The Syrian army has launched an offensive in the strategic Qalamun region to retake the town of Yabrud from al-Qaeda-linked militants. Security sources say the army is advancing around the town and is expected to take control of the town soon. Yabrud has been under the control of militants since 2011. It\'s the last major town in the Qalamun region the army\'s fighting to retake. The town\'s located near the Lebanese border and explosives used in bombings in Lebanon are reportedly smuggled into the country from there.

Iraqi security forces are preparing for a major attack on Fallujah to retake the city from al-Qaeda-linked militants. A security official says Special Forces have conducted operations in the city. The army has also been deployed around Fallujah ahead of the operation to provide residents with a safe passage. Earlier, a senior military commander said it will take Iraqi forces up to three days to fully dislodge al-Qaeda-linked militants from the two cities in the western Anbar province. Iraqi security forces have been combating al-Qaeda-linked insurgents in the western Anbar province in recent days. The fighting has killed many from both sides.

As Syrian troops cut supply lines for foreign-backed insurgents and retake all but one town in the western region bordering Lebanon, militants look set to meet another setback ahead of a peace conference in Geneva. Syrian armed forces continue making advances in Aleppo. The army has managed to retake a number of buildings in the district of Layramoun in the city\\\'s north. The area is considered the northern gateway into Aleppo. The army\\\'s advances stop foreign-backed militants from smuggling weapons into Aleppo from the northern part of the city. The achievement is the latest in a series of military operations against insurgents who receive military aid from their supporters in Western countries and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
