A group of lawmakers in the US have introduced legislation that would finally bring to an end Washington\'s authorization to wage war in Iraq. The introduced bill has been led by Republican Senator Rand Paul. He says that US President Obama declared the war in Iraq over two years ago. Yet, it\'s necessary to bring the war to an official and legal end. Although Barack Obama has declared the war over, a loophole in the law green-lighting the March 2003 invasion allows for future U-S presidents to send troops back to Iraq. In 2003, the US attacked Iraq under the pretext that the regime of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. WMDs were never found in the country and the war killed hundreds of thousands of people.

French lawmakers approve burqa ban French lawmakers have ratified a legislation to prohibit women from wearing face-covering veils despite right activist saying such a law violates personal and religious freedoms. The Senate voted 246 to 1 in favor of the bill, which has already cleared the lower chamber, the National Assembly, reported AFP. The law will come into effect if the Constitutional Council does not question its legality. Muslims argue that the legislation is going to discriminates against France's Muslim population, which is already facing rising level of Islamophobia. Once in place, the law will allow authorities to arrest and fine those women who defy the ban. A woman who continues wearing veils will receive a fine of EUR 150 (USD 195) or a course of citizenship lessons. A man who forces a woman to go veiled will be fined EUR 30,000 and imprisonment. France is home to the largest Muslim population among the 27 European Union member states. Nearly 10 percent of the 62 million people living in French is Muslim. In June, members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) unanimously voted against any general ban against burqa or niqab in Europe, saying Muslim women should be free to choose their clothing. A group of defiant US lawmakers will introduce a bill to impose more sanctions on Iran despite Washington\'s efforts to hold off new measures. Senate aides say a vote on the bipartisan plan is expected in January. The bill aims to target Iran\'s remaining oil exports and foreign exchange. The administration of President Barack Obama has been calling on lawmakers to delay any more sanctions as a diplomatic path with Tehran is pursued. Iran and the P5+1 group reached a nuclear deal in Geneva last month. Tehran agreed to limit its nuclear energy program in exchange for some sanctions relief. The sides have agreed to work to reach a comprehensive deal in six months. Tehran has warned that new US sanctions will kill the Geneva deal.

As dialog continues between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, a group of US senators is threatening to push for more anti-Iran sanctions. Fourteen Democratic and Republican lawmakers have pledged to work together on legislation aimed at imposing new sanctions on Iran over the coming weeks. The bipartisan group of lawmakers includes Democrats Robert Menendez and Republican Bob Corker. The lawmakers say they want to prevent Iran from acquiring the capability to develop a nuclear weapon. The US has passed several rounds of illegal sanctions against the country, hitting the Iranian public hard. Tehran says its nuclear energy program is for power generation and producing medical radio isotopes.

In Iraq, 44 members of parliament announce their resignation after security forces dismantle an anti-government protest camp. The lawmakers are demanding the withdrawal of the army. Earlier in the day, clashes broke out between gunmen and police in the central city of Ramadi where the camp was located. Three policemen and ten gunmen were killed. The violence also spread to the nearby city of Fallujah. The lawmakers are also calling for the release of detained MP Ahmed al-Alwani who backs the anti-government protesters. On Saturday, security forces raided Alwani\\\'s home. Deadly clashes broke out after his guards opened fire on the police. Seven people -- including the MP\\\'s brother, five guards and a security force member - were killed before Alwani was taken into custody.
