[31 July 2012] 20th Intl Holy Quran Exhibition in Tehran - English Holy Quran exhibition during time of spiritual reflection and worship. During the fasting holy month of Ramadan, when many devout Muslims try to recite the Holy Quran, the 20th International Holy Quran Exhibition has opened in Tehran.

State organizations in Saudi Arabia have desecrated the Holy Qur\'an by discarding over fifty copies in Taif city\'s street sewerage canals. According to a Saudi official in the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, the incident was reported by a local student, who saw the holy books on his way home in Al-Salama district of Taif. The service company that specializes in opening drainage inlets was then called, and dozens of copies of the Quran were retrieved. A photo that shows desecrated books has now gone viral on the internet and social media websites. This is not the first time the Holy Quran has been desecrated in Saudi Arabia. Earlier this year, the move by prison officials in Al-Haer province to insult the Holy Book led to protests in different parts of the Kingdom. The desecration of the holy Quran in a country, which is the birthplace of Islam, has raised eyebrows in the Muslim world. This week\'s Islam & Life asks: How do certain stories affect the world\'s perception of Saudi Arabia?

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) that the person who recites this surah in any of his prayers, will drink from the fountain of Kawthar. The reward for reciting this surah is compared to ten times the number of cattle slaughtered on Eid-ul-Adha every year until the Day of Resurrection. When the Holy Prophet\'s (saw) son, Tahir, born to Khadijah al Kubra, died, Amr bin As and Hakam bin Aas taunted the Holy Prophet (saw) by calling him “abtar” (tail-less), whose progeny has been cut off. This surah was revealed to give glad tidings to the Holy Prophet (saw) that abundance of unbounded grace, wisdom and knowledge, mercy and goodness, spiritual power and insight, in highest degrees, and of progeny has been given to him. It is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Musnad of Ahmad ibn Hambal and other books of renowned Sunni scholars that the Holy Prophet (saw) said: “Kawthar is a stream of super excellence, exclusively belonging to me. Only the righteous believers (among my followers) will be allowed to drink from it. Ali shall distribute the water from it to them. On the day of judgement I will see some of my companions driven, like cattle, away from Kawthar. It will be announced that they are those who, after my departure from the world, deviated from the true religion and introduced innovations (based upon conjecture) to corrupt the faith.” From that day Imam Ali (as) was known and referred to by the companions as “saqi al kawthar”. “Kawthar” also means abundance of descendants. The countless descendants of the Imams of the Ahlulbayt (as), in the progeny of Imam Ali (as) and Syeda Fatimah (sa) are known as sayyids. They are the descendants of the Holy Prophet (saw).

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. This surah refers to an incident in the history of Makka, as an example of how ALLAH (swt) deals with those who oppose HIS will. About fifty days before the birth of the Holy Prophet, Abraha, the Abyssinia\'s viceroy of Yemen, Christian by religion, proceeded against Makka, as the head of a large army, with the object of destroying the Kaabah, because he wanted that there should be no place or structure more glorious than the church he was building at Sana. He had with him elephants. Therefore he and his army is known as ashab al fil, those who brought elephants. At the outskirts of Makka he captured a large number of camels belonging to the chief of Makka, Abd al Muttalib, the grandfather of the Holy Prophet. After receiving the information that Abraha was coming to destroy the holy Ka-bah, Abd al Muttalib went to see him and said: \"I have come to collect my camels. The Ka-bah belongs to God. He will surely protect it from your evil design.\" Abraha gave the captured camels to Abd al Muttalib He returned to the city and asked the people to retire to the neighbouring hills, leaving the Lord of Ka-bah to protect it. When Abraha entered Makka, suddenly a large flock of birds, like swallows, came flying from the sea-coast and pelted the invading army with pebbles of baked clay. They all died. They were like a dead and useless field from which all the produce is eaten up and only straw with stubble is left. Abraha escaped and went directly to the king in Abyssinia. All the way a bird with a stone in her beak followed him. When the king asked Abraha as to what kind of birds they were, Abraha looked to the sky and the bird at once dropped stone in her beak and killed him on the spot.The lesson to be drawn is twofold. The pagans of Makka were forewarned that as the Holy Prophet was superior to the Kaabah, ALLAH, who protects whatever is HIS own, shall protect him from all their evil schemes. It is also a warning to men in all ages that \"if a man intoxicated with power comes out to defeat ALLAH\'s holy plan, he cannot prevail against ALLAH (swt), but his plan will fail and destroy him as well.“ It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) that whoever recites this surah in his faraa’idh prayers, the mountains will bear witness on the Day of Judgement that he prayed and he will be taken to Jannah on the command of ALLAH (swt). The person who recites this surah is kept safe from his enemies and has his difficulties and problems solved quickly. Recitation of this surah is also helpful in remaining safe from evil tyrant rulers.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. The Quraysh, among whom the Holy Prophet (s) was born, was a tribe held in great esteem, as the guardians of the holy Ka-bah, by the Arabs. They were the descendants of prophet Ibrahim (as) through his son Ismail (as). The custody of the sacred shrine of the Ka-bah enabled them to obtain covenants of security from the rulers of neighbouring countries on all sides on account of which they travelled to Syria in summer, and to Yemen in winter, to carry out their trade. Their trade caravans enriched them, united them, and drew people from distant parts to visit Makka, to bring and take from there merchandise of various kinds. This honour and advantage they owed to their position as servants of the sacred house. They owed it to Allah. It was therefore right and fitting that they should worship Allah alone and accept as true the religion of Allah, Islam, brought by the Holy Prophet. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) said that the one who recites this surah will get the reward of ten times the number of people performing Tawaaf and I’tekaaf. The recitation of surah al-Feel and al-Quraysh in the compulsory prayers carries great reward. If this surah is recited on food, its ill effects are removed. Those with heart ailments should recite this surah and then gently blow into some drinking water and drink it. If a poor person recites this surah before sunrise, ALLAH (swt) will make it easy for him to get his sustenance.

