Iran, the US, and the European Union have ended their negotiations to hammer out a draft deal on Iran\'s nuclear energy program on Friday. The talks now stretch into the third day on Saturday.
Iran\'s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has described the trilateral discussions as productive. Araqchi, however, added that lots of work still remains to do. American sources also said progress has been made, but there\'s more work to do. The comments come after five hours of intense negotiations between Iran\'s Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif, his U-S counterpart John Kerry, and EU foreign policy Chief Catherine Ashton. The three were working on a draft agreement which many say could be a breakthrough in Iran\'s nuclear energy case. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and a Chinese deputy foreign minister are also on their way to Geneva to join the negotiations.

China has reported an unexpected fall in its exports, putting pressure on the government as it pushes through a re-balancing of the economy.
According to the General Administration of Customs, exports fell 3.1 percent in June from a year earlier. The weak overseas demand for Chinese goods came as a surprise to analysts, many of whom had predicted an increase of around 4 percent. Imports over the same period fell by 0.7 percent, pointing to subdued domestic demand. The overall assessment was downbeat.

US Congress is full of “anti-China fanatics” so it is not surprising that a bipartisan group of lawmakers have called on the Pentagon to compile and release an updated list of companies with ties to the Chinese military, operating in the United States, says American political analyst Mike Billington.

China has condemned Japan for criticizing its new air identification defense zone amid an escalating war of words between the two neighbors.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said the flight zone over a group of disputed islands in the East China Sea violates the freedom of aviation over the high seas and should be canceled. But China has once again defended the move-- saying Abe is using the situation to QUOTE maliciously slander Beijing. The Chinese Foreign Ministry says the establishment of the zone is in line with international laws and does not affect aviation freedom. Tensions have been running high between the two Asian powerhouses in the past year over the Japanese-controlled archipelago. Both countries have scrambled jets and carried out patrols in the area.

Imagine if you\\\'re not connected to the internet, yet your computer is still vulnerable in being spied on: That is the latest leak by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden: that the US National Security Agency (NSA) used secret technology to spy on computers that were not even connected to the internet. In this edition of the debate, we\\\'ll discuss how this takes spying on ordinary citizens to a whole new level, even though NSA claims targets included the Chinese and Russian military as well as drug cartels. We\\\'ll also further disclose how this violates privacy laws, not to mention the US constitution.

In Beijing, the Chinese government has called for a renewed effort to reach a long-term solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.
With agreement in Vienna a real possibility, Chinese policymakers are busy thinking about what that might mean. Western politicians say the economic damage inflicted by the sanctions they have imposed has forced Iran to the negotiating table. Many Chinese analysts, however, say the main impetus towards a deal could now be coming from America. The US, Chinese experts say, needs better relations with Iran to wind down its commitments in southwest Asia.

Iran\'s President Hassan Rouhani has called on China to stand against what he described as the excessive demands of certain countries in nuclear talks with Tehran.
President Rouhani told his Chinese counterpart over the phone that China is an important country with significant responsibilities over international issues. He said Tehran expects Beijing to play a stronger role in the efforts to solve the dispute over Iran\'s nuclear program. Rouhani says Tehran is determined to settle the issue within the frameworks of international law. Shi Jinping, for his part, praised what he described as smart steps by Iran over its nuclear program as well as its foreign policy agenda. He says a peaceful resolution of the case will only happen when the nuclear talks are based on mutual respect and the principle of equality.

[20 Dec 2013] Comment - China raps US over China Sea meddling - English
China has warned the United States to be cautious in its words and actions with regard to territorial disputes involving China and its neighbors....
China has warned the United States to be cautious in its words and actions with regard to territorial disputes involving China and its neighbors.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry warning comes amid a diplomatic wrangle over Beijing\\\'s newly announced air defense zone in the East China Sea.
Before this, Washington had warned Beijing against imposing an air defense zone over both the South China Sea and East China Sea.
US State Secretary John Kerry said recently that Washington would help its regional allies in protecting their territorial waters.
China and its neighbors lay similar claims to parts of the strategic and resource-rich seas.
The development comes days after Chinese fighter jets chased the US and Japanese military aircraft inside China\\\'s newly declared Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea.
Chinese defense authorities say they have sent more fighter jets to the zone. The Chinese air force described the mission as a defensive measure in line with international law.
China says foreign aircraft passing through the airspace, including passenger planes, will have to identify themselves to Chinese authorities. The zone includes the skies over islands at the heart of a territorial dispute between Japan and China.
China is also locked in territorial rows with the Philippines over wide swathes of the South China Sea and has said it might set up a similar zone there. Senior Chinese officials have repeatedly called on Washington not to take sides over the issue.

India is expanding its fighting capability against China. 50,000 additional troops will be deployed on the Chinese border. They will be specially trained and equipped for mountain warfare. All of the Indo-China border falls in the high Himalayas.
The two countries have a longstanding border dispute. It led to a bloody battle between them in 1962. India accuses China of occupying 38,000 square kilometers of its territory in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir, while the government in Beijing lays claim to 90,000 square kilometers of land in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeast India.
