Turkish media say the country\'s military has launched an aerial strike on a convoy of al-Qaeda-linked militants inside the Syrian territory. The strike involved F-16 fighter jets that targeted several vehicles belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant - known as the ISIL. The attack occurred on Tuesday in northern Syria along the border with Turkey. There have been reports of casualties. The media say the Turkish troops opened fire on ISIL\'s positions in northern Syria. This after a mortar shell fired from Syria landed in Turkish territory during clashes between the ISIL and the Free Syrian Army.

[23 June 2012] Iranian president in Venezuela to boost bilateral ties - English Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warmly greeted his close ally Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the presidential palace in Caracas. The Iranian leader arrived in Venezuela's capital from stops in Brazil, where he attended the United Nations Rio+20 conference in Rio de Janeiro, and Bolivia.Chavez and Ahmadinejad vowed to keep building closer ties. The Venezuelan president has expressed solidarity with Iran on its nuclear energy program which Iran insists it's for peaceful purposes. Caracas and Tehran have signed an estimated five billion dollars worth of trade deals and accords since 2001 including construction projects, car factories and most recently an agreement for Caracas to manufacture unmanned aerial aircrafts better known as drones.The United States has looked at these accords with disapproval and last year put sanctions on Venezuela's state oil company for making deals with Iran's energy sector.Chavez criticized the sanctions against Iran and pledged to continue being Tehran's key ally in Latin America.This is President Ahmadinejad second visit to Venezuela this year. According to Hugo Chavez there have been more than 300 bilateral accords signed by both countries.

Iran unveils home-built combat drone, Iran unveils its first domestically-manufactured long-range Unmanned Aerial Vehicle UAV in a ceremony marking Defense Industry Day in the country. The unveiling of the home-made drone, named Karrar took place in the presence of Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and a number of defense officials. The Karrar UAV is capable of carrying a military payload of rockets to carry out bombing missions against ground targets. It is also capable of flying long distances at a very high speed. Iran's defense industries have demonstrated spectacular progress in the recent year, launching numerous domestically-built armaments, including aerial and sea-borne military vehicles such as submarines, combat frigates, and various types of missiles. Iran inaugurated the production line of two domistically-built UAVs with bombing and reconnaissance capabilities. The two hi-tech drones named 'Ra'd' (Thunder) and 'Nazir' (Harbinger) are capable of performing long-range reconnaissance, patrolling, assault and bombing missions with high precision. Ra'd, a UAV especially designed for assault and bombing missions, has the capability to destroy specific targets with high precision. Tehran established an arms development program during the 1980-88 war that Iraq waged against Iran to counter the weapons embargo imposed on it by the US and its Western allies. Since 1992, Iran has manufactured its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles and fighter planes. Iran successfully tested a home-made radar-evading UAV with bombing capabilities in June 2009. In 2008, the Islamic Republic's Defense Industries launched production lines of two home-built fighter jets, namely Saeqeh (Thunderbolt) and Azarakhsh (Lightening).

His eminence unveiled footage intercepted from Israeli surveillance planes of the site of the 2005 murder of ex-Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri prior to his assassination. Several clips, each minutes long and undated, showed aerial views of the coastline off west Beirut on various days prior to the Hariri assassination. Sayyed Nasrallah was speaking during an exceptional press conference he held at Shahed hall in Beirut\'s southern suburb of Beirut. The conference, attended by media outlets\' top editors and journalists, was set to mark political turning point in the case of Hariri\'s murder and open new horizons that the court could pick up and build on \"if it wanted to be impartial.\"

