UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi says Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could play a constructive role in a future transition in his country. In an interview with a French magazine ahead of his trip, he said a deal on Syria\'s arsenal of chemical weapons has transformed Assad from Quote-- a pariah into a partner. On Sunday, the veteran Algerian diplomat was in Tehran, where he insisted on Iran\'s participation in the Geneva conference. However, Brahimi faces an uphill task in convincing the fractured foreign-backed opposition to attend the talks. And 19 militant groups have issued threats against those who plan to attend the Geneva conference. Brahimi says he fears Syria may become a failed state like Somalia if a peace agreement cannot be reached.

The US Secretary of State criticizes Russia for what he calls support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. John Kerry has said that with support from Moscow, Damascus stonewalled the second round of peace talks in Geneva. He added that such support would let the Syrian president continue destroying his own country. Kerry also blamed the Syrian government for the failure of the Geneva talks-- saying the government delegation refused to open up one moment of discussion during the meetings. He says the vote will go ahead if all conflicting sides show their will to ensure security. Abdollahian stressed that the polls won\'t be held in calm, unless the borders are controlled and the flow of arms into the country is stopped. The deputy Iranian foreign minister in Arab and African Affairs also urged the foreign countries involved in the Syria war to allow Syrians to decide their destiny through the ballot box.

Large numbers of Ba’ath Party members and supporters rallied across several Syrian cities marking the 65th anniversary of the Party’s establishment. In the capital Damascus, supporters packed into Saba’ Bahrat square, showing their support for the Ba’ath Party and the president Bashar al-Assad. Syrians waved the Syrian flag and sang national anthem in a show of unity against what they described as a conspiracy targeting their country. Syrians reiterated their adherence to the Ba'ath Party principles, including supporting the Palestinian cause and resisting the Israeli occupation. The Ba’ath Party was the only ruling party in Syria for decades. Nevertheless, Syrians in a referendum in February voted for a new constitution which allowed a multiparty system in the country and political pluralism which gave all political parties the right to share power. Supporters have gathered to renew adherence to their party led by president Bashar al-Assad, expressing confidence in the party’s ability to build a new Syria stronger than before.

Assad War in Syria between \'nation and terrorists\' - English

A newly-emerged letter on social media has revealed that Saudi Arabia agreed to the plan to send many criminals for fighting in Syria back in 20-12. The letter was apparently issued by the Arab monarchy\'s Interior Ministry in March last year. It says the accused were from different nationalities. They would receive amnesty if they agreed to being trained and sent to Syria for fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad. The letter also shows that most of the criminals were convicted of drug-related offences, murder, and rape, and had to be beheaded by sword under Saudi law. Syria\'s envoy to the U-N had earlier revealed that SAUDI criminals were among the militants fighting against Damascus. Bashar al-Ja\'fari said the Saudi intelligence was aware of the presence of such criminals in Syria.
