[01 June 2012] Complications in Egypt's presidential election - Middle East Today - English
In Egypt there is growing fear among many that the unexpected results of the first round of presidential election could lead to an even more complicated situation in the run-off between Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi and former Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq.
There are also reports of money being pumped into the election process while the revolutionaries blame the military council for having purposefully disqualified significant revolutionary figures from the presidential race. In this edition of the show we discuss the complications in Egypt's presidential election with our expert guests.

Political turmoil in Egypt. The country\'s constituent assembly has approved a new draft constitution. The Muslim Brotherhood has already rejected the charter.
The Brotherhood has slammed interim authorities, saying they\'re distorting Egypt\'s legitimate constitution which was adopted during Mohammed Morsi\'s presidency. The final draft was approved by a 50-member constituent assembly and will now be handed to the military-backed interim president. Adly Mansour is expected to set a date for a referendum on the charter. The draft calls for elections, parliamentary or presidential, within 90 days after the adoption of the constitution. If approved, the new constitution will strengthen the army\'s hand. It will also forbid the formation of parties based on religious grounds.

[03 Aug 2012] How can Muslims in West help Islamic Awakening - English
After too much expectation and uncertainty, finally the Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi won the election with 51.7 percent of the votes against Ahmed Shafiq. This came after a close competition in the second round, while some rumours were suggesting that the old regimes remnant Ahmed Shafiq might win. Thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters filled the streets and squares in Cairo and other cities to celebrate this victory, a turning point in Egypt's history to move from dictatorship to.
While Morsi succeeds Hosni Mubarak, who was overthrown 16 months ago after a popular uprising, the military council has this month curbed the powers of the presidency. This means that the head of state will have to work closely with the army on a planned democratic constitution. This week's Islam and Life asks: Egypt changes: How can Muslims in the west help the Islamic Awakening?

Some say it\'s an important milestone pushing Egypt towards a new political era but others, notably among them the Muslim Brotherhood say the new draft constitution to be put to a referendum within months, is a step backwards especially since the new draft is seen as giving sweeping powers to the military and banning political parties based on religions. Is Egypt headed to a new era of democracy or further rallies and violent crackdowns?

Tensions in Egypt are running high ahead of a new court appearance by ousted president Mohamed Morsi. The anti-coup alliance says at least 19 pro-Morsi protesters have been killed and many others injured in renewed violence.
The casualties have been reported from Cairo, Alexandria, Suez, Ismailia, and Fayoum. The clashes broke out when security forces fired tear gas, birdshot and live gunfire to disperse protesters. Demonstrators were out joining rallies after Friday prayers to demand an end to military rule and voice opposition to the new constitution. Similar violence has been reported from Suez, Assiut and northern Sinai. Security forces rounded up a large number of protesters across the country. Egypt has been tense ahead of Morsi\\\'s court and an upcoming referendum on a new constitution. Muslim Brotherhood has pledged to boycott the referendum slated to be held later this month.

[04 June 2012] 'Voters seek Islamic system in Egypt' - English
Egyptians vented their anger at presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq who urged them to accept the life sentence issued for Mubarak and his officers. Security sources say dozens of angry protesters attacked Shafiq's campaign headquarters in two provincial towns, one of which in Fayyoum south of the capital Cairo and the other one in Hurghada on the Red Sea. Shafiq's campaign headquarters in Cairo had already been attacked last Monday. Besides supporting Mubarak's verdict, Shafiq has lashed out at his Muslim Brotherhood rival.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Waleed el-Haddad, spokesperson of Freedom and Justice Party.

A key trial has been suspended right after its opening. An Egyptian judge has ordered the adjournment of the trial of the first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi.
The trial of Morsi and his co-defendants has been scheduled for January 8. The decision came after the defendants began chanting slogans against the army, saying that they didn\'t recognize the authority of the court. Morsi is reported to have said that he is the legitimate president of Egypt, calling on the court \'to end this farce\'. Mohamed Morsi, and 14 Brotherhood members are accused of inciting violence which left 10 protesters dead. The Muslim Brotherhood has called the charges fabricated. Security is currently tight in Egypt with some 20,000 policemen deployed to the streets. Brotherhood\'s supporters are demonstrating in several cities and outside the venue of the trial. Reports say dozens of protesters have already been arrested.

A key trial suspended just minutes after opening. An Egyptian judge has suspended the trial of the country\'s first democratically-elected president, Moahmed Morsi.
The suspension reportedly came after Morsi and 14 other defendants began shouting that they didn\'t recognize the authority of the court. Mohamed Morsi, three of his aides and 11 Muslim Brotherhood members are standing trial for allegedly inciting violence which left 10 protesters dead in December. The Muslim Brotherhood has called the charges fabricated, urging its supporters to pour into the streets in protest. Security is currently tight in Egypt with some 20-thousand policemen deployed to the streets. Brotherhood\'s supporters are demonstrating in several cities and outside the venue of the trial. Reports say at least 20 pro-Morsi protesters have been arrested during clashes in the port city of Alexandria.
