Saudi Arabia says it plans to make a major shift in its dealings with the United States. The Saudi intelligence chief says Riyadh\'s ties with Washington have been deteriorating for a while over several issues. A source close to Bandar bin Sultan says Riyadh\'s new stance is in protest at Washington\'s inaction over the war in Syria and the issue of Palestine. He\'s also voiced concern about the U-S growing closer to Iran. Bandar bin Sultan also criticized Washington for failing to back his country when it deployed forces to crush the popular uprising in Bahrain. The source close to the Saudi prince has hinted that the planned change in policy would have wide-ranging consequences, including for arms purchases and oil sales.

Myanmar rejects a UN resolution that urges it to give the Rohingya Muslims equal access to citizenship. Myanmar also accused the UN of violating its sovereignty. On Tuesday, the UN General Assembly\'s human rights committee called on Myanmar to stop Buddhist violence against the Muslim minority. But the demand drew strong opposition from the West\'s democracy icon Aung San Suu Chee \'s party. Buddhist violence against Rohingya Muslims, which is said to have the state backing, has become routine in Myanmar. It\'s left hundreds dead and sent another 2-hundred 40-thousand fleeing their homes.

It\'s the third day of nuclear negotiations in Geneva. Iran and the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany have wrapped up the first round of talks over Tehran\'s nuclear energy program. The negotiations are now adjourned for further internal consultations. Iran\'s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif heads the Iranian team and EU\'s Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton represents the P-five-plus-one group of countries. They\'re trying to hammer out a draft agreement to resolve the decade-old standoff over Tehran\'s nuclear program. Iran\'s right to uranium enrichment remains one of the major sticking points in the talks. Tehran has already made it clear that any agreement which does not include the issue of enrichment is not acceptable. The previous round of talks failed to reach an agreement after France, under the influence of Israel, blocked a proposed deal.

It was an ill-fated day 50 years ago when an assassin shot former President John F. Kennedy. The president was traveling in a motorcade with his wife Caroline in Dallas, Texas in 1963. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Lee Harvey Oswald was accused of the crime and he was later shot and killed by Jack Ruby. Oswald never stood trial. Since that time, speculation has swirled around why Kennedy was targeted. It still haunts journalists who reported from the tragedy. Kennedy was the 35th US president. He was assassinated almost three years into his term. For many, he\'s left behind an unfulfilled promise. But Kennedy did leave behind a legacy of tradition that is being remembered for generations. This week, President Obama remembered his predecessors memory at Arlington National cemetery. He laid a wreath at the grave site with former President Bill Clinton and relatives of the slain president. Mr. Obama was accompanied by Ethel Kennedy, the wife of Robert Kennedy. Earlier in the day, the current president carried on the tradition of presenting a medal of freedom. A tradition started by Kennedy that he never lived to see. President Kennedy\'s legacy lives on despite the tragedy that cut his life at 46 years old. There are many who have theorized that his assassination was part of a conspiracy plot. But the real truth surrounding the former president\'s death may never really be known.

The death toll in Latvia\'s worst disaster in decades is rising. It has been announced that at least 51 people died when the roof of a supermarket collapsed on shoppers in the capital, Riga. Rescuers are still pulling bodies from the rubble as hopes of finding more survivors are dwindling over 24 hours since the incident occurred. The roof of the Maxima supermarket collapsed late on Thursday when it was full of shoppers. The cause of the deadly tragedy has not been determined yet, although the police have opened a criminal investigation focusing on the construction of the building. The Latvian government has declared three days of mourning starting on Saturday and will hold a national moment of silence on Monday.

An Iraqi group says it will launch attacks inside Saudi Arabia if Riyadh continues to promote sectarian violence in the region. The group, which calls itself the Mukhtar Army, has also claimed responsibility for a mortar attack which targeted an uninhabited area of Saudi Arabia on Thursday. It says the attack was carried out in retaliation for decrees issued in Saudi Arabia that insult Shias and encourage people to kill them. Saudi Arabia has been one of the vocal supporters of Takfiri insurgents fighting against the Syrian government. Riyadh also stands accused of promoting sectarian violence in Iraq.

