This is a ‘meccan’ surah. At takathur signifies, \"the contending among people for superiority in the amount of property or number of children and men.\" It keeps man heedless of the hereafter, having no time for spiritual life. It is reported that the people of Bani Abd Munaf, Bani Qu-asi and Bani Sahm had an inordinate craving for acquisition of more and more wealth and adherents or supporters. When once they dug up the graves of their followers to count even the dead to prove the superiority of one tribe over the other this surah was revealed. Rivalry in such things monopolises the attention of individuals and communities and leaves no time for higher purposes of life and spiritual attainments, therefore a clear warning is given in this verse for devotion of some time to spiritual attainments also. The Holy Prophet (saw) said that whoever recites this surah before going to sleep at night will be saved from the torments of the grave. If this surah is recited in faraa’idh prayers, the reciter will get the reward of a hundred martyrs. If recited in the nawafil prayers, he will get the reward of fifty martyrs. It is especially recommended to recite surah at-Takathur in the ‘Asr prayers and the person who does this remains under the protection of ALLAH (swt) until the day ends. Recitation of this surah is a cure from headaches. Another way of reciting salaat al-Wahshat (apart from the commonly known way) is to recite Ayatul Kursi once and surah al-Ikhlas twice after the Surah al-Hamd of the first rak’aat and then recite surah at-Takaathur ten times after the Surah al-Hamd of the second rak’aat.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. The Quraysh, among whom the Holy Prophet (s) was born, was a tribe held in great esteem, as the guardians of the holy Ka-bah, by the Arabs. They were the descendants of prophet Ibrahim (as) through his son Ismail (as). The custody of the sacred shrine of the Ka-bah enabled them to obtain covenants of security from the rulers of neighbouring countries on all sides on account of which they travelled to Syria in summer, and to Yemen in winter, to carry out their trade. Their trade caravans enriched them, united them, and drew people from distant parts to visit Makka, to bring and take from there merchandise of various kinds. This honour and advantage they owed to their position as servants of the sacred house. They owed it to Allah. It was therefore right and fitting that they should worship Allah alone and accept as true the religion of Allah, Islam, brought by the Holy Prophet. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) said that the one who recites this surah will get the reward of ten times the number of people performing Tawaaf and I’tekaaf. The recitation of surah al-Feel and al-Quraysh in the compulsory prayers carries great reward. If this surah is recited on food, its ill effects are removed. Those with heart ailments should recite this surah and then gently blow into some drinking water and drink it. If a poor person recites this surah before sunrise, ALLAH (swt) will make it easy for him to get his sustenance.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. This surah condemns those who slander others, whether by speech or action, and imagine that their own wealth will keep them immune from death, and describes, in brief yet evocative phrases, the doom of Hell which awaits them.The Holy Prophet (s) said that the reward for reciting this surah can be compared to ten times the number of disbelievers who were present in Makkah. Reciting surah al-Humazah in compulsory prayers keeps a person safe from poverty. Sustenance comes towards him. His death will not be of a sudden and terrifying nature. This surah is also a cure for pain in the eyes and should be recited before blowing gently into the eyes for relief from pain. Keeping this surah in a talisman around one’s neck acts as a protection from the ‘evil eye’.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. In a tradition from the Holy Prophet (saw) it is said that the reward for reciting surah Aadiyat is equivalent to ten times the number who are present in Arafah and Muzdalifa at the time of Hajj. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) has said that those people who recite surah Aadiyat everyday, will be counted from the companions of Ameerul Mu’mineen (as) and it has also been narrated that reciting this surah daily carries the reward of reciting the entire Qur’an. If a person has many creditors, recitation of this surah will help clear his debts. If recited by a person in fear, this surah brings him to safety; if recited by a hungry person, it helps in his finding sustenance; if recited by a thirsty person, his thirst will be quenched.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) urged believers to recite this surah in their prayers as it is the surah of Imam Hussein (as) and the one who recites it often will be in the company of Imam Hussein (as) on the Day of Judgement. It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (s) that the one who recites this surah, ALLAH (swt) will forgive his sins amounting to ten times the number of people who recite this surah. On the Day of Reckoning he will have a shining light. If this surah is written as a talisman and then tied to one’s back, after which he goes into his wife, then ALLAH (s.w.t.) will give him a child who will be a means of pride and blessings for him.

This is a “meccan” surah. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) has advised that this surah should be recited often in prayers as this is a sign of faith. The Holy Prophet (saw) has said that reciting this surah makes the accounting of deeds on the Day of Reckoning easier. If this surah is worn as a talisman by a pregnant woman, her baby will be remain safe InshALLAH. Giving water in which this surah has been dissolved to a child will make his/her memory and intellect improve. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) said that the one who recites this surah his/her faith will remain firm.

This is a “meccan” surah. The Holy Prophet (s) said that if a person recites this surah frequently in his prayers then on the Day of Judgement there will be no curtain between ALLAH (swt) and himself and when his book of deeds will be opened, ALLAH (swt) will protect him from humiliation. If a prisoner writes this surah and keeps it with him, he will be released sooner and he will be saved from any dangers. It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) that even if the sins of the one who recites this surah are equal to the drops of rain, he will still be forgiven. This surah is also good for the eyes and one should blow gently into the eyes after reciting this surah.

