US-Israel ties at Risk? 15 March 10 - English

The new US administration has not shied away from criticising Israel's illegal settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territorities.
And when Israel announced plans to build 1,600 new settler homes in East Jerusalem while Joe Biden, the US vice-president, was visiting the country last week as part of a Middle East peace inititative - the US was not happy.
A senior US official has called the timing of the announcement an "insult".
And Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, had earlier told Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, that his government was putting "US ties at risk" by failing to take action towards renewed Middle East peace talks.
Although Netanyahu has apologised for the timing of the announcement, Israel is not showing any signs of stopping the settlement expansion and the US is not backing down from its tough criticism.

Contributed by Herald. February 8th, 2010, 6:01 pm Eleven people were arrested Monday evening during a raucous lecture at UC Irvine where Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren came to talk about U.S.-Israel relations. (UCI earlier said that 12 were arrested.) Oren was interrupted 10 times Monday while trying to give his speech before 500 people at the UCI Student Center, where there was heavy security. Oren took a 20 minute break after the fourth protest, asked for hospitality and resumed his speech, only to be interrupted again by young men yelling at him every few minutes. Many members of the audience also applauded Oren. After the 10th interruption, several dozens students who opposed Oren’s talk got up and walked out and staged a protest outside. It is not clear whether they were members of the UCI Muslim Student Union, which issued an email earlier in the day condemning Oren’s appearance on campus. Oren continued talking, completing his speech at 6:42 p.m. Originally, he planned to take question from the audience. But that was canceled after the repeated delays. The second person yelled about “Zionism.†The third yelled, “Israel.†The fourth could not be clearly heard. UCI Police Chief Paul Henisey said it is not clear whether any of the protesters are UCI students. Mark Petracca, a UCI political science professor, lost his temper and yelled, “This is embarrassing … Shame on all of you.†UCI Chancellor Michael Drake also told the audience that he was embarrassed by the outburst. Drake and Petracca were booed by many people, and applauded by others. Hours earlier, UCI’s Muslim Student Union said in an email today that its members “condemn and oppose the presence of Michael Oren, the ambassador of Israel to the United States, on our campus today. We resent that the Law School and the Political Science Department on our campus have agreed to cosponsor a public figure who represents a state that continues to break international and humanitarian law and is condemned by more UN Human Rights Council resolutions than all other countries in the world combined.†The Jewish Federation Orange County said earlier in the day that it had been informed that Oren’s speech at UC Irvine late today might be disrupted by protestors. Shalom C. Elcott, president of JFOC, said in a statement today that, “We have been informed that some students may attempt to disrupt the event. We want to assure the community that our goal is to create a positive environment — indeed, a sacred space – for open dialogue, intellectual debate and civil discourse that befits a university setting.†This was not the first time that there has been confrontation at a political lecture at UCI. In January 2007, Daniel Pipes of the Middle East Forum was interrupted by protesters at UCI while giving a speech titled, “The Threat to Israel’s Existence.†The protesters ended up getting into a brief shouting match with some members of the audience.

Using state-of-the-art computer animation this documentary transports you into the interior of the living cell to explore systems and machines that bear the unmistakable hallmarks of design. Rotary motors that spin at 100,000 rpm. A biological information processing system more powerful than any computer network. And a thread-like molecule that stores instructions to build the essential components of every living organism on earth. Unlocking the Mystery of Life documents how scientists are abandoning Darwinian explanations for the origin of life and looking to theories of design for new answers.

Transcription: "With a crested head, black mask around its eyes and brilliant red body, the Northern Cardinal is one of the most famous birds in North America.
It is a mid-sized songbird that lives in wooded areas and has a distinct orange beak shaped perfectly for eating seeds which make up the majority of its diet.
The Northern Cardinal does not migrate. It is a year-round resident whose range extends from southern Canada to Mexico on the eastern half of the continent.
The plumage of the males feathers is much brighter and more vibrant than that of the females it is trying to attract.
It learns its song, so the tune of the cardinal will vary by region.
This beautiful bird is named after the cardinals in the Roman Catholic Church who wore red robes and caps.
It is the state bird in seven states - North Carolina, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia."

