Massive anti-US rallies held in Pakistan Thousands of people have held anti-US demonstrations across Pakistan to protest an American court's verdict against a female Pakistani scientist. The protests on Friday come after a New York court sentenced 38-year-old Aafia Siddiqui to 86 years in prison. Hundreds of police officers were deployed across the capital Islamabad to stop angry protesters from marching into the US Embassy. In Siddiqui's hometown of Karachi, police fired tear gas to prevent protesters from moving towards the US consulate. In Multan, scores of activists including lawyers blocked traffic. Siddiqui has been found guilty of allegedly trying to kill FBI agents and US military service members in Afghanistan. Human rights groups argue that she was kidnapped and held in secret US prisons abroad. Political activists and Siddiqui's relatives have strongly criticized the US justice system for its handling of the case. After a brief period of relative calm in the port city of Karachi, the incidents of sectarian targeted killings once again claimed the lives of two members of the shia community including an ex-secretary of Shia ulema council, Kauser Zaidi. Furious participants of the funeral procession, behind me, are demanding what they call their primary right of security from the state which they say has failed so far to deliver this right. The men who unsuccessfully tried to kill Zaidi in August finally accomplished their mission on Friday at Pakistan Chowk, a place near to the financial street of Pakistan, the II Chindrigar road. The 50-year-old former secretary of the Shia Ulema Council was shot at close range as he was on his way home with his wife. She emerged unscathed. Just three hours later, another Shia man was gunned down in the city. The city witnessed a relative peace after the apex court of the country started hearing of Karachi violence in Ramadan. Observers believe that this may start a new wave of violence in Karachi as Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar is approaching. The Shia community in Balochistan also came under intense attack recently when about 29 people were killed in two separate, targeted incidents including an attack in Mastung on pilgrims heading to Iran. According to the Human Rights commission of Pakistan, over 1400 people were killed during the first eight months of the 2011 because of ethnic, sectarian and political violence. Experts say although the raids have been started by the law enforcement agencies against those responsible, following the Supreme court\\\'s verdict over Karachi violence, but due to the politicization of these institutions, results of these crackdowns will be limited.

[04 June 2012] 'Voters seek Islamic system in Egypt' - English Egyptians vented their anger at presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq who urged them to accept the life sentence issued for Mubarak and his officers. Security sources say dozens of angry protesters attacked Shafiq's campaign headquarters in two provincial towns, one of which in Fayyoum south of the capital Cairo and the other one in Hurghada on the Red Sea. Shafiq's campaign headquarters in Cairo had already been attacked last Monday. Besides supporting Mubarak's verdict, Shafiq has lashed out at his Muslim Brotherhood rival. Press TV has conducted an interview with Waleed el-Haddad, spokesperson of Freedom and Justice Party.

[05 Aug 2012] Iran judicial body revokes a decree by social security fund - English He was appointed by Iran's President to lead one of the countries wealthiest economic foundations, Iran's social security fund; but according to Iran's administrative court of justice his appointment is illegal. In a case pushed by some MP's, Saeed Mortazavi former judge and Tehran prosecutor was officially called off from the position through a direct court order published in official newspapers. Despite the verdict, Iran's Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi said that Mortazavi will maintain the post as managing director of the social security fund.

Russia\'s Leading opposition leader is sentenced to five years in prison - a punishment that is set to turn Aleksei Navalny who recently declared his candidacy for mayor of Moscow, from an opposition activist to a political dissident and prisoner. Navalny denies the charges, saying the case is politically motivated. After the guilty verdict many took to the streets. In Moscow, even before the sentence was announced, supporters and the police began to gather at Manezh Square near the Kremlin where backers of Navalny had planned to hold an unsanctioned rally.

In Qatar, a top court upholds a 15-year jail term for a poet who criticized Arab regimes in the Persian Gulf for crushing pro-democracy protests. Qatar\'s Court of Cassation confirmed the sentence given to Muhammad Ibn al-Dheeb al-Ajami by an appeals court in February. The ruling is the final verdict from the highest court in the country. His lawyer has described the sentence as a political decision. Ajami was arrested in November 2011 and is accused of insulting the Emir of Qatar. Ajami\'s poem criticizes the ruling families for being dependent on US forces for the glory of their country instead of relying on their own people. Qatar is home to a major US military base.

Anti-regime demonstrations rage on in Bahrain, despite the heavy-handed crackdown on protesters. In the latest round of protests, regime forces used tear gas to disperse protesters in Abu Saiba, west of the capital Manama. Earlier on Friday, a mass rally was held to condemn a controversial ruling by a Bahraini court which disbanded a Shia Muslim clerical body. The verdict against the Islamic Scholars Council came in a lawsuit filed by Bahrain\'s Justice Ministry accusing the organization of promoting sectarianism. The move has been criticized by the opposition and human rights groups, who say it is part of the regime\'s efforts to silence the voice of dissent. Since 2011, anti-regime demonstrations have been held almost every day in Bahrain, in defiance of the deadly crackdown.

An Egyptian court has sentenced 26 people to death for plotting attacks on ships in the Suez Canal. The men, who were tried in their absence, were charged while in custody. The court accuses the defendents of founding and leading a terrorist cell, which wanted to disrupt the major shipping route. It also referred the verdict to the Grand Mufti of Cairo, who now has to validate the sentences. The recent spate of violence has rocked Egypt, after former president Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the military in July, and placed under arrest. The latest ruling comes as another court in the country sentenced over 2-hundred Morsi supporters to prison over a variety of charges on Tuesday.
