Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, a founding figure and one-time spiritual leader of Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia political party, has passed away at 75 in a hospital in Beirut, Lebanon. Fadlallah was admitted to the hospital last month suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure. Thousands across the world are mourning the death of one of Shia Islam's most influential scholars.

Egypt detains 154 opposition members The Egyptian government has detained 154 members of the country's largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, ahead of general elections. According to the Muslim Brotherhood, the arrests were made in 17 different governorates just days after the group said it would field independent candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Egyptian security forces, however, say they detained the opposition members over alleged plans to cause disturbance. The group's lawyer Abdul Monem Abdul Maqsoud told reporters in Cairo on Sunday that 70 detainees remain in custody but the others were released after questioning, DPA reported. Abdul Maqsoud said the arrests were aimed at spreading fear among opposition supporters to keep people from joining the election campaign. Meanwhile, prominent Egyptian opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei earlier called for a boycott of the elections. The Muslim Brotherhood has defended its decision to field candidates. "We participate for Egypt's sake," Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Essam el-Erian said last week. "Participation is the best way to expose the corruption of the regime." Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri plans to visit Iran in November in an effort to expand ties with the Islamic Republic, a newspaper close to his political alliance has reported. Hariri announced his plans to visit Iran in a recent meeting of his Future Movement political party, major Lebanese daily An-Nahar reported, quoted by IRNA on Sunday. The Lebanese daily, affiliated with the March 14 Alliance which is close to the Lebanese premier, said Hariri's visit will likely take place in late November. Another influential Lebanese daily As-Safir also confirmed the reported planned visit and siad that Hariri's trip to Iran will likely take place on November 28 and 29. An IRNA report from Beirut, however, quotes an informed source in Hariri's office as describing the reports as "media speculations." While not denying the planned visit, the source stated that the "official date" of the visit has not been announced "though it will not take long for it to be set." The Lebanese prime minister is due to visit Russia on Monday and then travel to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for an official visit. According to the IRNA report, Abu-Dhabi will be Hariri's next destination before his visit to Iran. Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad led a high-level delegation in a landmark visit to Lebanon last October in which he emphasized Iran's determination to expand ties with the country in all fields.

Thousands of Turkish Shia braved freezing temperatures to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein on the day of Ashura. They walked through Istanbul streets beating their chests as is the religious ritual to feel the suffering of Imam Hussein at Karbala. The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the commemorations this year, a first since his party came to power in 2002. Erdogan's message was one of unity between Shia and Sunni Muslims, he himself a follower of the Sunni hanife faith.
