NATO is holding one of its largest post-Cold War military drills near Russia\'s borders. Poland and the Baltic states are hosting the war games launched on Saturday. Code-named \"Steadfast Jazz\", the exercises involve some SIX thousand troops from NATO as well as non-member states such as Finland, Sweden and Ukraine. Around half of them will participate in live exercise training, which will involve armor, aircraft and naval vehicles. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says the week-long war games are designed to prepare forces to defend any ally from an unidentified foreign invader. NATO\'s recent actions have raised tensions in the region. Russia has already expressed concerns over NATO\'s missile and radar deployments in Eastern Europe calling them threats to its security.

Dozens of demonstrators have pretended to be dead on the streets of Lisbon, simulating what they say are the devastating effects of a NATO airstrike. Anti-NATO protester took to the floor as they participated in what they called a flashmob for peace, outside the Rossio train station, in Lisbon, Portugal, on Thursday. The flash-mob protest against the war in Afghanistan is just one of many demonstrations surrounding the two-day NATO summit in the Portuguese capital.

Erdogan said that Turkey changes the rules of engagement with Syria and branded its former ally as "a clear and imminent threat". Syrian military says that it had engaged the jet in the Syrian airspace "according to the laws that govern such situations." NATO has condemned Syria's downing of the Turkish jet as 'unacceptable' and promised support for Ankara. Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi on Monday warned NATO against forging any anti-Syria conspiracy on the downing of the Turkish fighter jet. "I do not believe that Russia and China are paying any price at all - nothing at all - for standing up on behalf of the [Syrian President Bashar] Assad regime." "The only way that will change is if every nation represented here directly and urgently makes it clear that Russia and China will pay a price," Clinton warned. These people are marching towards the largest port of Pakistan to register their protest over the resumption of NATO supplies route. Rasmussen says he believes that Karzai will not sign the long-stalled pact until April\'s presidential election. The deal would allow American troops to stay in Afghanistan beyond the withdrawal deadline of the end of 2014. Rasmussen has acknowledged that NATO expects a separate pact with Kabul which would be impossible without a deal with the U-S. Back in November, Karzai told an assembly of elders known as the Loya Jirga that he will not sign the deal until certain conditions are met. He\'s demanded that the US immediately stop its military operations on Afghan homes.

[15 July 2012] Pakistanis continue protest against NATO supply routes reopening - English Islamabad's decision to reopen its routes for supplies to US-led forces fighting in Afghanistan has sparked countrywide protests. Major political and religious parties are mobilizing masses to press the government to reverse its decision. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party called for an anti-US protest in metropolis Peshawar. Thousands of people took part in the protest and denounced the government's move to boost US reinforcement in neighboring Afghanistan.

[29 July 2012] Pakistan US to sign draft pack on NATO supply routes - English Pakistan will not allow the transportation of weapons or dangerous materials, including arms and ammunition in any circumstances through its routes to the US-led forces fighting in Afghanistan, says the draft of the 16-clause memorandum of understanding (MoU) to be signed between Islamabad and Washington. The draft which says the written accord has been drafted in accordance with the UN charter allows only the transportation of non-lethal cargo, including food, medicines, equipment and material for capacity building of the Afghan National Security Forces. These will be allowed to pass through the strategic routes which were recently reopened by Islamabad after a seven-month blockade.

Anger continues to prevail in Pakistan over the U-S assassination drone campaign there. Pakistan\'s main opposition now urges the government to officially block the supply routes for US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan. The Jamaat-e-Islami chief called it the best time to pressure Washington into putting an end to its deadly aerial attacks. He says the closure of routes could prove a serious disruption as US-led forces prepare for a planned withdrawal from Afghanistan next year. The statements came as protesters in northwestern Pakistan continued the blockade of NATO supplies to Afghanistan. The decision to halt the supplies was taken last week by a regional government controlled by Imran Khan\'s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party. Pakistan is the main supply route for foreign forces in landlocked Afghanistan.

Two parties in Pakistan, the Tehrik-e-Insaf and Jamat-e-Islami, have not let any NATO supply truck pass through the country\'s northwestern Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province for three weeks now.
