[08 Aug 2012] Egypt holds funeral for soldiers slain in border attack - English Egypt Buried on Tuesday the bodies of 16 soliders slain near the Egyptian Border in the Sinai Peninsula close to Gaza and Israel. Thousands of mourners performed burial prayers. The coffins draped in the Egyptian flag were taken to a military memorial where the official military funeral commenced led by Hussein Tantawi. The family of a Palestinian man killed by israeli soldiers has been forced to cancel his funeral, after Israel refused to hand over his body. The Israeli army says its soldiers opened fire on Yusef after he drove into their base to attack them. However, his family says that the Israeli army prevented him from entering through the checkpoint on his way home from work. Yusef had become frustrated and drove through, where he was shot and killed. Yusef\'s father also said, when he arrived home in the evening, the Israeli army had raided his home and arrested three of his brothers who were released later. This is the second tragic incident for the family, as their other son had been murdered in a similar way just three years ago. Other relatives of Yusef also told us how Israel failed to meet its promise to hand over the body of the slain man. The Israelis have refused to hand over the body of Yousef, even after their family was waiting for hours to receive it. And this forced them to cancel the funeral for him, which was due to take place in Abudiyeh village in Bethlehem.

Bahraini forces have raided the funeral of an anti-regime activist who died in prison two days ago. Tear gas was fired to disperse thousands of people who had gathered at the funeral of Jafar al-Dirazi in his home town of al-Daih. In Yemen, tens of thousands of Shia mourners have attended the funeral procession of Houthi lawmaker Abel Kareem Jadban in Sana\'a. Jadban\'s body was carried by his Houthi supporters to the capital\'s airport and flown to the northern province of Sa\'da for burial. Jadban was a prominent Houthi lawmaker and the leading politician representing the Shia Houthi community in the national dialog, currently underway in the Arab country. He was gunned down by armed men on a motorbike as he was coming out of a mosque last Friday. The assassination came just weeks after deadly clashes between Houthi fighters and Saudi-backed Salafi militants in the northern town of Damaj.

In Bahrain, regime forces have once again used force against protesters. Regime forces fired tear gas and birdshot at a funeral procession for a young Bahraini protester, identified as Fadhil Abbas Muslim. He was shot earlier this month. Scores of people have been killed and many more injured since a popular uprising against the rule of the Al Khalifah family broke out in the Arab kingdom about three years ago. And dozens of activists have been imprisoned for attending demonstrations. International human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the Manama regime for its excessive use of force against peaceful protesters.

Egyptians have held a mass funeral for victims of the violence that broke out on the third anniversary of Egypt\'s 2011 revolution. The situation remains tense across the country, a day after deadly clashes pitting supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi against the security forces and rival demonstrators. The Health Ministry says nearly fifty people died in the clashes during demonstrations marking the anniversary of Egypt\'s 2011 revolution. Most of the victims are believed to be supporters of Morsi. Amnesty International has issued a report saying that Egypt has seen violence on an unprecedented scale since Morsi\'s ouster in a military coup in July. Meanwhile, Egypt\'s interim government announced on Sunday that it had decided to hold the presidential election before the parliamentary polls. The move is likely to intensify speculation over whether army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will be a candidate in the presidential election.
