A Salafist movement confirms that at least 77 Jordanian nationals have been killed in Syria since the beginning of the unrest in the Arab country. The Jordanian Salafist Movement has said the slain militants were fighting under the banner of the al-Nusra Front. It added that there are at least 15-hundred Jordanian nationals fighting in Syria, most of them members of the al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. A very large number of the militants fighting against the Syrian government are reportedly foreign nationals. Latest reports also suggest that more than 210 extremists have traveled from Germany to Syria since the conflict started about three years ago. The Syrian government says the West and its regional allies, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants.

Three Indian peacekeepers are confirmed dead in an attack on a UN base in South Sudan. India\'s UN envoy says the peacekeepers were targeted and killed during an attack by a group of ethnic youths on the base in Jonglei state. The attack on the UN base came after troops loyal to fugitive former vice president Riek Machar seized the town of Bor late Wednesday. Hundreds of people have been killed in South Sudan since violence broke out in the country on Sunday.

The Israeli spy agency Mossad may have used intelligence provided by an Arab country to carry out assassinations in the region. Israeli sources confirmed on Monday that Mossad chief Meir Dagan's reliance on cooperation with an Arab country was the reason behind the successful completion of Israeli operations in various countries, IRNA reported. The Arab country does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, the sources added. Among the operations attributed to the Israeli regime is the assassination of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement's top commander Imad Mughniyah and Syrian army officer Brigadier-General Mohammed Suleiman. Israel is also accused of carrying out the recent bombings in Syria and Lebanon. Lebanon's Al-Manar TV station reported on Monday that Saudi Arabia was the country that provided the intelligence to Mossad, suggesting that Saudi Secretary General of the National Security Council Prince Bandar bin Sultan played a role in the cooperation between the intelligence agencies.

In a statement on Sunday, Iran called for restraint and an immediate halt of the large-scale Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Israel attacked the impoverished strip on Saturday, leaving 800 people in a critical state. The Saturday attacks are widely believed to be one of the worst in the 60-year history of the Israeli occupation. "The international community is duty bound to defend Gaza civilians in the face of Israel's genocide and crimes against humanity," the Foreign Ministry statement reads according to press tv. "Tel Aviv's bombardment of the Gaza Strip is yet another brazen example of Israel's terrorist mindset and its gross violation of human rights," it adds. The statement condemns the barrage of Israeli attacks on civilian non-military targets as being in stark defiance of the Geneva Convention and UN resolutions. Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states that no protected person may be punished for an offense he or she has not personally committed, hence collective punishment and all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited. The Saturday onslaught came after a six-month truce between Israel and the democratically-elected Palestinian government of Hamas expired on December 19 - and after repeated violations by Tel Aviv. The Arab world reacted in shock to the Israeli incursion into Gaza and stepped up calls for retaliation against Israel. "Today everybody has to stand by the side of the Palestinian people and stop this blind military action," said Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit. Russia and France have also decried the large-scale operations, demanding that Israel immediately halt its attacks on the Gaza Strip. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, however, snubbed international appeals for an end to the attacks and asserted that operations against Gaza will go on for "as long as necessary". "There is a time for cease-fires and a time to fight, and now is the time to fight," said Barak, adding that the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) and security forces have been masterminding the Gaza invasion "for months". In a televised speech on Sunday, Barak confirmed that Tel Aviv may even send ground troops into Gaza to help in carrying out fresh attacks on the coastal strip. The UN Security Council held emergency consultations Saturday night and early Sunday to outline a resolution, by which Israel would be obliged to halt its military operations "without delay".

An aide to defeated presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi says that the post-election rioters are "not supporters of, or linked to Mousavi or his camp." Mahmoud Rabi'ee, Mousavi's campaign adviser in the Golestan Province, denounced the recent unrest which led to vandalism, arson and clashes with the riot police throughout Iran. Mousavi, who according to the Interior Ministry has lost to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad even in the East-Azerbaijan province where he hails from, cried foul and described the election as a 'charade' - an allegation denied by the president and his interior minister, who was in charge of holding the election. "We are supporting Mousavi to continue the path of [the late leader of the Islamic Revolution] Imam Khomeini and those who lost their lives and made sacrifices for the Islamic Republic," Rabi'ee said on Wednesday. "We have objections to the election results, but we show our objections by the means of silence," he added. The election results, which marked a landslide victory for the incumbent president, caused mass rallies by hundreds of thousands of Mousavi's supporters. On occasions the rallies turned violent and resulted in casualties. Eight people have so far been confirmed dead in the ensuing clashes between the police and the protesters. Many others have been injured in the unrest. Rabi'ee added that a number of 'miscreants' are attempting to de-fame Mousavi and his supporters "by conducting acts of vandalism in our name." The Mousavi camp seeks to pursue its complaints regarding 'electoral irregularities' through legal means and has pleaded the authorities to provide for the peaceful proceeding of the reported 'violations'

