Protests are still going on in Istanbul\\\'s Taksim square and other provinces throughout the country. Protesters are calling for the resignation of the Turkish Prime Minister Raccipp Tayipp Erdogan, They accuse him of being a dictator and believe he does whatever he pleases without any checks and balances or public approval. Sunday night, Turkey saw some of the worst clashes since the protests erupted, as police and demonstrators went head to head in Bashtakash area of Istanbul. Protesters were trying to barricade an office belonging to Erdogan. Police have used large pieces of cement to block off the streets leading to Taksim Square. But protesters are working together to tear down police barricades.

Two candidates are out and six are still in the race. Unofficial polls imply some are neck and neck; that\'s why so much time is being spent on provincial campaigns. The same polls also show that the number of undecided voters is fairly high, but a few of the people polled have said they won\'t vote at all.

Video footage has surfaced online showing radical Salafist Sheikh Ahmad al-Aseer beating up a Lebanese abductee with his rifle.
The hardline cleric, whose extremist group of Salafists had recently kidnapped Mohammad Abu Zahr in the Abra region of the city of Sidon in southern Lebanon, is shown with some of his companions hitting the man.
Aseer had previously denied having attacked Abu Zahr.
The radical Sheikh is on the run from the Lebanese military after his armed group launched a deadly attack on an army post last month, leading to the death of 20 soldiers and injuring a number of others in the ensuing confrontations.

Afghan president Hamid Karzai has given a thumbs up to extend the presence of US troops beyond 2014. However he has also said that the Loya Jirga or the assembly of elders must approve the security pact between Kabul and Washington. Many Afghan citizens want Washington to leave their country. The central issue for the assembly is the issue of immunity for American troops that will remain in the country after the withdrawal of its allies\' forces by the end of 2014. What will this do to Afghanistan? And why does the US want to stay in Afghanistan, when more and more Americans are dissatisfied with the deteriorating socio-economic conditions back home?

The Syrian army forces are pushing ahead with their mop-up operations in the country\'s northwest.
Syrian soldiers have secured the al-Dweireneh town, east of the al-Nayrab airport in Aleppo. This is the latest in a series of army advances across the country over the recent weeks. On Tuesday, army units regained full control of the Qara town in the strategic al-Qalamoun area in the countryside of the capital Damascus. They also freed a number of towns there. An Egyptian panel tasked with drawing up the new draft constitution has approved an article that forbids the formation of religious parties.
The document says any political party founded on a quote religious basis will be prohibited. The ban was in place during long-time dictator Hosni Mubarak\'s rule. The panel says 138 articles of the total 247 articles have been approved. If adopted in full, the charter will be put to a popular referendum early next year. Rights groups say the new charter strengthens the military. Muslim Brotherhood supporters accuse the military-backed government of having anti-democratic tendencies. They say the proposed amendments are contrary to the goals of the 2011 revolution that ended decades of dictatorship.

The spillover of the Syrian crisis has claimed more lives in the flashpoint northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.
Ten people, including a woman, have been killed in clashes between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over the weekend. At least 70 people have also been wounded. Our Beirut correspondent Ali Rizk sees the latest incidents as part of a larger picture. He says Saudi Arabia is losing its sphere of influence compared to regional players, and is therefore trying to regain its power by resorting to violence by proxy.

Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency have wrapped up what\'s been desrcibed as a productive meeting on Tehran\'s nuclear energy program in the Austrian capital. The two sides will hold a fresh round of talks in Tehran on January 21.
The latest talks follow a recent nuclear deal between Iran and the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany. Tehran also earlier agreed to provide the I-A-E-A access to formerly off-limit sites. Iran met its first obligation under the I-A-E-A agreement at the weekend, by allowing the UN nuclear agency inspectors to visit Arak\'s heavy-water facility.

Israeli forces handed 10 Palestinian families demolition orders this week in the village of Barta\'a al-Sharqiyeh in Jenin.
The orders handed to the villagers have now totaled 50, with each family given one months notice to appeal before their homes, shops and animal barracks are bulldozed.
