In order for us to properly confront and oppose injustice, we must understand the three types of injustice. The Arabic word “Dhulm” is sometimes translated as “injustice” and sometimes as “oppression”; though both of these translations do not possess the ability to adequately describe what Dhulm really is. In order to truly light up the darkness, we must recognise and eradicate Dhulm at 3 levels.

While it may seem at times as though we have it really hard, we have to remember that the Holy Prophet (S) and the first of those who accepted him as the Messenger had it far, far harder than we do today. They suffered hunger, thirst, poverty and ridicule but it was their fortitude, trust in Allah and their faith which helped to safeguard the message of Islam, which has reached us today due to their blessings. Each fish swims upstream in the river in which it was hatched to reproduce in the same place from which it originated. When they are guided to the right place, the salmon start to dig holes for eggs. The females lay eggs, and the males cover them with their sperm to fertilize them. The females are then motivated by instinct to cover the eggs with an appropriate layer of soil from the riverbed. They stay behind the eggs until they incubate and the young red salmon come out of their holes and shake off their dust. Both parents cast a final look on the young and realize that they have successfully concluded their mission. Then they pass away in a state of fasting in the same location, leaving behind a new generation of the young. When those young grow up and become sexually mature, they will start their fasting and then pass away in a state of fasting in their own and their ancestors' birthplace. Juz 9 of the Qur\'an contains the last 118 verses of Surat al-A’raaf and the first 40 verses of Surat al-Anfal. One of the main themes of Surat al-A’raaf is discussions around resurrection and the descriptions of heaven and hell and somewhere in-between (the A’raaf). Beginning in verse 175, the story of a man from the Bani Isra’il named Balam bin Ba’ura is discussed. He had been bestowed with spiritual signs and stations in which the truth had been unveiled to him. He could have soared higher if it wasn’t for his materialistic desires for the worldly which he pursued and thus led himself away from God. It is important for us to take a lesson from this story: We may see God’s signs and recognise the Truth but choose to disregard them and follow our whims. Those who have the means to ascend to perfection yet do not utilise their intellect to find their purpose, resemble animals, particularly a cattle, as mentioned in this verse, as their goal is to only feed themselves. They thus lose focus and are those who are afflicted with heedlessness.
