Millions of Shia Muslims from across the world have flocked to Iraq\'s holy city of Karbala to hold mourning ceremonies marking Arba\'een. Arba\'een marks the 40th day since the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, Prophet Mohammed\'s grandson and the third Shia imam. Security is tight in Karbala and other cities across Iraq. Authorities estimate that some 15 million people have braved the cold and deadly violence to attend Arba\'een ceremonies. Dozens of pilgrims have so far lost their lives in multiple terrorist attacks in recent days.

Shia Muslims trekked hundreds of kilometers from many parts of Nigeria to the headquarters of the Islamic movement of Nigeria in the northern city of Zaria to commemorate the Arba\'een. Those who could not walk were carried. The physically challenged used their wheelchairs. The Arba\'een commemorates 40th day since the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and seventy two of his loyal companions in Karbala around 14 centuries ago.

Millions of Shia Muslims in Iran mark Arba\\\'een ceremonies across the country. Iranians have marked one of the most important events on the Shia religious calendar, Arbaeen. This marks 40 days since the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam. Forty days is the usual length of mourning in many Islamic cultures, and the fortieth day is marked with a mourning ceremony. Imam Hussein is immortalized by Shias for choosing death instead of subjugation to a tyrant. His movement has come to symbolize resistance against tyranny and oppression. The movement of Imam Hussein is one of the central aspects of the Shia Muslim belief and still after hundreds of years Shia Muslims commemorate this day.