PA to renew Israeli talks without freeze
Despite Israel's refusal to extend its settlement freeze, the Palestinian Authority (PA) will still resume the second round of direct talks with Tel Aviv.
The upcoming meeting will be held at Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Tuesday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and acting PA Chief Mahmoud Abbas held the first round of negotiations in Washington on September 2.
Following the first meeting, Abbas warned that he would leave the negotiations should Israel resume its illegal settlement activities.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and US Middle East Envoy George Mitchell will also travel to Egypt to attend the meeting.
The four officials will then move to al-Quds (Jerusalem) for a second day of talks on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama will meet with Abbas and Netanyahu in New York next week during the UN General Assembly meeting.
The second round of Israeli-PA talks comes after Israel on Monday approved the construction of more than 13,000 new settler units in the occupied West Bank.
In November, the Israeli premier announced a 10-month freeze on illegal settlement expansion projects in the occupied West Bank.
But Tel Aviv has repeatedly violated the freeze, which expires on September 26, by continuing to construct more settlement units.

Israeli tanks roll into Gaza Strip
Israeli tanks have attacked Palestinian refugee camp of al-Burage in their second invasion of the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.
The Israeli military claimed Monday that the attack was in retaliation for mortar attacks by Hamas fighters on southern Israel.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties, a Press TV correspondent reported.
The raid came after an Israeli tank on Sunday killed three people in the town of Beit Hanoun.
The Israeli violation of the coastal enclave comes after the Palestinian Authority engaged in direct talks with Tel Aviv.
The incursion is in violation of a Palestinian demand for Israel's complete withdrawal behind the borders of 1967, when it captured Gaza, the West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem).
Gaza is still far from recovering from the Israeli war at the turn of 2009, which killed more than 1,400 Palestinians, most of them civilians.

Indian troops kill dozens in Kashmir
At least 18 people have been killed and over 100 injured in Indian-controlled Kashmir as soldiers open fire on pro-independence rallies in disputed Himalayan region.
Security forces opened fire on tens of thousands of protesters in the Budgam and Tangmarg areas.
An Indian soldier was also killed in the violence.
The protests were particularly intense following the news of the desecration of the Quran in the US.
On Sunday, India imposed a curfew in many areas of Kashmir.
However, people have been pouring out to the streets across Kashmir to protest against Indian rule despite the curfews.
The latest round of public outrage began after a government forces' teargas grenade killed a teenager back in June.
More than 80 protesters and by-standers have lost their lives during the unrest ever since.

Kashmiris protest Quran desecration
Hundreds of Muslims have defied curfews in Indian-administered Kashmir and hit the streets to voice their anger over desecration of Islam's holy book in the US.
Protests were held in the region's main city of Srinagar and its neighboring districts despite strict curfews, The Nation reported on Monday.
"Death to the US!" and "Death to Quran desecrators!" chanted the protesters, who described the act as despicable.
The protesters also called for punishment of those behind the desecration of the Quran.
"These are absolutely pro-Islam protests and we demand befitting punishment to those who have desecrated the holy Quran. No Muslim anywhere in the world will watch the desecration of the holy Quran as a mute spectator. This protest is beyond borders and nationalities," a 55-year-old Kashmiri said.
Although an American pastor cancelled earlier plans to burn copies of the Quran, other anti-Islam elements in the US desecrated the holy book in New York and in Washington on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
The protest rallies in Srinagar erupted after local television showed a small group of protesters tearing apart and burning pages from the Muslim holy book outside the White House on Saturday.

