A senior Iranian diplomat says the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is ready to hold elections next summer as planned.
Deputy Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian says Damascus is keen on holding the elections through internal and local verification mechanisms. He says the vote will go ahead if all conflicting sides show their will to ensure security. Abdollahian stressed that the polls won\'t be held in calm, unless the borders are controlled and the flow of arms into the country is stopped. The deputy Iranian foreign minister in Arab and African Affairs also urged the foreign countries involved in the Syria war to allow Syrians to decide their destiny through the ballot box.

Court shown fatal US police beating video - 10May12 - All Languages
Two US police officers have been ordered to stand trial in the death of a mentally ill homeless man following a violent arrest last summer....
Two US police officers have been ordered to stand trial in the death of a mentally ill homeless man following a violent arrest last summer.
California's Orange County Superior Court Judge Walter Schwarm made the ruling after a hearing that included surveillance video of the confrontation between the officers and 37-year-old Kelly Thomas in the city of Fullerton.
Officer Manuel Ramos is charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Jay Cicinelli is charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault or battery by a public officer. Both have pleaded not guilty.
The officers confronted Thomas while responding to reports that a homeless man was looking into parked cars at a transit center.
"This is another victory, on another battle," said Thomas' father, Ron. "We're going to start a new one with the trial."
John Barnett, Ramos' attorney, said he would seek another court's review of Schwarm's ruling and did not expect his client would end up facing a jury trial.
"We're disappointed that they were held to answer but we will seek review in an appropriate manner," he told reporters after the ruling. "He believes, and he is innocent."
Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said during the hearing that Ramos bullied a shirtless Thomas with his menacing remarks and aggressive stance — actions that would have led anyone to fear they were about to get beaten by police.
"Any person, any creature on this earth would have fear at that point," Rackauckas told the court during the preliminary hearing.
"You're going to fight or flee because this is an imminent threat of a serious beating by a police officer who is there with a baton and a gun and other police officers.... This is going to be a very bad deal," the prosecutor said.
Defence attorneys countered that police — who are authorised and trained to use force when necessary — viewed the incident as an encounter with a man who refused to give his name and continued to resist arrest even as multiple officers rushed to assist.
The three-day hearing was marked by repeated showing of clips from surveillance video and audio recordings of the confrontation. The footage includes scenes of officers pummelling and pinning down Thomas as he screams that he can't breathe and moans for his father until he goes silent and is taken away by medics, leaving behind a pool of blood.
Barnett, Ramos' attorney, said during the hearing that the video — which was introduced by the prosecution — shows that his client made a conditional threat during his conversation with Thomas, stating he wanted the man to start listening and following police orders, such as sitting with his legs stretched out and providing his name to officers.
"All that Kelly Thomas had to do was simply comply," Barnett said. "Officer Ramos just lifts him up, he's going to arrest him. ... Not only can he do it, he must do it. He is bound to do it."
"Officer Ramos didn't do anything that should or could kill Kelly Thomas," Barnett said, pointing out that his client is often seen on the video at the man's feet.
Prosecutors have argued that Ramos punched Thomas in the ribs, tackled him and lay on him to hold him down while Cicinelli — who arrived later on the scene — used a Taser four times on Thomas as he hollered in pain and hit him in the face eight times with the Taser.
Thomas lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital. He was taken off life support and died five days later.
The coroner's office found that Thomas died from compression of his chest that made it difficult for him to breathe and deprived his brain of oxygen, and facial injuries stemming from his confrontation with law enforcement.
In court, Schwartz, Cicinelli's attorney, challenged those findings, noting that testimony by a paramedic who treated Thomas at the scene indicates that Thomas was breathing, although with difficulty, during the confrontation.
Schwartz also defended his client's use of the Taser on Thomas, who was still struggling and resisting officers' efforts to handcuff him, and said Cicinelli only swung the Taser at Thomas' hand when the man made an effort to grab the weapon.
"To call that a crime is to effectively handcuff our police officers out in the field from dealing with any combative suspect," Schwartz said.
The hearing in a Santa Ana courtroom was marked by lengthy testimony from medical experts and graphic photos of Thomas' injuries, including multiple bruises and a bloodied eye, while he was lying on the autopsy table.
Attorneys repeatedly played portions of the grainy surveillance video, which was paired with audio from digital recorders worn by some of the officers who were present and which brought some of Thomas' supporters to tears and prompted them to leave the courtroom.
The incident last July prompted an ongoing FBI investigation to determine if Thomas' civil rights were violated, an internal probe by the city, protests by residents and an effort to recall three Fullerton councilmembers that is slated for next month's ballot.
The recall was sparked after angry residents chastised the council members for failing to take significant action regarding the incident.