Why is the birth of the Holy Prophet (S) good news for humanity? And can the greatness of this incident be fathomed by the minds of human beings? The holy month's beginning is based on sighting of the moon which is usually confirmed by religious authorities. However in multicultural Ukraine, some Muslim communities go ahead with the date announced by their countries of origin and others follow the date of their country of residence. The holy days of Ramadan begin and end with the prayers. The evening prayer is followed by the fastbreaking iftar. In Ukraine Iftar menu is as multicultural as Ukrainian Muslims are. Fasting is intended to remind Muslims of self-discipline and self-restraint. During Ramadan, Muslims avoid from eating, drinking and smoking during the daylight. They have food twice a day, one before sun rises and the other after the sun set. Fasting in Ukraine has its own features, says this mufti. For instance the daylight length in the country may climb to 18 hours. Ukrainian Muslims also point to the high humidity of the climate which makes people feel the heat. However most Muslims in Ukraine don't see any problem in this This year Ukrainian Muslim communities invited muftis from Saudi Arabia and Egypt to perform readings during Ramadan. Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Tuesday that enemies of Iran have failed to divide Iranian authorities. Addressing a large crowd in this holy city, Ayatollah Khamenei said that riots of the last year\\\'s post presidential elections era have insured the Islamic Revolution as it added to the public insight. \\\'The presence of 40 million of Iranians in the last year\\\'s presidential elections has angered enemies of the country and defused their conspiracies,\\\' the Supreme Leader told his well-wishers. The Ayatollah arrived in Qom earlier on Tuesday amid warm and enthusiastic welcome of the local people. Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that enemies have failed to undermine people\\\'s religious sentiments through negative propaganda. \\\'Enemies are seeking an Islam without clerics and without politics as they know how clerics can play an effective role in people\\\'s daily lives and have significant effects on the society and public moves,\\\' said the Ayatollah. The Supreme Leader stressed that Iranians would continue their move towards a brighter future by making more progress and defusing enemies\\\' conspiracies. Enemies do not refer to strong points but they, instead, multiply weak points, if any, in order to disappoint the people, the young generation in particular, and try to portray a dark future for them in order to make them leave the scene\\\' of social and political life, Ayatollah Khamenei said. The Supreme Leader arrived in this holy city Tuesday morning amid the warm and enthusiastic welcome of the local people. Qom is considered as the religious capital of Iran. During the past 32 years, The Islamic Revolution has always enjoyed full support of the Iranian nation which was the key to the pepole\\\'s resistance against enemies\\\' conspiracies, the Ayatollah stressed. The Supreme Leader added, \\\'The strong presence of people is the backbone of the resistance of the Iranian authorities\\\' against pressures exerted by enemies of the Islamic Revolution. The Ayatollah added that currently, the Iranian revolution was recognized worldwide as a religious revolution \\\'since it could never survive the past crises if it lacked a religious nature.