This is a “meccan” surah. In the commentary of Majma’ul Bayan it is narrated from the Holy Prophet (saw) that the reward for reciting this surah is ten times the number of moving winds or breezes. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) has said that recitation of this surah increases ones sustenance and makes it easy to earn. Drinking water in which this surah was dissolved (after being written) acts as a remedy for back problems (e.g. backaches). If a pregnant woman wears a talisman of surah adh-Dhariyat, her pregnancy and delivery will be easy. Keeping this surah close to a dying person makes his death easy.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. This surah refers to an incident in the history of Makka, as an example of how ALLAH (swt) deals with those who oppose HIS will. About fifty days before the birth of the Holy Prophet, Abraha, the Abyssinia\'s viceroy of Yemen, Christian by religion, proceeded against Makka, as the head of a large army, with the object of destroying the Kaabah, because he wanted that there should be no place or structure more glorious than the church he was building at Sana. He had with him elephants. Therefore he and his army is known as ashab al fil, those who brought elephants. At the outskirts of Makka he captured a large number of camels belonging to the chief of Makka, Abd al Muttalib, the grandfather of the Holy Prophet. After receiving the information that Abraha was coming to destroy the holy Ka-bah, Abd al Muttalib went to see him and said: \"I have come to collect my camels. The Ka-bah belongs to God. He will surely protect it from your evil design.\" Abraha gave the captured camels to Abd al Muttalib He returned to the city and asked the people to retire to the neighbouring hills, leaving the Lord of Ka-bah to protect it. When Abraha entered Makka, suddenly a large flock of birds, like swallows, came flying from the sea-coast and pelted the invading army with pebbles of baked clay. They all died. They were like a dead and useless field from which all the produce is eaten up and only straw with stubble is left. Abraha escaped and went directly to the king in Abyssinia. All the way a bird with a stone in her beak followed him. When the king asked Abraha as to what kind of birds they were, Abraha looked to the sky and the bird at once dropped stone in her beak and killed him on the spot.The lesson to be drawn is twofold. The pagans of Makka were forewarned that as the Holy Prophet was superior to the Kaabah, ALLAH, who protects whatever is HIS own, shall protect him from all their evil schemes. It is also a warning to men in all ages that \"if a man intoxicated with power comes out to defeat ALLAH\'s holy plan, he cannot prevail against ALLAH (swt), but his plan will fail and destroy him as well.“ It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) that whoever recites this surah in his faraa’idh prayers, the mountains will bear witness on the Day of Judgement that he prayed and he will be taken to Jannah on the command of ALLAH (swt). The person who recites this surah is kept safe from his enemies and has his difficulties and problems solved quickly. Recitation of this surah is also helpful in remaining safe from evil tyrant rulers.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. The Holy Prophet (saw) has said that whoever recites this surah will be safe from the Wrath of ALLAH (swt) on the Day of Reckoning. Those who recite this surah in their faraa’idh prayers, will be counted among the pious and will given a highly status in the company of the Prophets and martyrs. Writing this surah as a talisman and tying it around the neck of a child keeps him/her safe from illness. Water in which this surah has been dissolved, if put in the nostrils, acts as a cure for nose ailments.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. The Holy Prophet (saw) has said that the reward for reciting this surah is equivalent to ten times the number of heavenly bodies in space. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) has narrated that if surah at-Taariq is recited in compulsory prayers, then the reciter is honoured by ALLAH (swt) and will get the opportunity of being with the Prophets (as). Reciting this surah over anything keeps it safe. If recited before taking medicine, then the medicine will be a sure cure. The water in which this surah has been dissolved should be poured gently on a wound and it will heal with the Grace of ALLAH (swt).

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (saw) that a person who recites this surah will never face bad times. The person who recites it in the Isha or Tahajjud prayers always remains pure of heart and even dies while he/she is in a pure state. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) said that a person who recites this surah properly will get a chance to meet the Holy Prophet (saw) and if he/she prays for a specific wish he/she will get InshALLAH. Reciting surah al-Muzammil a hundred times on Thursday night leads to the forgiving of a hundred major sins and procures a hundred rewards. Recitation of this surah protects one from insanity and from being a slave to people.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) has said that whoever recites this surah everyday will be fortunate enough to visit Masjidul Haraam (Makkah) in the same year. The Holy Prophet (saw) said that memorization of this surah carries great reward.If this surah is recited with the intention of staying awake, then the reciter will not fall asleep and if it is recited before travelling then the journey will become easy. Drinking water in which this surah has been dissolved cures stomach problems.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) that frequent recitation of this surah is a protection from Jinn and the reciter will be in the company of the Holy Prophet (saw) on the Day of Resurrection. This surah also protects one from the evil actions of an unjust person. Prisoners secure early release by reciting this surah and those who recite it properly will never face poverty or starvation. Keeping this surah in one’s possession ensures safety from the Jinn, victory in debate or confrontation, and safety of possession and wealth. Debts are also easily paid back.
