The human cost of war is rapidly rising now here in Afghanistan. It has been greatly felt by foreign forces in May as it became the deadliest month for them this year. 26 foreign troops have lost their lives here since the start of May. They are deeply worried now about their growing fatalities. This one was the worst single attack on US forces this month. It happened on May 16th. American forces were heading to their base when a bomber detonated his explosives near their convoy. 12 people were killed---including 6 Americans. Critics now fear the death toll will rise in the months to come.

On the 15th of May of every year, Palestinians and the whole world remember how it all started. How the Israelis' ethnic cleansing of a people and the destruction of a society - the Nakba - was met with global indifference. Many factors made it so, but among them was a Zionist propaganda machine that illustrated the crime committed in Palestine in 1948 as a war of independence against aggressive Arabs and Palestinians.
It is true that the Palestinians and the rest of the Arab people resisted the establishment of a racist regime in Palestine. And they still do. It is only normal. If anyone comprehends the extent of the injustice that has been committed against the Palestinian people, they would not even ask why they are so determined in their pursuit of justice. And if anyone knows the history of the Palestinian struggle, they would realize that this people will continue to resist in every form until they see the justice they have so longed for restored.
On 15 May 2011, the world is invited to express its understanding, solidarity and support to a people that has resisted... and continues to do so, for Justice in Palestine.

Tehran Times Culture Desk
TEHRAN - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei paid a visit to the 24th Tehran International Book Fair on Wednesday.
Ayatollah Khamenei visited several pavilions and held talks with officials, publishers, and organizers of the fair. Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Hosseini and the director of the fair, Bahman Dorri, accompanied the Leader, the Supreme Leader’s official website reported on Wednesday.
Books are irreplaceable, and the number of books published in Iran has risen over the past few years, but even more books need to be published, the Leader said.
Writers have also made diligent efforts but need to develop further, he stated.
National development is not possible if the book industry does not develop, he said, adding that the Culture Ministry should focus on the publication of books.
Publishers also had the opportunity to talk about their problems.
Over 2300 Iranian and 1600 foreign publishers from 67 countries are displaying their products at the fair.
The book fair is being held at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla and runs until May 14.

[20 May 2012] 64th anniversary of Nakba Day - Remember Palestine - English
15th of May will see Palestinians commemorate the 64th anniversary of Nakba Day; where over 750,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed and 400 Palestinian villages destroyed to form the illegal State of Israel. The same day where Palestinians will be mourning their dead, Israeli's will celebrate their Independence Day- the formation of occupied territories that were created by force and aggression to form a land with Jewish majority. Sixty-four years have passed however; Palestine is still under the illegitimate occupation of the Israelis and their supporters- Palestinians are still faced with Zionist hostilities, daily torment and anguish. The Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe) isn't over - for the Palestinians the ethnic cleansing never ended. The refugees are still barred from their homeland; Palestinians are being forced from their land to make way for Israeli settlements, and the Israeli administration have even stated that they don't want Palestinians to exceed 30% of the population of Jerusalem.

[21 May 2012] Second round of Iran - P5+1 talks in Baghdad - News Analysis - English
Iran may be working on a secret nuclear weapons program, some western countries claim. We are making peaceful use of nuclear energy as a committed member of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran insists. Since 20 years ago, Israel and the US have been talking about an imminent Iranian nuclear weapon. This, while the US National Intelligence Estimates since 2007 do not give credence to the allegations American leaders are making against Tehran.

[26 May 2012] Strategic partnership or Sovereignty Setback - News Analysis - English
A strategic partnership that would provide a framework for Afghanistan's future relationship with the US: Signed by presidents of the US and Afghanistan, and just ratified in the Afghan parliament: Even the name, however, sets the framework for US presence in Afghanistan: Enduring Strategic Partnership Agreement, which, when broken down, would ensure presence of American forces in the country though 2014 and even beyond. In this news analysis, we will look at why a US troop withdrawal and handover to Afghan forces may be just cosmetic, and why facts on the ground indicate a much longer US presence in that country, such as their numerous military bases.

[30 May 2012] 'NATO behind Houla massacre' - English
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has said that most of the civilian victims of last week's massacre in the Syrian town of Houla were executed. Over 100 civilians were killed in a massacre in the western town of Houla on May 25. Meanwhile, a number of Western governments have recalled their ambassadors and high-ranking diplomats from Syria in protest to the killing of at least 108 people. The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and that security forces have been given clear instructions not to harm civilians.

In May 2012, Obama and Karzai signed a security pact that authorized the presence of US troops for a period of 10 years after 2014, which was the original date agreed earlier for the departure of all foreign combat troops from Afghanistan.
Washington is also after signing a security deal with Kabul that will give foreign forces in Afghanistan immunity from prosecution among other terms. Meanwhile, on May 9 this year, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Washington had demanded to keep several military bases across Afghanistan.
The pretext of the US and its allies for their presence in Afghanistan is to establish security in the region. But now after more than a decade of US invasion, Afghans still say the foreign presence has led to more insecurity in the region.