Parliament has returned from its summer recess and British politics is back on the agenda. The ability to influence another individual is a much sought-after skill. But the ability to influence an entire nation\'s politics can only be imagined.
Maybe we Muslims set our aims too high. Even small changes can greatly benefit the lives of Muslims living in the West.
But how can we Islamically engage in western politics when it takes away people\'s rights, takes their money and harms people in other countries? How can we influence non-Islamic governments?
Well, maybe we can learn from Prophet Yusuf (PBUH) and his influence in Egyptian politics. After all, we Muslims are supposed to imitate the examples in the Qur\'an. Allah in the Qur\'an, when beginning the story of Prophet Yusuf (PBUH) in Surah Yusuf, says: \"We relate to you the best of stories...\"
This week\'s Islam and Life asks: Can Muslims ever influence British politics?

August 21, 2008 presentation by Stacey Bent for the Stanford University Office of Science Outreach's Summer Science Lecture Series.
Meeting the world's growing energy needs in a sustainable fashion is one of the most pressing problems of our time. Professor Bent introduces the scope of the energy problem and some of the options for sustainable energy, then will focus on two main devices: solar cells and fuel cells. Solar cells convert the energy of the sun directly into electricity, while fuel cells convert chemical energy directly into electricity. Current research at Stanford is studying the use of new materials to develop the next generation of solar cells and fuel cells.
The Stanford Summer Science Lecture Series is a set of informal lectures about cutting edge research from four of Stanford's most esteemed professors.

Animated comical series discussing the application of Islamic concepts in modern society.
We see around us a society which has made the dunia its ‘qibla’. Both work and education aim to make progress on a worldly level, rather than for what’s worth much, much more.
“And the life of this world is nothing but a sport and a play; and as for the next abode, that most surely is the life” -The Holy Qur’an 29:64
Have we become so busy living the 9-5 lifestyle that we are afraid of breaking out of the box of mundane life? Why are we afraid to step out and explore new realms? Is the life of this world truly worth living in a cage for?
This world with all its murkiness has entangled many of us in its unfruitful production line. The dunia, like the sea only makes us thirstier the more we drink and yet people have become so obsessed with gaining more and more on a material level, they have forgotten to look at the hereafter.
It\\\\\\\'s like the famous children\\\\\\\'s story from Aesop\\\\\\\'s fables: In a field one summer\\\\\\\'s day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart\\\\\\\'s content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.
\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\"Why not come and chat with me,\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\" said the Grasshopper, \\\\\\\"\\\\\\\"instead of toiling and moiling in that way?”
\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\"I am helping to lay up food for the winter,\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\" said the Ant, \\\\\\\"\\\\\\\"and recommend you to do the same.\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\"
\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\"Why bother about winter?\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\" said the Grasshopper; \\\\\\\"\\\\\\\"We have got plenty of food at present.\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\" But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.
When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger - while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for days of need.
In this episode, we discuss how a Muslim must be just like the ant: working hard and preparing for what comes next, regardless of what the grasshoppers of our society might think.
Have a topic in mind? Then drop us a message at fb.com/IslamicPulse to request your very own episode of Biskit and our team will try and get you your very own Biskit.