IAEA resolution looms large on Israel Arab states remain adamant about bringing Israel to account for its nuclear activities by proposing a relevant draft resolution to UN's nuclear watchdog for its upcoming annual conference. As the 54th annual general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is set to convene next week, there is great international anticipation for a major focus on Tel Aviv's nuclear activities, after so many years of ignoring the issue. "The Arab Group urges to keep the item 'Israeli nuclear capabilities' on the agenda of the general conference and ... will submit a draft resolution," said the Sudanese envoy to the organization, Mahmound El-Amin on behalf of 22 Arab states, AFP reported. "The Arab Group requests the IAEA member states to support the draft resolution and vote in favor of it," he added. The Israeli regime is widely believed to have manufactured numerous nuclear warheads since 1958, a year after IAEA's inception. The agency, however, has so far refused to ratify any resolutions on Israel's nuclear activities. Former US President Jimmy Carter has attested to the existence of the Israeli nuclear arsenal, confirming that it includes between 200 to 300 warheads. Decades of recurrent reporting and aerial footage have also established the Israeli possession of atomic arms. The IAEA Director General, Yukiya Amano recently reported to the agency's Board of Governors about the nuclear program, saying that Tel Aviv was restricting the agency from examining its nuclear potentials. The report, however, merely calls on Tel Aviv to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and "place all its nuclear facilities under comprehensive IAEA safeguards," with no enforcement or follow-up measures behind it. El-Amin called the report "weak and disappointing" and said that the organization uses "double standards" when it comes to Israel. Efforts by Arab states and other countries caused an NPT review conference in May to issue a statement, highlighting the importance of Tel Aviv's acceding to the treaty and its allowing the IAEA to fully inspect its nuclear sites. The United States, Israel's strongest ally, has served its Arab allies with a warning against supporting the draft resolution on Israel's nuclear activities, arguing that it poses risks to the renewed direct talks between the Tel Aviv regime and the Palestinian Authority (PA). Many Palestinian groups have already abandoned hope in the process, citing the White House's partiality in favor of the Israelis and arguing that the acting PA Chief, Mahmoud Abbas, does not represent most Palestinians. The Iranian Army has launched its biggest nationwide air defense drill to prepare against any possible attacks "on public or nuclear sites.

Iran tests radars on 3rd day of drills Iran's military has entered the third day of its biggest ever nationwide air drills, with testing radar capabilities in defending the country's territory. The anti-air defense units from Iran's Armed Forces and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) are taking part in the five-day air defense maneuvers dubbed Defenders of Velayat Skies, which began on Tuesday. According to the spokesman for the military drills Brigadier Hamid Arzhangi, various kinds of fixed and mobile radars that have been domestically manufactured or refurbished would be tested during the third day of the drills on Thursday. He further explained that radars would be used to detect and identify objects and pass relevant data to the operational units. The military official added that all types of the country's radar systems, which would relay intelligence to the unified command and control network of the central headquarters, would be utilized and examined during the third day of the maneuvers. He pointed out that reconnaissance missions to detect state-of-the-art systems of theatrical enemies using radars were also on the agenda of the third day of drills. During the second day of the maneuvers on Wednesday, advanced equipment used for communication and exchange of intelligence along with modern electro-optical systems were successfully tested and utilized. The air maneuvers are being held near Iran's strategic sights and landmarks, aiming to assess performance of new air defense systems and enhance rapid response capabilities in countering potential aerial attacks. Iranian military officials say the drills convey a message of peace and friendship to neighboring countries and a fierce warning against enemies. Iran simulates Electronic Warfare in drills An Iranian commander says the Air Force has "analyzed and conducted" Electronic Warfare (EW) missions during the first three days of its biggest defense drills. "EW means jamming the enemies' electronic systems, equipment, and capabilities and the mission of this war is to seize and control electromagnetic fields," Colonel Moharam Qolizadeh said on Thursday. "We have analyzed and conducted EW missions in the drills [dubbed] 'Modafean Aseman Velayt 3' (Guardians of Velayati Skies)," he added. The colonel said the maneuvers were aimed at "spotting [the enemy] without being spotted" and tapping the enemy communications lines without compromising transmissions by Iranian forces. Earlier on Thursday, the spokesman for the military drills Brigadier General Hamid Arzhangi said Iran had successfully tested a new generation of its first domestically-manufactured air defense system during the third day of the nationwide air drills. The Mersad (Ambush) modern medium-range system is capable of spotting and destroying advanced aircraft at low and high altitudes. In addition to its high mobility, Mersad's new generation can be used in electronic warfare and can be networked with other radar and defense systems, Arzhangi added. The forces were also set to test various models of fixed and mobile radars that have been domestically manufactured or refurbished. Air defense units from Iran's Armed Forces and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) are taking part in the five-day air maneuvers.

US President Barack Obama has defended his administration\'s use of drones as legal, effective, and just. \"We are at war with an organization that right now would kill as many Americans as they could if we did not stop them first. So this is a just war,\" Obama said in a major policy speech at Washington\'s National Defense University on Thursday. \"Our nation is still threatened by terrorists,\" he pointed out, noting that \"We must recognize however, that the threat has shifted and evolved from the one that came to our shores on 9/11,\" he said. The US president claimed the strikes have been effective in targeting militants and have made the United States a safer country. Obama outlined the legal guidelines surrounding the use of unmanned aerial vehicles to wage war in distant lands. \"I don\'t not believe it would be constitutional for the government to target and kill any U.S. citizen...Nor should any president deploy armed drones over US soil. But when a US citizen goes abroad to wage war against American and is actively plotting to kill US citizens...his citizenship should no more serve as a shield than a sniper shooting down an innocent crowd should be protected from a swat team,\" he said. On Wednesday, US Attorney General Eric Holder admitted for the first time that four US citizens were murdered in assassination drone attacks conducted by the CIA in Pakistan and Yemen since 2011.

