[31 May 2012] Euro-crisis to deepen due to bad banking - English The EU's Economics Commissioner Olli Rehn says eurozone leaders must anchor their actions in more austerity if the eurozone is to avoid "disintegration" amid the economic crisis. Rehn believes that "default or disintegration" would likely cause much greater pain for Europe's citizens than further unpopular austerity and reforms, as it "would lead to terrible depression in Europe and around the world." His remarks come as EU leaders have been struggling to ease the Europe economic crisis and amid concerns over a Greek exit from the debt-stricken eurozone. [29 July 2012] West Bank under fire - Remember Palestine - English A number of NGOs including UNICEF and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights as well as Palestinian Al Haq and the Israeli Yesh Din, issued yet another statement on the continued rise in settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The statement which states there has been an astounding 150% increase in settler violence since 2009 comes just a few days after a lethal attack on a Palestinian who was repeatedly stabbed by settlers after just being shot by Israeli soldiers. A report from the Palestine Center published this year identifies three potential causes for settler violence; it\'s response to Israeli government actions; it\'s a product of demographics and security arrangements; it is a response to Palestinian violence. The report also states that while Israeli settler violence is not new, the extent and frequency with which it is perpetrated today is new.

The European Union\'s Justice Commissioner says time is ripe for a QUOTE strong and united stand on data protection against US surveillance operations. Viviane Reding called on European states to adopt a data protection law for facing the US as a strong and united entity. This comes amid new reports that the US has been spying on its European allies. Germany has summoned the US ambassador to Berlin over reports that Washington had monitored German Chancellor Angela Merkel\'s cell phone. Merkel herself has called the U-S president to demand immediate clarification. She\'s also set to discuss Washington\'s snooping in Europe with French President Francois Hollande during a two-day EU summit in Brussels. The White House says Obama has assured Merkel that her cell is not being tapped.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reports that around one thousand families have fled from a battle in central Syria to the Lebanese border town of Arsal. The UNHCR says the families were forced to walk more than 30 kilometers to reach safety. The refugees have reportedly fled from the strategic al-Qalamoun area in the north-east of Damascus. The Syrian army is fighting militants there to cut supply lines to insurgent-held areas near Damascus. Activists say fighting has intensified in the mountainous region. Lebanese officials say around 1-point-4 million Syrians have taken refuge in their country so far.

Discussing the status of Afghan refugees in Iran; The UN High commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, who is on a two-day official visit to Tehran, in a meeting with Iran\'s interior minister said that the best solution to the issue of Afghan refugees is to prepare the ground for their return to their homeland. Meanwhile, Iran\'s interior minister called on the international community to fulfill its commitments towards refugees especially the Afghans.

The opening of a United Nations conference in Switzerland on anti-racism was marred by chaotic scenes Monday as protests and a walkout by delegates disrupted a controversial address by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The presence of the Iranian leader at the conference had already prompted Israel to withdraw its ambassador from Switzerland, while several countries including the United States are also boycotting the gathering. Dozens of delegates walked out of the chamber as Ahmadinejad accused Israel and the West of making "an entire nation homeless under the pretext of Jewish suffering ... in order to establish a totally racist government." Video Watch delegates make their exit » He said Zionism, the Jewish national movement, "personifies racism," and accused Zionists of wielding economic and political resources to silence opponents. He also blasted the United States-led invasion of Afghanistan. Protesters in brightly colored wigs interrupted Ahmadinejad as he began to speak, shouting: "You're a racist!" in accented English. But some delegates cheered, while security officers dragged at least two protesters from the chamber. Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman called Ambassador Ilan Elgar home to protest a meeting between the Swiss president and Ahmadinejad, Israel's foreign ministry said in a statement. "The meeting of a president of a democratic country with a notorious Holocaust denier such as the Iranian president, who has openly declared his intention of wiping Israel off the map, is not in keeping with the values represented by Switzerland," the ministry said. Netanyahu's office had earlier said the diplomatic move was a response to the presence of Ahmadinejad at the conference. Ahmadinejad has said that the Holocaust is a myth, and Iran hosted a conference in 2006 questioning the Holocaust, in which about 6 million Jews were killed. The United States, among others, is refusing to send envoys to the Durban Review Conference. The U.N. high commissioner for human rights said Sunday that she regrets -- and is "shocked" by -- the United States' decision to boycott. "I am shocked and deeply disappointed by the United States' decision not to attend a conference that aims to combat racism, xenophobia, racial discrimination and other forms of intolerance worldwide," High Commissioner Navi Pillay said in a written statement. "A handful of states have permitted one or two issues to dominate their approach to this issue, allowing them to outweigh the concerns of numerous groups of people that suffer racism and similar forms of intolerance... These are truly global issues, and it is essential that they are discussed at a global level, however sensitive and difficult they may be," she said. The U.S. State Department said Washington's decision was based in part on a conference document that "singles out" Israel in its criticism and conflicts with the United States' "commitment to unfettered free speech." President Barack Obama noted Sunday that the United States had previously warned it would not attend the conference if the document was not sufficiently altered in advance. According to the State Department, the document contains language that "prejudges key issues that can only be resolved in negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians." The language reaffirms the Durban Declaration and Programme of Actions from the 2001 conference in Durban, South Africa, which the United States has said it won't support. Obama said the United States hopes to partner with other countries "to actually reduce discrimination around the globe, but this (conference) wasn't an opportunity to do it." Australia, Canada, Germany and Italy, among others, are also boycotting the conference. Poland announced Monday it too would pull out of the conference. Netanyahu on Monday praised the countries that refused to attend: "I congratulate the nations that boycotted the show of hate."