Zeina Zaatari starts with sharing some quotes from her interviews in Lebanon in 2001. She then presents a history of Lebanese-Israeli relationship. Argues that Hezbollah - although supported by Iran-Syria - is very much a Lebanese phenomenon. Talks about Syed Musa Sadrs involvement - formation of Amal - Syed Fadlallahs role in educational activities and his perceived connections to Hezbollah - and finally she comes to the formation of Hezbollah. Her description of Vilayate Faqih may not be fully accurate but that shouldnt distract one from the main theme of her talk. She describes Hezbollahs organizational capacity social welfare projects outreach avenues - all of which were targets of Israels bombardment in Summer 2006. She also describes the dynamics of Hezbollahs influence among its following. Although she warns against seeing these dynamics in instrumental terms - she still focuses on clientalism and does not give sufficient value to identity attachments and religious commitments of the followers among the Shias and support from well-wishers among the general Lebanese population and beyond Lebanon. This clip is from a Berkeley teach-in organized in Sep 2006. Checkout more clips from this event on this site.

Al Nakba - The Palestinian Catastrophe 1948 - English Arabic

The Palestinian Exile - also known as Al Nakba - Arabic for - The Catastrophe- -refers to the ethnic cleansing of native Palestinian peoples all during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. From December 1947 until November 1948 Zionist forces - namely the Irgun - Lehi - Haganah terrorist gangs - expelled approximately 750 000 indigenous Palestinians --almost two third of the population--from their homes. Hundreds of Palestinians were also murdered for refusing to leave their homes. The most notable massacre is the Deir Yassin Massacre in which an estimated 120 Palestinian civilians were brutally murdered by an Irgun-Lehi force. Other massacres include the ones at Sahila - 70-80 killed - Lod - 250 killed- and Abu Shusha - 70 killed -. About 40 other massacres were carried out by Zionist forces in just the summer of 1948. Not only did Zionist forces conduct massacres of Palestinian civilians - rape occured as well. According to Israeli historian Benny Morris - In Acre four soldiers raped a girl and murdered her and her father. In Jaffa soldiers of the Kiryati Brigade raped one girl and tried to rape several more. At Hunin which is in the Galilee two girls were raped and then murdered. There were one or two cases of rape at Tantura south of Haifa. There was one case of rape at Qula in the center of the country. At the village of Abu Shusha near Kibbutz Gezer - in the Ramle area - there were four female prisoners - one of whom was raped a number of times. And there were other cases. Usually more than one soldier was involved. Usually there were one or two Palestinian girls. In a large proportion of the cases the event ended with murder. Because neither the victims nor the rapists liked to report these events- we have to assume that the dozen cases of rape that were reported- which I found are not the whole story. They are just the tip of the iceberg.- during Al Nakba - Palestinians were murdered raped and ethnically cleansed from their villages. According to Israeli historian Ilan Pappe - In a matter of seven months 531 villages were destroyed and 11 urban neighborhoods emptied.- Palestinians were forced into were forced out of Palestine and into neighboring countries - i.e. Lebanon Syria and Jordan - where they lived in refugee camps. Many were also sent to camps in West Bank and Gaza Strip. Most Palestinian towns were demolished and taken by the newly established Israeli government to make room for new Jewish immigrants. Old Palestinian infrastructures as well as many ruins dating back from the Canaanites Romans Greeks Crusaders Arabs and Ottoman Turks were completely destroyed. This signified the end of historical Palestine and the birth of modern-day Israel. Al Nakba marked the beginning of the Palestinian refugee crisis. Al Nakba destroyed a thriving and diverse Palestinian society and scattered them into diaspora. According to the UNRWA - the number of registered Palestinian refugees today is approximately 4.5 million. These refugees are dispersed throughout the world - many of which are still living in poverty-stricken refugee camps. Today the situation keeps worsening and thousands die from malnutrition - contaminated water - or scarce medical supply. Israel has since refused to allow Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and has refused to pay them compensation as required by UN Resolution 194 which was passed on December 11 1948. Historically the Israeli government Israeli schools and Israeli historians have denied that Al Nakba has occured. However The New Historians - a loosely-defined group of Israeli historians - have recently published information recognizing the Al Nakba tragedy and controversial views of matters concerning Israel - particularly events concerning its birth in 1948. Much of their material comes from recently declassified Israeli government papers. Leading scholars in this school include Benny Morris - Ilan Pappe - Avi Shlaim - and Tom Segev. Many of their conclusions have been attacked by other scholars and Israeli historians - who continue deny Al Nakba even occured.