This is a ‘meccan’ sūrah. The Holy Prophet (saw) said that reciting this sūrah carries the reward of reciting a quarter of the Holy Qur’an. The recitation of this sūrah drives away Shaitan and keeps one safe from Shirk. It is also among the five sūrahs that have been recommended to be recited during a journey, the others being sūrah an-Nasr, at-Tawhid, al-Falaq and an-Naas. Reciting sūrah al-Kafirun and at-Tawheed in compulsory prayers is a means for forgiveness of sins for the reciter, his parents and his children. If a person dies after reciting this sūrah, it is as if he has died a martyr. Recitation of this sūrah before sleeping keeps one safe the whole night.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. Asr means age which implies continuity of time. According to some commentators it is a reference to the period in which the Holy Prophet (s) was sent into this world to preach the religion of ALLAH (swt), Islam, so that mankind, in all ages, come out from the darkness of ignorance into the light of divine guidance and reach higher realms of spiritual bliss. Some say that it refers to afternoon prayers (salatul asr). Imam Jafar bin Muhammad as Sadiq (as) said: \"It refers to the age when the living Imam of the Ahl ul Bayt, Muhammad bin Hasan al Mahdi al Qa-im (ajtfs), will be commissioned by ALLAH (swt) to administer the society of all human beings under the law of ALLAH (swt) prescribed in the religion of Islam.\" Whether it refers to the time of the Holy Prophet (s) or his true successor who will act according to the teachings and laws he brought from ALLAH (swt) to guide mankind, those who follow them will achieve success in the life of hereafter, and those who reject them will be the losers. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) has said that the person who recites this surah in his recommended prayers will have a shining face on the Day of Judgement. The one who recites this surah will be patient in adversity and will be counted from among the people of truth. If this surah is written after ‘Isha prayers and kept, it will be a safety from the tyrant ruler in whose presence one is brought.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. This surah contrasts two types of people, the charitable and the miserly, and describes each of their characteristics. The holy Prophet (s) has said that the reward of reciting this surah is so much that the one who recites it will be pleased when he sees it in his Book of Deeds. His inspiration of good deeds (Tawfiq) will also increase. If recited 15 times before sleeping, one will dream about what pleases him most. Reciting it in the I’sha prayers, carries the reward of completing a quarter of the holy Qur’an and is guaranteed that the prayers are accepted.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (saw) that a person who recites this surah will never face bad times. The person who recites it in the Isha or Tahajjud prayers always remains pure of heart and even dies while he/she is in a pure state. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) said that a person who recites this surah properly will get a chance to meet the Holy Prophet (saw) and if he/she prays for a specific wish he/she will get InshALLAH. Reciting surah al-Muzammil a hundred times on Thursday night leads to the forgiving of a hundred major sins and procures a hundred rewards. Recitation of this surah protects one from insanity and from being a slave to people.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (saw) that the reward for reciting this surah is Jannah and its bounties. If a person recites this surah, especially on Thursday mornings, he/she will be rewarded with a hundred houries and four thousand slaves in Jannah and he/she will be given a place close to that of the Holy Prophet (saw). Reciting it during war brings victory. Drinking water in which this surah has been dissolved is good for those with heart ailments.

This is a ‘meccan’ sūrah. It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (saw) that the reward for reciting this sūrah is equivalent to the total number of people who keep up prayer and safeguard the property which has been entrusted to them. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) has said that the one who recites this sūrah will have his sins hidden on the Day of Judgement and he will enter Jannah alongside the Holy Prophet (saw). If a prisoner recites this sūrah, he will secure his release. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) said that if this sūrah is recited before sleeping, one keeps safe from the temptations of Shaitan (la).

This is a “meccan” surah. The Holy Prophet (saw) said that those who recite this surah will get a reward equal to the number of people who believe in Prophet Nuh (as). Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) said that those who believe in ALLAH (swt), His Prophet (saw) and recite the Holy Qur’an, should never leave out surah Nuh as they will gain a place among the favoured servants of ALLAH (swt) by reciting it. He will get three places in Jannah instead of one and he will be given 200 hur or huriyah . Any supplications made after reciting this surah are quickly answered. The one who recites this surah often will not die until he/she sees his/her place in Jannah.

This is a “meccan” surah. It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (saw) that the person who recites this surah will come out of his/her grave laughing on the Day of Resurrection. Writing this surah as a talisman on deerskin and keeping it in one’s possession makes one successful in all his/her endeavours. If it is recited during a journey, then the traveller will return home safely. Whoever recites this surah with surah at-Takwir will be under the shade of the Holy Prophet (saw) in Jannah.
