The army issued a statement saying its soldiers only fired rubber coated steel bullets against what they described as a "violent and illegal riot" in the village. However, men died when they were hit by what doctors say were live rounds. Israel reportedly plans to launch an investigation.

Ahmadinejad hails petrol self-sufficiency - Complete Speech - Oct16-2010 - English Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has downplayed sanctions against the country, saying threats made Iran move towards gasoline self-sufficiency. "They (the enemies) wanted to threaten a great nation through imposing sanctions on gasoline and they thought they could impose their policies on our country," ISNA quoted Ahmadinejad as saying in a meeting with Iranian oil industry officials and experts on Saturday. "Today we announce that we have reached self-sufficiency in the production of gasoline. It is a big event which displayed the capabilities of our experts both in the oil industry and in the international arena," he added. He slammed arrogant powers for their dominance over the world's economy, science and technology, saying, "Arrogant countries do not know that the world [equations] has changed. This is the reason they committed big mistakes in the face of the Iranian nation." Ahmadinejad went on to say that Iran has done nothing wrong in its nuclear program as it has always abided by all mutual agreements and the regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Iran became self-sufficient in gasoline production under circumstances that the United Nations Security Council had imposed four rounds of sanctions on the country over allegations that Tehran is pursuing a nuclear weapons program. Iran says its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and within the framework of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, to which it is a signatory. The IAEA, in its several reports, has also verified the country's non-diversion from peaceful purposes

Bahraini security forces have opened fire on anti-government protesters gathered in the capital, Manama. Hundreds of mourners were marching towards Pearl Roundabout when government forces fired live rounds and tear gas at them on Friday. The wounded were taken to the city's Salmaniya Hospital, where protesters have gathered to offer blood and support. On Friday evening, Bahrain's king asked his crown prince to begin a "national dialogue" with all parties over the continuing unrest in the country. Al Jazeera's correspondent, who cannot be named for security reasons, reports from Manama.

U-S Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman says she has asked Congress to put new sanctions against Iran on hold. Sherman -- who is also the main U-S negotiator in the negotiations on Iran\'s nuclear energy program -- says the pause should be taken to see whether talks with Iran can gain traction. The remarks come days after Iran and the five permanent members of the U-N Security Council plus Germany held a new round of talks in Geneva to resolve issues related to Tehran\'s nuclear energy program. Over the past few years, the U-S Congress has imposed several rounds of illegal unilateral sanctions on Iran to pressure the country to halt the uranium enrichment component of its nuclear energy program.

As dialog continues between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, a group of US senators is threatening to push for more anti-Iran sanctions. Fourteen Democratic and Republican lawmakers have pledged to work together on legislation aimed at imposing new sanctions on Iran over the coming weeks. The bipartisan group of lawmakers includes Democrats Robert Menendez and Republican Bob Corker. The lawmakers say they want to prevent Iran from acquiring the capability to develop a nuclear weapon. The US has passed several rounds of illegal sanctions against the country, hitting the Iranian public hard. Tehran says its nuclear energy program is for power generation and producing medical radio isotopes.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Javad Zarif has advised the US against imposing new sanctions against Tehran. In an interview with Time magazine, Zarif said the Geneva nuclear deal is going to be QUOTE-dead if the US Congress imposes new sanctions, even if they do not take effect for six months. Two US senators are preparing legislation to impose new sanctions on Iran in six months if the deal goes nowhere. These sanctions would target Iran\'s oil exports, foreign exchange reserves, and industry. The senators are making the move despite the Geneva deal between Tehran and the P-five-plus-one group of countries, which includes the U-S. Washington has already imposed several rounds of illegal sanctions on Iran, causing problems mainly for ordinary Iranians.

Meanwhile, two students have been killed in a crackdown by security forces on protesting students at Cairo\'s al-Azhar University. The two died due to the wounds they sustained during the violence. 200 other students were also injured. An unspecified number of students have also been arrested. Government sources have not confirmed the fatalities. Egyptian security forces attacked the students with live rounds, tear gas and bird shots earlier on Monday. The students have been protesting the trial of their peers at a criminal court on charges of attacking the al-Azhar headquarters. Nearly 40 people were injured in similar protests on Sunday.

The UN committee monitoring sanctions against Iran has welcomed a recent nuclear deal between Tehran and the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany. The committee, however, reiterated that all UN sanctions will remain in force until a final deal is reached. The US representative to the UN was addressing the committee\'s first briefing since the Geneva accord in November. The deal offers Iran a limited sanctions relief in exchange for scaling down its nuclear program. A militia group has claimed responsibility for the recent attacks on the camp of anti-Iran Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization in Iraq. The group, calling itself al-Mukhtar Army, says it fired 20 rockets and mortar rounds on the camp. It also says that they\\\'ve frequently asked the Iraqi government to expel M-K-O from the country, but they are still there. On Thursday, three members of the terrorist organization were killed and dozens more injured at the so-called Camp Liberty near Baghdad airport. M-K-O members were moved to the camp from their previous location in Iraq. The group is responsible for numerous acts of terror against Iranian civilians and officials. The organization aided Iraq\\\'s former dictator Saddam Hussein in his war against Iran in the eighties.

Egyptian security forces have once again clashed with supporters of ousted president Mohammad Morsi. An anti-government protest rally was held near the defense ministry headquarters in Cairo. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse hundreds of pro-Morsi students who had blocked a nearby road. Similar clashes broke out between police and pro-Morsi students in the Nile Delta city of Zakazik and the city of Alexandria where two demonstrators was killed and several others were injured by live rounds. The protesters demand Morsi\'s reinstatement. Egypt has seen deadly protests following Morsi\'s ouster by the military back in July. Meanwhile, students of Cairo\'s al-Azhar university have called for mass rallies in the city\'s iconic Liberation Square on Friday.

Five mortar rounds hit a residential area, a market and a parking lot in the town of Musayyib. Over 50 people were also injured there. The town, which is close to the Shia-dominated city of Hillah, had been a former stronghold of insurgents. A bomb attack in the same town on Tuesday claimed five lives. Iraq has been witnessing a surge in attacks by al-Qaeda-linked militants for more than six months now. Reports say over 15-hundred civilians and security forces have been killed since the beginning of this year. That\\\'s in addition to 68-hundred people who lost their lives there last year.