New footage disputes account of Basij base incident Press TV has broadcast newly-obtained footage of a controversial clash between Basij members and protesters, which shows the Basij base under siege. Tehran became the scene of violence in recent weeks amidst rallies staged in protest at the outcome of the June 12 presidential election -- which saw Mahmoud Ahmadinejad re-elected to a second term in office. People described by Iranian officials as "saboteurs" infiltrated the riots and set fire to a mosque, two gas stations and a military post in western Tehran. At least 20 people were killed and many others were injured in the ensuing violence. The protests came to worldwide attention when major media outlets broadcast footage of what they described as unprovoked attacks by security forces. In Britain, Channel Four covered the news by airing a video of a clash between rioters and Basij members in which a man was seen shooting at the crowd. According to comments broadcast in a video provided by the government in Tehran, journalist Maziar Bahari had provided Channel Four with the footage of the June 15 attack. What was aired by the channel, however, had the scene of the attack on the base censored. The new footage obtained by Press TV shows a group of people attacking the Basij base with Molotov cocktails. Jundullah leader Abdulmalik Rigi received $100,000 from US operatives to fuel sectarianism in Iran in just one of their meetings, his brother has said. "My brother Abdulmalik met several times with US forces in Pakistan," Abdulhamid Rigi told a group of tribal leaders and citizens in the town of Iranshahr in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan. "I myself took part in one of those meetings, where we discussed recruitment, training, infiltrating Iran and methods of inflaming Sunni-Shia sectarianism for three hours. In that meeting, the Americans gave my brother $100,000," he added. Abdulhamid also said that during the meeting in question, his brother had asked for computer and satellite equipment, which he used to recruit young Sunni Baluchies. According to Jundullah's former number two, young men were attracted to the group because it sought to portray itself as an Islamic and Jihadist movement. He said that the group promoted the idea that killing two people from the Shia community would ensure entry to Paradise as they are infidels. Abdulhamid said that he had shot his wife dead in the Pakistani city of Quetta while she was asleep, because his brother had said she must die for being a Shia and a government spy. He added that Abdulmalik too had previously killed his own wife by slitting her throat for the same reason. Abdulhamid Rigi had earlier confirmed that the ring leader had repeatedly met with US agents in the Pakistani cities of Islamabad and Karachi since 2005. "In Pakistan, Malik [Abdulmalik Rigi] contacted an individual who resided in the US, who then put him through to the FBI," he said in a recent interview with Press TV. Jundullah (meaning 'God's Army') is a Pakistan-based terrorist group closely affiliated with the notorious al-Qaeda organization and is made up of disgruntled members of Iran's Sunni Baluch community. A 2007 Sunday Telegraph report revealed that the CIA had created Jundullah to achieve 'regime change in Iran'. The report said it was the very same US intelligence outfit that had tried to destabilize Iran by 'supplying arms-length support' and 'money and weapons' to Jundullah. Another report posted by ABC also revealed that the US officials had ordered Jundullah to 'stage deadly guerrilla raids inside the Islamic Republic, kidnap Iranian officials and execute them on camera', all as part of a 'programmatic objective to overthrow the Iranian government'. Jundullah has carried out a number of bombings and other violent attacks in Iran resulting in many casualties. Some of the attacks for which it has claimed responsibility are the killings of at least 16 Iranian police officers in a 2008 attack, nine Iranian security guards in 2005, and another 11 in a 2007 bombing. The group's leader Abdulmalik Rigi has also publicly claimed responsibility for a bombing in May at a Shia mosque in the southeastern city of Zahedan, which left 25 worshipers dead and scores injured. Soon after the attack, Abdulmalik Rigi admitted during an interview with a US-based satellite TV station that his group collaborated with another anti-Iranian terrorist group, the Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO). "They (MKO) inform us about the regime's activities in our areas of operations and let us know of the regime's forces in these districts and send us most of the intelligence of our interest by email and messages," Rigi told the station. MKO is listed as a terrorist organization by the US, Iran, and Iraq. Nevertheless, the US government has still not classified Jundullah as a proscribed terrorist organization.

