Palestinians have staged a protest in the occupied West Bank to denounce Israel\'s settlement construction on their land. The demonstrators marched into the Maale Adumim settlement which is considered one of the largest Israeli settlements. Israeli forces were deployed to break up the protest. Press TV has learned that the troops used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the protesters. A number of demonstrators were arrested. settlement is pressing ahead with its settlement construction plans despite global condemnation.

Israeli PM rebuffs settlement freeze Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again rejected calls to extend a partial freeze on settlement activities in the occupied territories. "The prime minister has not changed his position on this issue, there is no question of extending the moratorium," an unnamed Israeli official told AFP on Friday. Last week, US President Barack Obama said it would make sense for Tel Aviv to extend the 10-month moratorium during its direct talks with the Palestinian Authority. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged Tel Aviv on Thursday to extend the deadline, which expires at the end of this month. "Where we sit now it would be useful for some extension, it would be extremely useful," Clinton said. Meanwhile, the European Union said that the settlements are "illegal under international law" and called for an "extension of the moratorium decided by Israel." Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to leave the negotiations if Israel resumes its settlement activities in the occupied West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem). Israel's FM rejects freeze extension Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has rejected international calls for extending Tel Aviv's partial settlement freeze in the occupied Palestinian territories. The Israeli official told his British counterpart William Hague on Saturday that Israel would not extend the moratorium in the West Bank. "Israel has made numerous gestures over the past year, and now it's the Palestinians' turn. Israel will gladly continue negotiating without preconditions, including those related to the moratorium," Lieberman said. His remarks came after the United Nations, the European Union, and the United States have all called on Israel to extend the freeze to help the continuation of talks between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian Authority (PA). Last November, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a 10-month freeze on illegal settlement expansion projects, which will expire late September. Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas has warned that he would leave the negotiations if Israel continues its settlement activities in the occupied territories. The Israeli foreign minister claimed that the freeze was merely an "excuse" for the PA to thwart the talks. "Those who look for excuses will find them even if the freeze is extended," Lieberman went on to say. Israel has approved 69 new settlements in East Jerusalem al Quds. The new plan seeks to expand the Har Homar Israeli settlement. Israel has made an announcement that they produce tenders for a further 2000 new illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem al Quds. Israeli prime minister made the announcement just one week before the Israelis are set to release 24 Palestinian prisoners who have been held in Israeli jails since before the Oslo agreement in 1993. Members of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation slammed the Israeli authorities for defying calls from both the EU and the US to halt settlement expansion and further stated that this move could seriously jeopardize the US brokered Palestinian Israeli negotiations.
