In this clip Mamdani argues that 20 to 30 percent died from direct violence. Others died because of independent causes like desertification and drought which actually preceded the conflict. The cause of violence was the civil war in Darfur and the insurgency and counter-insurgency - all with separate origins and causes. The third consideration was the Cold War which involved America France Israel on one side and on the other Libya and Soviet Union. Each side armed different sides in the civil war in Chad. In Darfur the Chad opposition organized itself and launched assaults on Chad.

Continuing from the previous clips where Mamdani has argued that there were internal and external causes of violence. The fourth erroneous assumption according to him in understanding the conflict is that the level of violence was steady. That may not have been the case. The fifth problem or erroneous assumption is that the Save Darfur movement has removed the history from this conflict. It feeds masses with the death estimates and details of the atrocities but not the internal and external politics contexts. The whole conflict is turned into a simplistic morality tale where one side is the OPPRESSOR and the other OPPRESSED. The media also contributed to this effect. Mamdani argues that we can learn from the experiences of South Africa and Mozambique where there were no winners and no losers in the end and a ceasefire and political justice of sorts were achieved.

Concerned about the devastation currently being inflicted on the people of Lebanon and Palestine by the Israeli Military Forces and with the very limited and biased reporting on these conflicts presented by most American media networks - students organized a teach-in on the UC Berkeley campus in order to give students faculty and the Bay Area community at large achance to gain a greater understanding of these events and to participate in an open discussion on their significance for both Americans and the people of the Middle East. During the first hour of this two-hour event four scholars with expertise in the Middle East presented short analyses - 15 minutes each - of the historical and political dimensions of this conflict focusing on the following themes. 1. The role US foreign policy has played in enabling and authorizing the Israeli bombardment 2. The origins and historical development of Hezbollah and the role of this movement within Lebanese social and political arenas 3. The shifting political alignments within Israel and their relation to the current war on Lebanon and to Israels role in the region more broadly 4. The impact of Israeli military actions in Gaza and the West Bank on the lives of Palestinians and the political landscape of the Palestinian society. The presentations were followed by audience questions and comments which is what this video is about. Ahmadinejad: IAEA under pressure Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is under Western pressure when it comes to reporting on Iran's nuclear program. "Western powers have dominated the agency. So when they prepare a new report they pick on two issues," Ahmadinejad told reporters on Friday. "They are not even sure to which legal article they can adhere to when they seek to speak against us." "They speak in general terms, and do not provide any evidence to show that we have committed any violations," he added. The president criticized the agency's latest report, in which Director General Yukiya Amano concludes that the IAEA verifies the non-diversion of "declared" nuclear material in Iran, but has adopted unusual wording with regard to the country's safeguards obligations. "We say we have shown you everything that we have...and when we ask them to show proof of the existence of this undeclared material, they ask us in turn to offer evidence that they are non-existent." Iranian officials reject Western accusations that Tehran is pursuing a military nuclear program, arguing that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Iran has the right to peaceful nuclear energy.