India knocks Press TV off air in Kashmir
India has banned local cable operators in Indian-administered Kashmir from airing Iran's English-language Press TV in the disputed Himalayan region.
State Chief Secretary SS Kapur made the announcement in Kashmir's summer capital of Srinagar on Monday.
"We have decided to impose a ban on the airing of Press TV broadcasts by local cable operators," Kapur told reporters.
The ban comes as Press TV has become popular across the Muslim-majority region due to its enhanced coverage of the regional events over the past three months.
Media organizations have strongly condemned the move and demanded that the government put the channel back on air.
However, reports say more and more people in Kashmir continue to get their news from Press TV via internet services or direct broadcast satellites.
In a separate development, hundreds of Kashmiris have come out to the streets to voice their anger over the desecration of Islam's holy book in the US.
Protests were held in the Indian-administered region's main city of Srinagar, and its neighboring districts despite strict curfews in place.
The protesters, who were shouting anti-US slogans, described the act as despicable, calling for the punishment of those behind the desecration of the Quran.
The protests erupted after pages from the Muslim holy book were torn up and burned in Washington, as well as in other US cities.
The move has outraged Muslims all over the world.
Meanwhile, at least twelve people were killed in Indian-controlled Kashmir as soldiers opened fire on pro-independence rallies on Monday.
Unrest in Kashmir has claimed at least 83 lives over the past three months.
Kashmir has been rocked by a wave of protests over the death of a teenager back in June.
He was killed when Indian police fired teargas shells during demonstrations against India's rule over the mainly Muslim-populated Kashmir.

Lebanon condemns Quran burning plan
Lebanese President Michel Sleiman has condemned a US church\'s plan to burn copies of the Muslim holy book to mark the ninth anniversary of 9/11 attacks.
Speaking on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, Sleiman said on Wednesday that the controversial decision contradicts Christian teachings and humanitarian values such as love and respect, a Press TV correspondent reported.
\"The president condemns the announcement of a religious group in the United States of its intention to openly burn copies of the Quran,\" read a statement released by the president\'s office.
Burning the Quran \"is a clear contradiction of the teachings of the three Abrahamic religions and of dialogue among the three faiths,\" Christianity, Islam and Judaism, AFP quoted the Christian president as saying.
Pastor Terry Jones, who is part of the Dove World Outreach Center, a small evangelical Christian church in Gainesville, Florida, with an anti-Islam philosophy, has threatened to burn some 200 copies of the Quran on Saturday evening, the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
The threat has drawn international condemnation with Muslims launching protest rallies around the globe.
US officials have also denounced the plan but no legal measure has been taken yet to block the blasphemous move.
The US State Department also called the move \"un-American,\" while the US Attorney General Eric Holder called the idea \"idiotic and dangerous.\"
EU Foreign Affairs Chief Catherine Ashton condemned the planned act, while Arab League chief Amr Mussa dubbed Jones a \"fanatic\".
The Vatican council has blasted the Florida church\'s scheme as an \"outrageous and grave gesture against a book considered sacred by a religious community.\"
Many Muslim countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Indonesia have already held massive demonstrations against the US church\'s intent.

Iran wants IAEA to inspect Israel
Iran's nuclear point man says Tehran expects the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to "follow up" on a resolution to inspect Israel's nuclear facilities.
Last year, the General Conference agreed on a resolution requiring Israel to open up for IAEA inspection.
"This year we hope... that they would follow up on this, that the Zionist regime [of Israel] will open its nuclear sites to inspection by the IAEA and ... that the IAEA will also pursue this issue very firmly," Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi told Press TV.
Salehi said that Western countries were mounting pressure to prevent the IAEA from taking action. He expressed hope that the agency would carry out its obligation without taking sides.
Given that Israel is the sole possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, putting pressure on Tel Aviv is the least the IAEA can do, the AEOI head added.
Salehi's remarks comes as Arab member states of the IAEA plan to present a resolution to the body in the annual General Conference next week, urging Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Western countries, spearhead by the US, are urging the Arab members of the IAEA to drop the request.
US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said Wednesday that the IAEA was not the place to discuss Israel's membership in the NPT.
"Israel has fully cooperated with the IAEA," and "we believe there is really no basis for a debate at the IAEA," Philip Crowley said.

