Syrian army units in a major push against insurgents across the country. Troops have carried out large-scale operations in several towns and cities.
The mop-up operations covered vast areas in the Idlib and Aleppo countryside and the cities of Dara\'a, Homs and Dayr al-zawr. The Syrian army says scores of foreign-backed militants including Saudi and Tunisian nationals were killed during the offensives. It also adds that a large number of heavy weapons were seized from militant hideouts. Meanwhile, mortar attacks have left over a dozen civilians injured in residential areas in Damascus. The government has blamed the insurgents for the mortar shells.

Fresh clashes between Egyptian students supporting and opposing the Muslim Brotherhood movement. At least twenty people are injured.
The clashes took place in Zaga-zig University in the northern province of al-Sharqia. Pro-Muslim Brotherhood protesters were calling for the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. Such protests have gained momentum in Egypt after students on Cairo\'s al-Azhar University campus staged pro-Morsi rallies for several days starting late last week. Similar protests were held in Alexandria University on Wednesday.

In Bahrain, protesters have rallied after the leader of the country\'s main opposition group was summoned by police for questioning.
The demonstrators marched in the capital Manama as well as the town of Adliyah and Muqabah. Regime forces used tear gas against protesters in Moqabeh. Protesters expressed solidarity with al-Wefaq leader Sheikh Ali Salman and pledged to continue their protests. Al-Wefaq has said the summoning is part of the regime\'s blackmail and revenge campaign against the peaceful opposition. Manama is under fire for a heavy-handed crackdown on dissent.

Turkish police have used water cannons and smoke grenades against Kurdish protesters angry at Ankara\'s plans to erect a wall near the border with Syria.
The clashes took place in the south-eastern Kurdish town of Jizre. Kurdish protesters say the wall divides them from family members on the Syrian side of the border. Turkey began the construction of the wall last month in Nusaybin, a border district north of the Syrian town of Qamishli. Ankara says it\'s concerned with the spillover of violence from northern Syria. However, the Turkish government is a staunch supporter of insurgents in Syria providing them with arms, training and shelter.

Moroccan police clash with protesters in the Western Sahara who were demonstrating against the planned renewal of an EU fishing accord.
The protesters, most of them women, carried signs reading stop taking our resources. Police attacked protesters using batons, beating and injuring many of them. Many of the injured were women and children. No arrests have been reported. The European Parliament is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a new four-year fishing agreement with Morocco that would allow more than 120 EU fishing boats to use the waters of Morocco and the Western Sahara. Western Sahara is a disputed territory in North Africa. Most of the territory has been controlled by Morocco since 1991.

Authorities had deployed over 2,000 policemen across central Rome but the much feared demonstration organized by the Pitchfork Movement to protest against what its activists call a EU-imposed austerity regime drew 4,000 protesters only in People Square.
Originally made up by farmers and truckers, the Pitchfork Movement has grown into a network that includes disgruntled people from different sectors of society. However the movement has lately become fragmented as a result of the infiltration of political groups. The anti-austerity protest was also joined by neo-Fascist group CasaPound and extreme-right-wing movement Forza Nuova. Casapound\'s vice-president was arrested on Saturday for stealing the European Union flag hung outside the Commission\'s representation office in Rome. Pitchfork movement leaders have threatened new actions in the coming days.

Nuri al-Maliki says the armed forces will turn over the control of the cities in the province to local police. The operation aimed at closing the protest camp in Ramadi led to clashes between security forces and gunmen. One Iraqi soldier and three pro-al-Qaeda militants were killed, while three other gunmen were wounded during Tuesday\\\'s clashes. Earlier 44 lawmakers announced their resignation, demanding the withdrawal of the army. Sunni Muslim protesters have been campaigning against the government since last December.

In Bahrain, regime forces have once again used force against protesters.
Regime forces fired tear gas and birdshot at a funeral procession for a young Bahraini protester, identified as Fadhil Abbas Muslim. He was shot earlier this month. Scores of people have been killed and many more injured since a popular uprising against the rule of the Al Khalifah family broke out in the Arab kingdom about three years ago. And dozens of activists have been imprisoned for attending demonstrations. International human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the Manama regime for its excessive use of force against peaceful protesters.
