U-S national security adviser Susan Rice is in Afghanistan to meet with President Hamid Karzai. The visit comes a day after the US-Afghan security pact was thrown into limbo after Karzai refused to sign it.
Karzai has told the assembly of tribal elders, known as the Loya Jirga, that the deal should not be signed until after presidential elections in April. The grand assembly had approved the bilateral agreement to keep US forces in the country after 2014. The US says a deal has to be agreed by the end of the year. But Karzai says Washington has to prove its good intentions by keeping its soldiers out of Afghan homes and promoting peace talks with the Taliban.

[30 July 2012] Syrian opposition meet in Qatar - English
Syrian opposition has met in Doha to discuss formation of a transitional government predicated on the overthrow of the Assad regime. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on July 28, "Our Western partners... together with some of Syria's neighbors are essentially encouraging, supporting and directing an armed struggle against [the Syrian government]."
On Wednesday, the first diplomatic blunder occurred in the London Olympics games when the South Korean flag rather than the North Korean flag was shown before women's football match. Meanwhile, the UK economy is in worsening recession. The economy is now smaller than it was when the Tory-Lib Dem coalition came into power in 2010. The Bank of England is going to print more notes probably up to 500 billion pounds more in an effort to stimulate growth.

The US government is under renewed pressure from pro-Israel lobbyists over talks with Iran. Pro-Israel advocates have met with senior White House officials to seek explanations about recent negotiations with Iran. They\'re worried about the possible easing of draconian sanctions on Iran while they seek a military option down the road. White House officials say they\'ve told the lobbyists the U-S wants to resolve the nuclear issue through diplomacy. The Obama administration also wants Congress to stop introducing new sanctions on Iran in order to give talks a chance. Pro-Israel lobbyists namely AIPAC are pressuring the government to retain harsh sanctions. Some US politicians suspect lobbyists of trying to push anti-Iran measures to a tipping point that could lead to a conflict.