Abbas concedes settlement construction
The acting Palestinian Authority chief says direct talks with Tel Aviv will continue even if Israel resumes the construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
Mahmoud Abbas had repeatedly threatened to walk away from the US-sponsored direct negotiations, launched this month in Washington, if Tel Aviv does not extend its partial settlement freeze -- due to expire at the end of the month.
"I cannot say I will leave the negotiations, but it's very difficult for me to resume talks if Prime Minister Netanyahu declares that he will continue his activity in the West Bank and Jerusalem,'' Abbas told a closed meeting of Jewish American leaders in New York late Tuesday, according to a transcript of the event obtained by the Associated Press.
The U-turn will likely anger most Palestinians, who believe Abbas has backed away from his ultimatum under Washington pressure.
During the meeting, Abbas again asked Israel to extend the freeze for several months while the two sides negotiate the final borders between Israel and a future Palestinian state.
"Let's demarcate the border, at that time. Israelis will be free to build in their territory and the Palestinians the same,'' Abbas said.
Despite the international calls, Tel Aviv has so far refused to renew the partial 10-month freeze on new settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories. Israeli settlement expansion is illegal under international laws.

Rights activists criticize Bahrain govt.
A group of Human Right activists have expressed their concern over deteriorating human rights situation in the Persian Gulf state of Bahrain.
The Sunni-dominated government has intensified the crackdown launched against the Shia population, arresting dozens of opposition figures on suspicion of toppling the government.
In a letter to the Bahraini King, Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the officers of the Advisory Committee of Human Rights Watch's Middle East and North Africa division criticized the government.
The group also called on the King of Bahrain to defend human rights activists, saying they are worried about Nabeel Rajab, the head of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights and a member of the Advisory Committee.
The government-affiliated media accused Rajab of liaising with "international organizations."
The allegation came after the Bahrain Center for Human Rights criticized the government's recent arrests of opposition figures, the activists wrote.
In an interview with Press TV last week, Rajab said, "there is a continuous war against all Shias who are critics of the government."
Many of the opposition detainees were tortured and sexually assaulted, among them were religious figures, he revealed.
The population of Bahrain is predominantly Shia. However, the majority group has long complained of being discriminated against by the Sunni-dominated government in obtaining jobs and receiving services.
The Shia opposition also refuses to recognize the 2002 Constitution, which curbed the power of the Shia-majority parliament, and has called for the boycott of next month's parliamentary elections.
The following is the complete text of the letter to the King of Bahrain:
HRW raise concerns on targeting of human rights activists in Bahrain

“We have been attacked while in international waters. That means the Israelis have behaved like pirates … The moment they start to steer this ship towards Israel, we have also been kidnapped. The whole action is illegal.”—Henning Mankell, aboard the Gaza Freedom Flotilla
Eastern Mediterranean, Monday, May 31st, 2010, 4.30am: Israeli commandos, boarding from sea and air, attack the six boats of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla as it sails through international waters bringing humanitarian relief to the beleaguered Palestinians of Gaza. Within minutes, nine peace activists are dead, shot by the Israelis. Scores of others are injured. The 700 people on board the ships are arrested before being transported to detention centers in Israel and then deported.
Within hours, outrage at Israel’s action echoes around the world. Spontaneous demonstrations in Europe, the United States, Turkey, and Gaza itself denounce the attack. Turkey’s prime minister describes it as a “bloody massacre” and “state terrorism.” Lebanon’s prime minister calls it “a dangerous and crazy step that will exacerbate tensions in the region.”
In these pages, a range of activists, journalists, and analysts piece together the events that occurred that May night, unpicking their meanings for Israel’s illegal, three-year-long blockade of Gaza and the decades-long Israel/Palestine conflict more generally. Mixing together first-hand testimony, documentary record, and illustration, with hard-headed analysis and historical overview, Midnight on the Mavi Marmara reveals why the attack on Gaza Freedom Flotilla may just turn out to be Israels Selma, Alabama: the beginning of the end for an apartheid Palestine.
