Why is it so hard to rise above their selfish needs and desires? Many people that do understand the consequences of consumerism do not always do anything substantial to resist it because often they themselves are deep into materialism in one way or another. Some of these people may hate Bill Gates and Donald Trump but at the same time they want to become rich and famous like these two. That is true for people in the West and the East. Materialism that was a result of a specific historical experience of the so called Modernity is the West is pretty much a global phenomenon today. Thanks to corporatization in the name of globalization! Consumerism is but one facet of the larger phenomenon of materialism. Simple quantitative changes in our lifestyle would not do much. This is a very insightful and interesting lecture. Worth a consideration even if you do not agree with all what he says. --- By encouraging LOCAL CONSUMPTION I think he means developing a locally sustainable economy with a savings culture and responsible consumption.--- The point about the connection between family and consumerism may have been loosely argued in the lecture but it is not totally baseless. If considered in the broader context of the rise of individualism and materialism in America it makes sense. Individualism seeks identity. Materialism suggests finding that in competitive consumption of material goods. But it does hint toward renaissance and the transformation in cultural outlook. Would be interested to see how material and cultural are combined in the narrative of this book and movie.

And this year, once again, millions of people will gather around the pivot of Imam Husayn (A) on the Day of Arbaeen, commemorating the 40th day after his martyrdom. Yet, what are some inherent attributes of the western systems prevalent across the world in the present-day? Is there truly objectivity in journalism in the western world, especially when we see that for many years there was a media blackout as regards to the Arbaeen procession? How does the Arbaeen procession break the preconceived imposed notions of individualism and materialism? And are the so-called virtues promoted by western civilization based upon a moral and ethical duty or a mere self-centric personal gain? 2. How the corporation came to be. Originally corporations were set up to serve the public good. Corporation lawyers gained rights through the US Supreme Court using the 14th Amendment - set up to protect slaves - that gives them the rights of a person. In the last century the corporation is given more and more rights while people are increasingly stripped of theirs.

4. What is an externality. Milton Friedman describes it as the effect of a transaction between two parties on a third party who is not involved in the transaction. A technical sounding term that basically means let somebody else deal with the problems the corporation creates.

6. If we look at the corporation as a legal person it exhibits all the characteristics of a psychopath using a personality diagnostic checklist by the World Health Organization.