A new report suggests Pakistani government officials have for years secretly endorsed the U-S drone campaign in their country. The report published by the Washington Post is based on leaked secret C-I-A documents and Pakistani diplomatic memos. It says Pakistani officials routinely obtained classified briefings despite their condemnations of the drone strikes. The files describe dozens of attacks in Pakistan\'s tribal region during 2007 and 2011. They include maps as well as aerial photographs of the targeted areas taken before-and-after the attacks. Former Pakistani premier Yousuf Raza Gilani has vehemently denied giving the U-S the approval. This comes as the current Pakistani prime minister urges the U-S president to end the attacks. Nawaz Sharif has warned that drone attacks could undermine ties between the two countries.

UN officials are calling on Israel to end the blockade of the Gaza Strip. They\'re warning that the situation in the Palestinian territory may get even worse. The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees says the Israeli blockade has paralyzed Gaza\'s construction industry. Robert Turner also said that the demolition of tunnels used by Gazans to transfer goods and construction materials to the enclave has put U-N projects on hold. This, after Egyptian authorities also stepped up the destruction of the tunnels in recent months. Meanwhile, another U-N official, James Rawley has also waned about the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territory over a lack of fuel there. Gaza\'s fuel crisis has led to the closure of its main power plant in recent months. Israel imposed its all-out land, aerial, and naval blockade on Gaza in June 2007 after the victory of Hamas in elections there.

A US unmanned aerial vehicle has crashed in eastern Afghanistan. The drone went down in Chaparhar-- a district in the center of Nangarhar province on Friday. A local official says the plane crashed because of technical problems. But the Taliban militants claim they shot it down. No casualties have been reported. Following the crash, American forces arrived at the site and took away the wreckage of the drone.

Anger continues to prevail in Pakistan over the U-S assassination drone campaign there. Pakistan\'s main opposition now urges the government to officially block the supply routes for US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan. The Jamaat-e-Islami chief called it the best time to pressure Washington into putting an end to its deadly aerial attacks. He says the closure of routes could prove a serious disruption as US-led forces prepare for a planned withdrawal from Afghanistan next year. The statements came as protesters in northwestern Pakistan continued the blockade of NATO supplies to Afghanistan. The decision to halt the supplies was taken last week by a regional government controlled by Imran Khan\'s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party. Pakistan is the main supply route for foreign forces in landlocked Afghanistan.

In Syria, at least 25 people have died in air raids in Aleppo. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 14 children are among the dead. The Britain-based observatory group said the aerial attack using explosives-laden barrels occurred over the Sakhur, Ard al-Hamra and Heydariyeh districts in eastern Aleppo. The Syrian government has not commented on the incident yet.

The chorus of opposition to US drone attacks is getting louder and louder in Yemen. The Yemeni parliament has banned the drone attacks in a symbolic vote. Anger has been on the rise at the US drone attacks in Yemen. The country has seen several protests against deadly raids by the unmanned aerial vehicles. Washington has stepped up its drone operations in Yemen in recent months. The attacks have killed many people. The US says it\\\'s targeting al-Qaeda linked militants. But many Yemenis call this a violation of their sovereignty. The American drone strikes have killed large numbers of people in other Muslims countries, including Pakistan. The United Nations has condemned the US for using its drones for what the world body calls targeted killings.

People in Pakistan\\\'s North Waziristan accuse government forces of killing civilians during an anti-Taliban operation in the region. Local residents have put the civilian death toll at several dozen. They say a large number have also fled their homes following days of military shelling and aerial raids. The army launched an offensive in response to an attack on a checkpoint in North Waziristan. Pakistan\\\'s mountainous border with Afghanistan is known as a stronghold for Taliban militants. Military officials say nearly two dozen militants have been killed in clashes with security forces since last week. Authorities have also imposed a curfew across the lawless region.

The Afghan president calls for a quick end to the US drone airstrikes and military operations in his country. President Hamid Karzai renewed the demand during a meeting with a fact-finding team probing a recent US strike in the eastern Parwan province. The inquiry said earlier that the aerial attack killed 14 civilians, mostly kids. Anger has been simmering among the Afghan public and officials over an escalation in US-led strikes in civilian areas. Afghans have held numerous protests nationwide against such attacks. President Karzai has time and again slammed the drone strikes which mostly result in civilian deaths.
