NATO played a major role in attacking and destroying Libya\'s infrastructure, not to mention its defense capabilities. And now the Western military alliance says it is sending a team of experts to help Libya build its military institutions.
The team will be operated from Brussels, and is tasked to advise the Libyan government in building the country\'s defense institutions. The announcement comes days after the brief abduction of Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan, and two years after NATO created a no-fly zone in Libya which led to the killing and overthrow of former leader Muammar Gaddafi. NATO\'s attack on Libya also left thousands of people dead and many others displaced. The country is still reeling from the insecurity following the months-long war in 20-11.

Dealing in cash only is the traditional method used by tax dodgers to avoid paying the state a portion of their incomes. Now, though the digital era has taken centre stage and money can be shifted electronically right around the globe using any number of accounts. The European Commission says forcing institutions to become more transparent is the key to curtailing the problem. The Commission says it is vital that governments around the world co-operate with the EU on this issue. We asked ordinary EU citizens about their views on these latest measures which are designed to curtail illegal tax evasion within the union estimated to be worth one trillion euro annually.

The American Studies Association has endorsed a boycott of Israeli academic institutions over violation of international law and UN resolutions.
In an election that attracted more than 12-hundred voters, 66 percent said yes to the boycott. The resolution is in solidarity with Palestinian scholars and students deprived of their academic freedom. The ASA cites the documented impact of the Israeli occupation on Palestinian scholars and students for the boycott. The organization also says Israeli institutions of higher education are a party to Tel Aviv\'s policies that violate human rights in occupied Palestinian lands.

[13 July 2012] Is Islamic banking applicable in today economy - English
After the baking crisis of 2008 and the collapse of financial markets, doubts have emerged on the capability of the modern financial model to sustain a healthy economy. With the failure of both capitalism and communism, some experts, especially in Muslim countries are looking at Islam to find an alternative model. Islam's strong prohibition of usury (Riba) in particular is seen as a new foundation for a healthy banking system and consequently a sustainable and fairer economy. Other Islamic institutions like zakat and waqf (endowments) have potential economical functions.
In recent years Islamic Banking for example, has been tried with some success in some of Muslim countries and even in Britain. British Financial Services Authority estimates the assets controlled by Islamic banks at the global level to be $200-500bn which is growing at a pace of 10-15% per year. With prospect of about 12 million Muslims living in EU, Islamic financial and economical model is a feasible solution for the future. This week's Islam and Life asks: Are the principles of Islamic banking applicable in today's economy?

The arrest warrant must be approved by a court first. Prosecutors say Samsung paid nearly 34-point-five million dollars to institutions backed by Park\'s former confidante, Choi Soon-sil, in exchange for the national pension fund\'s support for a 2015 merger of two Samsung affiliates. Samsung has acknowledged providing funds to the institutions, but has denied accusations of lobbying to push through the merger. President Park was impeached by the country’s parliament in December for corruption and abuse of power. She has rejected all allegations as lies and a set-up.

Ali Abunimah is the editor of http://electronicintifada.net/. He spoke at the One State for Palestine-Israel Conference in Boston in 2009. For more on the One State solution, see his book "One Country". For a similar perspective, see http://gazaawareness.blogspot.com/ BOTH morally and realistically, the two-state solution was never a viable solution of the situation. In the last 30 or so years, since Camp David, if our different institutions and movements had spent their energies on discrediting Zionism - instead of giving it concessions and in the process legitimizing it - that might have been more fruitful. Over these years, the "peace process" has only facilitated Israel to steal more land and discredit the moral rights of the Palestinians.
Today, effectively, there is already a "One State" in the Palestine-Israel region under Israeli control. Some argue that we are inevitably moving toward formalizing that "One State", and that the resistance struggle may in fact transform into a movement for equal citizenship rights. Or, perhaps it won't take even that long for the dismantlement of the Zionist apartheid state.

Contributed by Abuzari. Irena Salina's award-winning documentary investigation into what experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century - The World Water Crisis. Salina builds a case against the growing privatization of the world's dwindling fresh water supply with an unflinching focus on politics, pollution, human rights, and the emergence of a domineering world water cartel. Interviews with scientists and activists intelligently reveal the rapidly building crisis, at both the global and human scale, and the film introduces many of the governmental and corporate culprits behind the water grab, while begging the question 'CAN ANYONE REALLY OWN WATER?' Beyond identifying the problem, FLOW also gives viewers a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis and those developing new technologies, which are fast becoming blueprints for a successful global and economic turnaround.

After many arduous meetings, the Iranian Parliament has finally managed to pass the fifth development plan which some see as an achievement for Iran's monetary system. The government submitted the bill to the legislative body last year but it has only just been approved. The most controversial article in the bill was to do with Iran's Central Bank and it took a lot of wrangling to finally push the bill through.
This episode of Press TV's Iran Today is going to be talking about the history of the bill and how Iran's banking system works.

After the Egyptian revolution brought down Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule, a new day for Egypt is settling in and making way for Political change.
Though Dr. Essam al-Arian believes the army is taking steps in the right direction, he wants to see all members of the old regime out.
The Muslim Brotherhood is currently organizing a new political party and plans to participate in a pluralist government. They will not submit a candidate for president.
Dr. Essam Al-arian believes that Egypt must focus on its Domestic issues first, but would also like to see the nation's relationship with Israel change.
Ahmed Salah is an Independent Political Analyst who's building grassroots democratic institutions throughout the country. He says it is too soon to know how much support the Muslim Brotherhood truly has.
Though the Muslim Brotherhood were not behind the protests that led to the end of Hosni Mubarak's presidency, for decades they stood as the largest opposition and biggest threat to the Mubarak regime.

Renewed Karachi violence claims more lives - 29Oct2011 - English

After a brief period of relative calm in the port city of Karachi, the incidents of sectarian targeted killings once again claimed the lives of two members of the shia community including an ex-secretary of Shia ulema council, Kauser Zaidi.
Furious participants of the funeral procession, behind me, are demanding what they call their primary right of security from the state which they say has failed so far to deliver this right.
The men who unsuccessfully tried to kill Zaidi in August finally accomplished their mission on Friday at Pakistan Chowk, a place near to the financial street of Pakistan, the II Chindrigar road. The 50-year-old former secretary of the Shia Ulema Council was shot at close range as he was on his way home with his wife. She emerged unscathed. Just three hours later, another Shia man was gunned down in the city.
The city witnessed a relative peace after the apex court of the country started hearing of Karachi violence in Ramadan. Observers believe that this may start a new wave of violence in Karachi as Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar is approaching. The Shia community in Balochistan also came under intense attack recently when about 29 people were killed in two separate, targeted incidents including an attack in Mastung on pilgrims heading to Iran.
According to the Human Rights commission of Pakistan, over 1400 people were killed during the first eight months of the 2011 because of ethnic, sectarian and political violence. Experts say although the raids have been started by the law enforcement agencies against those responsible, following the Supreme court\\\'s verdict over Karachi violence, but due to the politicization of these institutions, results of these crackdowns will be limited.