[29 April 2012] UNRWA; Empowering Palestinian Youth Refugees - Remember Palestine - English A two-day international conference on "Engaging Youth: Palestine Refugees in a Changing Middle East" convened by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), concluded on the 20th of April in Brussels with UNRWA Commissioner-General, Filippo Grandi, unveiling ten "Youth Commitments" on behalf of the UN Agency. The commitments also included enhanced vocational training and micro-finance opportunities, fundraising for scholarships, expanding its successful skills programme for young refugees first piloted in Syria, advocacy on rights of special concern to youth. The idea of the conference was to increase Youth participation, economically empowering refugee youth, building and investing in human capital, and youth confronting marginalisation. The edition of the show will focus on the perspectives of youth Palestinians and how the new generations of Palestinians refuges manage pending inherited issues as their right to return and how organizations like the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) can help to empower them.

[30 May 2012] 'NATO behind Houla massacre' - English The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has said that most of the civilian victims of last week's massacre in the Syrian town of Houla were executed. Over 100 civilians were killed in a massacre in the western town of Houla on May 25. Meanwhile, a number of Western governments have recalled their ambassadors and high-ranking diplomats from Syria in protest to the killing of at least 108 people. The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and that security forces have been given clear instructions not to harm civilians. However, the UN refugee agency has snubbed the idea of setting up refugee camps to accommodate the Rohingyas. "We will send them away if any third country would accept them," Sein added. "This is what we are thinking is the solution to the issue." The UN says decades of discrimination have left the Rohingyas stateless, with Myanmar implementing restrictions on their movement and withholding land rights, education and public services.

At least one person was killed and twelve others injured in an explosion that occurred near the entrance of Safari Park. The DIG East said the explosion was caused due to bomb planted near a KESC sub-station. According to the commissioner of Karachi Roshan Ali Sheikh, the blast was the result of a planted device. A bus hired for the Youm-e-Quds rally, seven vehicles and nearby buildings were damaged in the explosion. The injured have been shifted to the Jinnah hospital.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has announced that it plans to resettle 60,000 Somali refugees, The Head of the world refugee body visited the Somali capital Mogadishu to show solidarity with the Somali government as it awaits the commencement of the repatriation of close to a million refugees from several African and Arab countries.

The United Nations says one out of five people living in Lebanon are refugees who have fled the conflict in neighboring Syria. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced the number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon has surpassed the eight hundred and 48 thousand mark. The Office of the UNHCR also said about seven hundred and 93 thousand have registered as refugees. The Lebanese authorities say the exact number could be even higher since many of the Syrian refugees are unregistered and undocumented migrants. Lebanon has refused to set up official camps for refugees from Syria. Many live in hundreds of unofficial tent settlements on its northern and eastern peripheries. Lebanon currently hosts the highest number of refugees from Syria. More than a million other Syrians have fled to Jordan and Turkey.

As Lebanon is grappling with an influx of Syrian refugees, the latest UN figures highlights the extent of the crisis. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has said one out of five people living in Lebanon are refugees who have fled the conflict in neighboring Syria. Some 30 percent of the Refugees live in substandard shelters. Lebanon\\\'s government has refused to set up official camps for the refugees fearing a crisis similar to that of the Palestinian refugees 52 thousand of whom were living in Syria. Many of Syrian refugees are unregistered and undocumented migrants and live in hundreds of unofficial tent settlements on northern and eastern peripheries. The figures provided by the UNHCR do not include hundreds of thousands of refugees who are not registered. But estimates show that there could be over one million Syrian refugees in Lebanon living in tents like these. Some, 280,000 are children of school age, and over 70% very much dependent on any humanitarian aid they can get. The greatest suffering in the camps is seen in the eyes of the children. This boy was eager to go on television hoping that our presence would attract humanitarian aid. The women complain about how they\\\'re not getting enough help for their children: This man was a school teacher in Syria\\\'s Hama. Now he\\\'s trying to help create an educational center for children of school age, many of whom have not received any education for two years: Lebanon currently hosts the highest number of refugees from Syria. More than a million other Syrians have fled to Jordan and Turkey. The United Nations has warned that the number of Syrian refugees will almost double over the next year to top four million.
