[06 Aug 2012] Panetta raises threat of military attack on Iran Galloway - English US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has raised the threat of a military attack on Iran regarding its nuclear energy program in an effort to reassure what they call Israel during a trip to Tel Aviv. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems to dismiss the tough talk though, saying American statements of solidarity with Israel and hints at military attacks are not working. Iran however has denied the Western accusations that Tehran is seeking a military objective in its nuclear energy program. According to a Fatwa from the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei Iran is prohibited to follow such an objective. Russian President Vladimir Putin was in London on Thursday to discuss the Syrian issue with David Cameron. So far, Russia and China have opposed any kind of UN resolution that could be seen as supporting Libyan-style Western military intervention. "Britain has retaliated in part by blocking a Russian arm shipment to Syria but the weaponry keeps getting through at least to those favored by the West," said George Galloway.

An Al-Qaeda-linked group has issued a threat to Hezbollah, saying it would continue its attacks against the Lebanese resistance movement. In a statement posted on the Internet, the group, known as the Al-Nusra Front in Lebanon, says -- Hezbollah and its bases are legitimate targets. The statement comes just three days after the group claimed responsibility for a car bombing in Beirut\'s southern suburbs that killed four people. That was the sixth in a string of terrorist attacks in Lebanon in recent months. Another al-Qaeda-linked outfit, the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, carried out a twin bombing in front of the Iranian Embassy in Beirut in November. The attacks claimed the lives of 23 people -- including an Iranian diplomat.

The secretary of the International Conference on Global Alliance against Terrorism for a Just Peace (GAATJP) warns of adverse consequences of spreading terrorism, insisting on the serious threat it poses to the world. “Despite all the progress, human life is exposed to the threats of complicating terrorism and war which have influence on various aspects,” Davoud Ameri said Saturday. He underscored the importance of exchanging information among the elite and public opinion as the way to resolve the issue of terrorism, IRNA reported. “Fight against terrorism will bear fruit only through respecting religions, culture and destiny of human beings,” the GAATJP secretary pointed out. Ameri conveyed the message of peace and friendship of the Iranian nation to the world and expressed hope that the conference would draw a new plan for fighting terrorism. The two-day International Conference on Global Alliance against Terrorism for a Just Peace kicked off in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Saturday with over 100 foreign and 300 local experts attending the summit. Participants engage mainly in exchanging views on ways to uproot terrorism. The theoretical principles of terrorism, the typology of terrorism, coordination of attempts to fight terror, policies adopted by different governments to combat terrorism, real objectives of combating terrorism, as well as terrorist groups, cultural terrorism, cyber-terrorism, media terrorism and the role of media in fighting terror are among main topics on the agenda of the event. Press TV: The US is supposed to withdraw from Iraq by the year's end. And with Obama saying just days ago in a press conference with Iraqi PM Nuri al-Maliki, the US troops will be leaving Iraq with heads held high. What legacy will the US leave behind in Iraq? Wasfi: Well, it's nothing to be proud of. There's a legacy of the wholesale slaughter of over a million people, the making of a massive refugee crisis - the largest since the Palestinian refugee crisis began - the destruction of the Iraqi health care system, the destruction of the Iraqi education system, the destruction of Iraq's infrastructure. In terms of security in Iraq, the most dangerous forces in the world today are the United States military and the Israeli occupation forces. Those are the greatest threats to global security. So while it's true that Iraq is a dangerous place, it is because of the US military stay and its illegal occupation, not in spite of it. Press TV: If the US leaves Iraq - and I say IF, because there might be the possibility to extend the deadline at the 11th hour - how capable do you think Iraq would be in taking care of itself? Wasfi: Iraq is the cradle of civilization. There's no question that though it will take decades to overcome the destruction that has been wrought by the forces led by the United States and Great Britain, that Iraq can recover on its own. History has shown that. As you said, this is a farce. It's not actually an end to the military occupation of Iraq. It's a maintained military and economic occupation with, as I've read, 16,000 US military personnel, in addition to mercenaries, in addition to CIA and other operatives that are operating in Iraq under the guise of organizations like US Aid which have long time been used as cover for the CIA. Press TV: Adding to your list, what remains for the question of the Mujaheddin Khalq Organization - the terrorist organization operating on Iraqi soil? Wasfi: I'll repeat again that the largest terrorist organization that's operating on Iraqi soil is the US military. Iraq's borders have been blown wide open since March 19th, 2003. Anyone and everyone has access to Iraq. Iran has a very strong influence in Iraq today. But the only future of Iraq, it is only up to the Iraqis, just as the future of Syria is up to the Syrians, just as the future of Iran is only up to Iran. And the future of the US is up to the Americans. And for all of these countries, no more interference by Israeli politics.

US officials have warned that Americans joining militants fighting to topple the Syrian government pose a security threat at home. Federal officials say American militants could become radicalized by al-Qaeda-linked militant groups and return to the US as security risks. The State Department says it has no estimates of how many Americans have taken up weapons in the nearly 3-year-old conflict. But analysts put the number at two dozen. So far this year, three US residents have been charged with planning to fight alongside the terrorist group, al-Nusrah Front in Syria. The US and some of its Arab allies including Saudi Arabia have openly supported an armed opposition in Syria and called for a regime change.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made fresh allegations about Iran\'s nuclear energy program, claiming that it is the biggest threat to global security. The Israeli prime minister made the remarks during a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is on a two-day trip to Tel Aviv. He added that he wants to hold discussions with the German chancellor on ways to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Israel itself possesses at least 200 nuclear warheads. In contrast, Iran is a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and the International Atomic Energy Agency has conducted numerous inspections of its nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence of diversion.
