[21 June 2012] Syria Scenario - News Analysis - English A recent report from the mainstream daily newspaper New York Times has gone into detail as to how the CIA is facilitating arms and other assistance to armed groups in Syria, and it's doing it on Turkish soil, near the borders with Syria. Damascus has always been very vocal that Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia were assisting, funding and arming armed groups operating on the Syrian soil.

The crisis in Syria has entered a new phase as the army takes control of Jisr al-Shughour. The city has recently been the scene of violent confrontations between the army and armed groups.

[07 Aug 2012] West plans to take over Middle East nations Analyst - English Syrian security forces have clashed with foreign-sponsored insurgents in several neighborhoods in the country's largest city of Aleppo as part of their efforts to clear the city of the armed groups. The Syrian government forces entered the al-Sakhour area inside Aleppo and arrested between 200 and 250 insurgents, 70 of whom are believed to be foreigners. Meanwhile, the Syrian armed gangs attacked a traffic police station in central Aleppo on Tuesday and opened fire on the Syrian police forces, leading to casualties. The foreign-backed insurgents receive arms and support from several Western and regional states, including Saudi Arabia. Many people, including security forces, have been killed in the unrest in Syria that began in March 2011. This is while the United Nations has pulled its observers out of Aleppo due to, what it called, the worsening situation in the city. Almost 20 UN observers returned to the mission's headquarters in Damascus. Damascus says, "outlaws, saboteurs, and insurgents" are behind the unrest in the country, while the opposition accuses the security forces of killing the protesters. The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed insurgents are foreign nationals. The UN General Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution on nuclear disarmament which includes proposals by the Iranian president. The UN called on nuclear-armed states to make more efforts to reduce and ultimately eliminate all types of atomic weapons. Last month, the world body\'s Disarmament Commission voted on a draft resolution proposed by the Non-Aligned Movement, which included President Hassan Rouhani\'s suggestions. During the last UN General Assembly meetings, the Iranian president laid down his proposals on nuclear disarmament, which were welcomed by many countries. An urgent formation of a convention on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons; holding a high-level international conference on nuclear disarmament no later than 20-18; and declaring September 26 as the International Day for the total elimination of nukes were among Rouhani\'s suggestions in that draft.

Clashes have erupted between pro and anti Assad groups in northern Lebanon and news of a group of Lebanese pilgrims abducted by anti-government armed groups in Syria. Is Syrian violence spreading into the neighboring country and is the a deliberate attempt to do just that?

Damascus says it holds "armed groups" responsible for the recent deadly clashes in the western town of Houla that killed 108 people, including at least 49 children. The fighting between Syrian forces and armed groups in Houla comes despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 12. The UK foreign secretary said there could be "chaos and civil war" if the peace plan is not implemented. Press TV has conducted an interview with Mimi al-Laham, Syrian activist from Dubai, to further discuss the issue.

The Syria peace talks or the Geneva TWO conference remains in doubt amid wrangling between foreign-backed opposition groups. Arab League Chief Nabil al-Arabi has announced that the Geneva conference will be held on November 23. But the UN-Arab league envoy has refused to announce a date. Lakhdar Brahimi-- who\'s on a tour of the Middle East to drum up support for the initiative-- says the talks can only be held if a credible opposition takes part in it. The remarks were in reference to a growing rift among foreign-backed opposition factions. The so-called Syrian National Coalition says a decision whether to attend the talks would be taken in the coming days. But, it remains unclear whether it can enforce any agreement as dozens of militant groups have recently rejected the umbrella group as their representative.

[05 June 2012] West follows Israeli agenda in Syria: Glenn - English The Syrian opposition claims to have created a new armed front to unite forces along the Turkish border that have taken up arms against Damascus. A member of Syrian rebels told the press about their existence in the Turkish city of Istanbul. The front says it's an umbrella group of some 12-thousand registered members ready to fight the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Meanwhile, armed gangs say they killed at least 80 security forces over the weekend. Russia and China continue to support a political solution to the problem while the UN beef's up talk of a potential civil war in the country and US Susan Rice talks of illegal military intervention into Syria without US Congressional or UN approval.
