The holy month's beginning is based on sighting of the moon which is usually confirmed by religious authorities. However in multicultural Ukraine, some Muslim communities go ahead with the date announced by their countries of origin and others follow the date of their country of residence.
The holy days of Ramadan begin and end with the prayers. The evening prayer is followed by the fastbreaking iftar. In Ukraine Iftar menu is as multicultural as Ukrainian Muslims are.
Fasting is intended to remind Muslims of self-discipline and self-restraint. During Ramadan, Muslims avoid from eating, drinking and smoking during the daylight. They have food twice a day, one before sun rises and the other after the sun set.
Fasting in Ukraine has its own features, says this mufti. For instance the daylight length in the country may climb to 18 hours. Ukrainian Muslims also point to the high humidity of the climate which makes people feel the heat.
However most Muslims in Ukraine don't see any problem in this
This year Ukrainian Muslim communities invited muftis from Saudi Arabia and Egypt to perform readings during Ramadan. The holy month will be also marked by charities and sharing food with the needy.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Iran calls for prosecution of the country\'s former President Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych. This after an escalation of violent clashes between Ukrainian anti-government protesters and security forces. The protesters demanded the removal of President Victor Yanukovych. Although Yanukovych gave some concessions and signed a peace deal with the pro-Western opposition on Friday, he was ousted from office by the parliament on a day later and an arrest warrant has been issued for him. Ukrainian ambassador to Iran believes that he is responsible for the deaths of protesters who were killed in the clashes.

Deadly clashes in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. At least five anti-government protesters are killed and scores of others-- including police officers-- are injured.
Reports say over 47 police officers and 150 protesters were injured in the clashes. Violence erupted as protesters gathered outside the parliament building. Opposition lawmakers unsuccessfully attempted to pass constitutional changes stripping President Viktor Yanukovych of some of his powers. A group of protesters also attacked the ruling-party headquarters. Russia blamed the policies of Western countries for the latest clashes between pro-E-U protesters and police. The E-U and the U-S on the one side and Russia on the other, have accused each other of interfering in Ukraine\'s internal affairs.

Ukraine has been hit with a wave of political unrest since late November when President Viktor Yanukovych refused to sign a trade pact with the European Union.
The refusal to sign the deal triggered major street protests by the opposition supporters, who want Ukraine to become closer to the EU and distance itself from Russia.
Clashes erupted several times between the anti-government protesters and police forces during the demonstrations. Several arrests were made in the course of the protests as well.
In an effort to calm the political unrest, Yanukovych on Wednesday invited all parties, including the opposition, to engage in dialog to resolve the crisis facing the country.
Ukrainian opposition leaders rejected Yanukovych\'s offer of negotiations, calling for dismissal of his government and release of detained protesters.
Russia has criticized Western nations for interfering in Ukraine, saying protests against Kiev\'s decision to back away from the EU deal were destabilizing the former Soviet state.
The Russian parliament, the State Duma, in a non-binding statement on Tuesday urged the West to \"stop mounting external pressure on the politics of a country that is brotherly to us.\"
The lower house of parliament also called on Ukrainian opposition forces to \"stop illegal actions\" over the political crisis.

Alongside with Muslims all over the world, Ukrainian Muslims gathered to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. The ritual began with a recitation of the Quran and speeches in praise of the Prophet. Unlike previous years, this time the celebration is more profound. An exhibition titled \"The Heritage of the Islamic Civilization\" has been held to display the genealogical tree of Prophet Muhammad, pictures and history of Muslim Mosques around the world, and famous scientific discoveries of the Muslim world. Also on display are common traditional clothes of 12 Muslim nations. What one may easily feel here, as an exhibition participant said, is that today all Muslim nations feel very comfortable in Ukraine.

They are holding Syrian and Ukrainian flags, which symbolize solidarity between the two nations.
This peaceful gathering in Ukraine\'s capital Kiev speaks against terrorism in Syria, which protesters say, is sponsored by some Arab and Western governments.
Ukraine has been supporting the Syrian government since the unrest began in March 2011 in the Arab nation. These people say they feel free to protest here as Ukraine is against any foreign military intervention, especially if it claims thousands of lives.

The shocking killing of Lee Rigby earlier this year by people believing themselves to be Muslims was predictably followed by weeks of media coverage.
Although such extremism is contradictory to Islam, Muslims felt it necessary to again denounce this extremism.
However, there was another victim of extremism shortly after, 82-year old Mohammed Saleem. He was stabbed three times until he died on his way home from prayers.
The extremist was Ukrainian student Pavlo Lapshyn, a man who also bombed several mosques in Britain.
British media has been comparably quiet. Was it because his beliefs were not expressed as Islamic?
This week\'s Islam and Life asks: Which victim of extremism will Britain remember: Lee Rigby or Mohammed Saleem?

Ukraine crisis is getting to the close to the point of no return: Is this the beginning of a civil war in Ukraine? The violence indicates it\'s getting there: 67 people killed in the past 3 days including 13 police officers, 39 people on Thursday alone. What forces are at play pushing this violence? Is there a coup attempt? Why and how did some of the protesters gain their arms? The European Union foreign ministers have agreed to impose sanctions on Ukrainian individuals suspected of violence against anti-government protesters with Russia calling it blackmail, sending in a mediator: is all of this over joining the EU, or is it about pulling Ukraine out of Russia\'s sphere? Is Ukraine the US-Russia Cold War chessboard? Lot\'s of questions coming up in this edition of the debate.

Ukraine\'s ousted president Victor Yanukovych has spoken, from Russia: Among the key points he made in his reaction to the events in his country: he said he still saw himself as the Ukrainian president and as such believed that Crimea must remain part of Ukraine, even though he would not run for the May presidential elections, blasting the West for allegedly betraying a Feb. 21 agreement between the government and the opposition. Meanwhile in Crimea, where the Russian navy fleet is located: it was voted that concurrent to the May presidential elections in Ukraine, Crimea would hold a referendum on its future status, whether it will remain part of Ukraine or will join Russia.
What would NATO\'s reaction be, who has warned it considered Ukraine\'s future to be \"key to Euro-Atlantic security\" and assured the new government in Kiev that the alliance would back its \"sovereignty.\"
