Syrian government forces deal a major blow to foreign-backed insurgents in the Ghouta region near Damascus.
Army forces killed over 175 militants in an ambush near the capital city. Most of the fatalities are of Saudi, Qatari and Chechen origins. Syrian army sources say most of them were from the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front. Government forces have the upper hand in the battle against militants across the country.

Takfiri groups fighting the Syrian government forces have abducted more than 50 Kurds, among them children in the past three days.
The kidnapping took place in the towns of Minbej and Jarablus in the northern province of Aleppo. This comes weeks after Kurdish fighters pushed out the Takfiri groups from the region. There has been a fierce battle between the two sides over the control of the region in the past three months. In July, the militants kidnapped some 200 Kurdish civilians in the town of Tal Aran and Tal Hassel in Aleppo. Only a few of the hostages have been released since then.

Syrian armed forces continue making advances in Aleppo. The army has managed to retake a number of buildings in the district of Layramoun in the city\\\'s north.
The area is considered the northern gateway into Aleppo. The army\\\'s advances stop foreign-backed militants from smuggling weapons into Aleppo from the northern part of the city. The achievement is the latest in a series of military operations against insurgents who receive military aid from their supporters in Western countries and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Syria\'s grand Mufti says Turkey is behind the abduction of two Orthodox bishops of the city of Aleppo.
Sheikh Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun says the two bishops are alive and being held in Turkey. He says Chechen militants colluded with Turkish special services to kidnap them. Metropolitan Paul of Aleppo and Metropolitan Gregory of the Siro-Jacobite Church were abducted near the Turkish border in April. Rumors circulated that both of them were killed, however the rumors were later denied. The metropolitans were said to be working on resolving humanitarian problems in the northern village of Kafr Dael when they were abducted. The Syrian cleric believes their abduction could be linked to Ankara\'s requests for the transfer of the seat of the Antioch patriarchate from Syria to Turkey.

Syrian government forces have seized a large cache of drugs from foreign-backed insurgents in Idlib province.
Syrian troops found the drugs in a warehouse in Idlib countryside. Several men were also arrested at the warehouse. The militants have been receiving funds and other supports from their regional backers, particularly Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Reports say Riyadh and Doha give them millions of dollars each month, and also buy them weapons from black markets around the world.

The Syrian army forces are pushing ahead with their mop-up operations in the country\'s northwest.
Syrian soldiers have secured the al-Dweireneh town, east of the al-Nayrab airport in Aleppo. This is the latest in a series of army advances across the country over the recent weeks. On Tuesday, army units regained full control of the Qara town in the strategic al-Qalamoun area in the countryside of the capital Damascus. They also freed a number of towns there. The Qalamoun region is used by militants to cross into Syria from Lebanon.

Syrian army victories against foreign-backed militants have become a fact nearly on a daily basis, especially in Damascus and its suburbs. Press TV team accompanied Syrian army units in parts of al-Qaboun area that have been cleared of the foreign-backed militants. The Army regained control over the main bus station in al-Qaboun where Syrians used to head to any other Syrian city. However, armed men, who occupied it for nearly two months, destroyed it completely. Syrian army units have managed to completely secure the 1.5 kilometer industrial zone in al-Qaboun area which links Barzeh, al-Qaboun and Jobar together. Army personnel underlined the strategic importance of the secured area.

Press TV sources say the insurgents were trying to infiltrate into Syrian territory from Lebanon. But the Syrian army chased them, killing a dozen and injuring many others.
Syrian troops have on many occasions blocked such attempts by the foreign-backed insurgents over the past months. Syria has been rocked by deadly unrest since March 20-11. Damascus says armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.

A National Syrian forum has been held in Damascus. It was attended by pro-government and political opposition bodies.
Points of view varied on various issues but when it came to Geneva 2 conference, there was consensus that only Syrians should decide their future. Internal opposition parties also said they were not even invited to the international gathering slated for January 22. The Syrian National Coordination Body for Democratic Change says it has not received an invitation to attend the Geneva 2 conference either.