-- Update: Angola govt. denies it banned Islam, destroyed mosques (01:40 GMT) Angola has banned Islam, claiming that it clashes with its customs and state religion. The Angolan government says Islam is not a religion but a sect, and as part of the ban, all mosques will be destroyed in the Christian-majority country. According to the Islamic Community of Angola, there are more than eighty mosques and about half a million Muslims in the country, and the number is growing. Angola\'s culture ministry says the houses of worship of other faiths which have not been legalized will also be demolished. Angola is the first country in the world to ban Islam.

The European Union says it\'s ready to suspend some sanctions against Iran as soon as experts check that Tehran is implementing the terms of the Geneva deal. The bloc says it backs the deal as a sign of the commitment of all sides to build trust over Iran\'s nuclear activities. A statement from EU foreign ministers says a swift implementation of the voluntary measures by all sides is now key. The statement also adds that Iran has to implement its commitments in good faith and the EU is committed to suspending sanctions as set out in the deal. The bloc says sanctions will be suspended after inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency verify the implementation of nuclear-related measures by Iran.

A US appeals court has put Saudi Arabia back as a defendant in lawsuits, saying it had given support to al-Qaeda prior to the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001. The federal appeals court in New York City has revived claims by families of victims of the attacks. Another court had previously ruled that Saudi Arabia was protected by a legal privilege which says foreign countries can\'t be sued in American courts. The US says nearly three thousand people were killed in the attacks. It says most of the attackers were Saudi nationals who hijacked planes and flew them into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington.

Its the second day of a new round of technical talks between Iran and the permanent members of the U-N Security Council plus Germany in the Swiss city of Geneva. Experts from the two sides began negotiations over Iran\\\\\\\'s nuclear program on Thursday. The talks follow four days of similar discussions in Vienna last week. Iran walked out of the last round after the U-S expanded its sanctions against Tehran. The added measures came as, under a landmark deal in Geneva last month, the West had promised not to slap new sanctions on Iran. Tehran says it\\\\\\\'s ready to pick up the talks after the E-U foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton assured it that the P-five-plus-one countries, especially the U-S, would continue the negotiations in goodwill.

Iran says it\\\'s NOT ready to give up research on centrifuges as part of a final deal with the six countries involved. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said that Iran is going to discuss various aspects of its nuclear program in the upcoming negotiations. However, he added that technology and science have nothing to do with the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Iran is set to resume talks with the five members of the UN Security Council plus Germany in Vienna on February 18. Diplomats say the development of a new advanced centrifuge is going to be at the heart of the talks. Under an interim deal reached in November, Tehran can engage in research and development of centrifuges.

Iran\'s foreign minister says the US had an illusion that it could totally dismantle Tehran\'s nuclear facilities and this illusion had thwarted any possible deal. Zarif says there\'s still deep mistrust between the two sides and both need to work to build trust. At a meeting with the presence of the IAEA chief, Zarif also noted that it would be a big mistake to assume Iran has participated in talks because of sanctions. He says when sanctions were first imposed only 200 centrifuges were working, but now Tehran has 19-thousand centrifuges. Zarif says nuclear technology is now localized in Iran, and Tehran does not need the help of other countries. For his part, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Yukia Amano said Tehran is meeting its commitments within the framework of the Geneva agreement.

Syria says it\'s committed to destroying its chemical weapons despite difficulties caused by the ongoing fighting with foreign-backed militants. Deputy foreign minister, Faisal Meqdad says the difficulties may at times prevent Damascus from implementing some of its commitments. However, he says the government will fully turn over its chemical weapons by June, as required by the deal brokered by the US and Russia last year. Damascus has already met several deadlines in the process of destroying its chemical weapons so far. But, it has reportedly delayed the work twice. The US and Britain have criticized Syria for that, with Washington accusing Damascus of having a slow pace in moving the weapons abroad. Syria has rejected such claims and blamed the U-S for the delays because of its support for militants.