Obama urges diplomacy on Iran US President Barack Obama has called for a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear issue, despite Washington's disregard for Tehran's diplomatic initiatives. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday, Obama said, "Let me be clear once more: the United States and the international community seek a resolution to our differences with Iran, and the door remains open to diplomacy should Iran choose to walk through it." "But the Iranian government must demonstrate a clear and credible commitment and confirm to the world the peaceful intent of its nuclear program," AFP quoted him as saying. Obama's comments come while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has in different reports confirmed the non-diversion of Iran's nuclear program. Iran signed a nuclear declaration with Turkey and Brazil in May as a diplomatic effort to solve the standoff with the West over its nuclear program. Foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey, and Brazil signed the declaration in the Iranian capital Tehran on May 17, according to which the Islamic Republic would ship 1200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be exchanged for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel rods to power the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment. The US and its allies, however, disregarded the declaration by imposing a fourth round of UN Security Council sanctions against Iran. Iran has criticized the US-engineered UN sanctions, arguing that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and an IAEA member, it has the right to pursue and benefit from nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. Tehran announced in September that it was ready to resume talks on its nuclear program, but stressed that any negotiations must be conducted within the framework of the Tehran declaration. Obama's call for diplomacy on Iran comes as major world powers have also urged resumption of talks with Iran over its nuclear program. Foreign ministers of the P5+1 — China, France, Russia, Britain and the US plus Germany — said in a statement on Wednesday that they seek a "long-term negotiated solution" to Iran's nuclear issue.

US, Israel behind cyber-attack on Iran? Experts say a computer worm that has targeted Iran's industrial sites may be part of a cyber-attack by the US or Israel against the Islamic Republic. The Stuxnet, a computer worm that is viewed as potentially the most dangerous piece of computer malware discovered, has targeted industrial computers in Iran. The complex worm recognizes a specific facility's control network and then destroys it. Experts say the worm, which has a very sophisticated design, may have been created by a state-sponsored organization in the US or Israel to target specific control software being used in the Iranian industrial sector, including the Bushehr plant -- Iran's first nuclear power plant. "All the details so far to me scream that this was created by a nation-state," Bloomberg quoted Frank Rieger, technology chief for a maker of encrypted mobile phones, as saying. Iran's nuclear facilities may have been the targets, said both Rieger and Richard Falkenrath of the Chertoff Group, a Washington-based security advisory firm. "It is theoretically possible that the US government did this," Falkenrath said during an interview with Bloomberg Television on Saturday. "But in my judgment, that's a very remote possibility. It's more likely that Israel did it." Meanwhile, a top US cyber-security official claims that the US does not know who is behind the cyber-attack and is still analyzing the worm. "We've conducted analysis on the software itself," Sean McGurk, director of the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center, told reporters on Friday. "It's very difficult to say 'This is what it was targeted to do,'" he said, adding the center was not looking for those behind the attack but it rather sought to prevent the spread. The US and Israel accuse Iran of developing a nuclear weapons program. Iran rejects the allegation, saying its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes. Israeli forces kill two Palestinians In another blow to the stalemated Middle East talks, Israeli forces have shelled the Gaza Strip, killing two Palestinians and injuring four others. Hamas officials said an Israeli navy boat shelled an area north of Gaza City early on Sunday, the Associated Press reported. Palestinian medical sources have confirmed the deaths, adding that four other Palestinians were also injured in the Israeli attack. The incident comes as US-brokered talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel failed to resolve their past disputes. Israel has repeatedly attacked Gaza since the end of its war on the tiny densely-populated coastal strip at the turn of last year. Gaza has also been under an Israeli siege since 2007. Renowned Jewish-American scholar Noam Chomsky says US invasion of Afghanistan was illegal since to date there is no evidence that al-Qaeda has carried out the 9/11 attacks. "The explicit and declared motive of the [Afghanistan] war was to compel the Taliban to turn over to the United States, the people who they accused of having been involved in World Trade Center and Pentagon terrorist acts. The Taliban…they requested evidence…and the Bush administration refused to provide any," the 81-year-old senior academic made the remarks on Press TV's program a Simple Question. "We later discovered one of the reasons why they did not bring evidence: they did not have any." The political analyst also said that nonexistence of such evidence was confirmed by FBI eight months later. "The head of FBI, after the most intense international investigation in history, informed the press that the FBI believed that the plot may have been hatched in Afghanistan, but was probably implemented in the United Arab Emirates and Germany." Chomsky added that three weeks into the war, "a British officer announced that the US and Britain would continue bombing, until the people of Afghanistan overthrew the Taliban... That was later turned into the official justification for the war." "All of this was totally illegal. It was more, criminal," Chomsky said. The 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan was launched with the official objective of curbing militancy and bringing peace and stability to the country. Nine years on, however, the American and Afghan officials admit that the country remains unstable and civilians continue to pay the heaviest price.

