447 strikes were launched here last year, killing and wounding about 2,500 people. This year may prove to be even deadlier.

Another shooting incident in the US. A shooter at a middle school in Nevada shot a teacher dead and injured two other students before turning the gun on himself. The incident happened just before the scheduled start of classes. Reports say the shooter was a student at the school. The middle school and an elementary school next door were evacuated after the shooting. The incident was the latest in a string of shooting rampages across the United States in recent years, which have reignited a national debate over gun control.

Medics tell Press TV they have found traces of depleted uranium in some Gazan residents wounded in Israel's ground offensive into the strip. Norwegian medics told Press TV correspondent Akram al-Sattari that some of the victims who have been wounded since Israel began its attacks on the Gaza Strip on December 27 have traces of depleted uranium in their bodies. The report comes after Israeli tanks and troops swept across the border into Gaza on Saturday night, opening a ground operation after eight days of intensive attacks by Israeli air and naval forces on the impoverished region. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned on Sunday that the wide-ranging ground offensive in the Gaza Strip would be "full of surprises." A ground offensive in the densely-populated Gaza is expected to drastically increase the death toll of the civilian population. The latest assaults bring the number of Palestinians killed to over 488 with 2790 others wounded. The UN says that about 25 percent of the casualties were civilian deaths - including at least 34 children. According to Israeli army officials, at least 30 of its soldiers have been wounded since the start of the ground campaign. Amid global condemnation of the ongoing violence in the region, the UN Security Council failed to agree on a united approach to resolve the crisis. "Once again, the world is watching in dismay the dysfunctionality of the Security Council," UN General Assembly chief Miguel d'Escoto said Sunday. According to diplomatic sources, the US blocked a Security Council resolution, with US Deputy Ambassador Alejandro Wolff arguing that an official statement that criticizes both Israel and Hamas would not be helpful. The White House has so far declined to comment on whether an Israeli ground incursion into Gaza is a justified measure.
