[01 July 2012] Barclays bank fined 290mn pounds over financial scandal - English
Barclays bank was hit with 290 million pounds in fines for a serious widespread role in trying to manipulate interest rates and the cost of borrowing. Barclays chairman Marcus Agius has resigned over the scandal and is scheduled to appear before lawmakers on the Treasury Committee on Thursday to answer their questions. In an interview to mark the fifth anniversary of Tony Blair's resignation as the British Prime Minister, he said that he would be willing to do it all again and that he had learned much in the last five years to make him a better premiere.
However, Blair has never apologized and will never face a trial for crimes he committed in Iraq. He even claims that things in Iraq are getting better and the country's economy is growing. "Some of us will never forget the hundreds of thousands of children who died under sanctions at his [Blair] hands, and the countless more who perished thereafter, again at his hands, under shot and shell," said George Galloway.

If you ask most people here in Britain, they will say its politicians like Tony Blair who are solely to blame for what went wrong in Iraq and Afghanistan. But a just released report by conservative think tank Chatham House says military officers, civil servants - even the media are just as responsible for what they call an \"incoherent, inconsistent, and opaque\" strategy.

[31 May 2012] Leveson inquiry: British media & political class - Comment - English
Tony Blair arrived at the Royal Courts of Justice with a wave, but there were protests going on outside. Tony Blair's testimony at the Leveson inquiry was as measured and considered as ever. David Lawley-Wakelin, a documentary film-maker, who managed to get past security-coded doors to access the judges' corridor leading to courtroom 73 on May 28, pointed to the 59-year-old ex-Labour leader and shouted, "This man is a war criminal."
"This man should be arrested for war crimes. JP Morgan paid (Mr. Blair) off for the Iraq war. Three months after he invaded Iraq they held up the Iraq bank for $20 billion (£13bn)," said Lawley-Wakelin. "He was then paid $6 million (£4m) every year and still is from JP Morgan six months after he left office."

After 9/11, many Muslims in the US and Britain experienced an upsurge of suspicion and hostility from people around them. At the same time, paradoxically perhaps, the number of white converts to Islam began to rise. In Britain, their number has doubled in the last ten years -- and nearly two-thirds of the newcomers are women. In this programme, Miriam O\'Reilly meets women who have chosen to embrace Islam for very different reasons -- among them Lauren Booth, sister-in-law to Britain\'s former Prime Minister, Tony Blair; and Myriam Francois Cerrah, a successful child actress who appeared in \"Sense and Sensibility\" alongside Emma Thompson and gave up her dreams of Hollywood when she found Islam. We hear what drew them to a faith that exposed them to negative reactions after 9/11, and - in the eyes of their non-Muslim sisters -- has forced them to give up much of their personal freedom.