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri plans to visit Iran in November in an effort to expand ties with the Islamic Republic, a newspaper close to his political alliance has reported. Hariri announced his plans to visit Iran in a recent meeting of his Future Movement political party, major Lebanese daily An-Nahar reported, quoted by IRNA on Sunday. The Lebanese daily, affiliated with the March 14 Alliance which is close to the Lebanese premier, said Hariri's visit will likely take place in late November. Another influential Lebanese daily As-Safir also confirmed the reported planned visit and siad that Hariri's trip to Iran will likely take place on November 28 and 29. An IRNA report from Beirut, however, quotes an informed source in Hariri's office as describing the reports as "media speculations." While not denying the planned visit, the source stated that the "official date" of the visit has not been announced "though it will not take long for it to be set." The Lebanese prime minister is due to visit Russia on Monday and then travel to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for an official visit. According to the IRNA report, Abu-Dhabi will be Hariri's next destination before his visit to Iran. Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad led a high-level delegation in a landmark visit to Lebanon last October in which he emphasized Iran's determination to expand ties with the country in all fields.

The US official identified by police as Raymond Davis shot dead two men riding on a motorcycle in Lahore on Thursday in what he claimed was self-defense during an attempted robbery. A third Pakistani was run over and killed in the incident after being hit by a US consulate vehicle rushing to the scene to the American's aid. The US embassy in Islamabad has confirmed the man involved was a consular official and says it is carrying out an investigation. Trying to avoid an anti-American reaction, US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said Thursday that Washington will fully cooperate with Pakistani authorities and will explain about the incident to the Pakistani people. Pakistani media say the US embassy official charged with the murder of two Pakistani citizens is an agent for the notorious security firm, Blackwater.

A huge crowd of anti-US protesters took to the streets in Karachi to denounce the killing of two motorcycle riders in the city of Lahore by a US consular official. Pakistani police have charged the diplomat with double murder. According to a provincial minister, the US official believed the two intended to rob him. A pedestrian was also killed by a speeding car from the US consulate. These demonstrators are protesting against the recent killings in Lahore by the US diplomats and for the immediate release of Afia siddiqui, an American-educated neuroscientist who was sentenced to 86 years in jail in the US after being convicted of trying to kill an American soldier. Anti-US sentiments run high in Pakistan. American drone attacks are another source of growing anger at the US and its policies. Over one thousand civilian have been killed so far in these attacks. Pakistani media speculate that the consulate official charged with the murder of two Pakistani citizens is an agent of the notorious US private security firm, XE (Zee) services formerly known as Blackwater. Muhammad Aslam Tarin, Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) says the men who were shot dead had no previous criminal records, adding that none of them had robbed or fired at the diplomat. The US embassy in Islamabad confirmed that Davis was a consular worker but said it was still trying to work out with the police what had happened. What does US government say? Washington is apparently wary of the rising anti-American sentiment in Pakistan given its strategic partnership with Islamabad, but analysts remain skeptical about the strength and future of US ties with regional nations. After all, many Pakistanis say they view the United States with suspicion or outright enmity because of what they call Washington's interfering policies in the Muslim world.
