[13 June 2012] Russia FM visits Iran - English Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in Tehran With less than a week to the scheduled comprehensive talks between Iran and the p5+1group, that includes also Russia, Russia's Foreign minister has made an official visit to Tehran to discuss issues ranging from bilateral ties to the Moscow talks and the developments in Syria.During his meeting with a number of Iranian officials including Secretary of Iran's Supreme National security council Saeed Jalili and his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi, in which both sides called for an increase in the volume of bilateral trade which currently stands at 3 billion dollars annually. Right after the meeting the two ministers held a joint press conference, both sides said they hold similar views regarding the situation in Syria. Meanwhile Iran's foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi referring to the upcoming talks between Iran and the p5+1 group due in Moscow noted that the results of the negotiations would be fruitful if they're based on cooperation. Lavrov for his part said that Moscow is to invite around 15 countries, including Iran, for an international meeting on Syria. He further noted that said the conference would call for the implementation of the plan by UN-Arab League joint envoy Kofi Annan. Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan for Syria launched in February 2012 is considered as the most serious international attempt to resolve the Syrian unrest. Lavrov's official visit to Tehran comes only days after the Presidents of Iran and Russia met on the sideline of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China. [19 May 2012] 'UN observers in Syria cannot be trusted - News Analysis - English Two failed US-backed Security Council resolutions vetoed by Russia and China, promised reforms by Damascus, a new constitution, Kofi Annan's 6-point peace plan followed by a fragile cease-fire and a flock of UN observers and most recently multi party parliamentary elections, all of those have been decisive factors over the past year or so in Syria. But is the Syrian solution gradually turning into the Syrian conundrum as the U-S and its Arab allies are arming groups fighting the government with significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks?

Damascus says it holds "armed groups" responsible for the recent deadly clashes in the western town of Houla that killed 108 people, including at least 49 children. The fighting between Syrian forces and armed groups in Houla comes despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 12. The UK foreign secretary said there could be "chaos and civil war" if the peace plan is not implemented. [05 June 2012] Clashes continue in Northern Lebanon - English A day of mourning in the Northern Lebanese city of Tripoli following clashes described as the deadliest in decades. 15 people killed and tens wounded after rival pro and anti Syrian Lebanese groups faced off for the second time in less than a month. Despite a cautious calm following two days of warfare, life was far from normal in the neighborhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab -Al-Tabaneh. Most shops remain closed and tensions remain high between the Allawite pro-Syrian and Sunni anti-Syrian neighborhoods. With each side blaming the other for instigating the violence, sectarianism has reached its peak and hence the worse is probably yet to come.

[03 July 2012] Saudi Arabia invested in Syria crisis - English UN human rights chief Navi Pillay says the flow of arms into Syria is "fueling the violence" in the Arab country, calling for an end to the militarization of the ongoing conflict. Pillay did not specify where the arms are coming from, but UN diplomats believe that Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been supplying weapons to the armed Syrian rebels. The UN official claimed that the situation in Syria is "a non-international internal armed conflict," the legal term for a civil war, saying "there is a risk of escalation." While the West and the Syrian opposition say the government is responsible for the killings, Damascus blames "outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups" for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad. [24 July 2012] US Israel seek to launch more wars in Mideast - English Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Tel Aviv will "have to act" to prevent a possible transfer of chemical weapons from Syria to Lebanon. In an interview on "Fox News Sunday," Netanyahu said the need for an intervention may arise in case of the collapse of the Syrian government. "So I think that this is something we'll have to act to stop if the need arises. And the need might arise if there's a regime collapse," the Israeli premier said. He made the comments a few days after Israeli Minister of Military Affairs Ehud Barak made similar remarks. Barak said that "the moment (Syrian President Bashar al-Assad) starts to fall we will conduct intelligence monitoring and will liaise with other agencies." "Israel cannot accept a situation where advanced weapons systems are transferred from Syria to Lebanon," he said. This is while Israel has intensified its military buildup in the occupied Golan Heights near the Syrian border.
