UNSC to meet over resumption of Syria talks

Israel's approval for building 1,600 new housing units for ultra-Orthodox Jews in East Jerusalem has infuriated the Palestinians. Nabil Abu Rudeina, a Palestinian Authority spokesman, told the AFP news agency: "This is a dangerous decision and will hinder the negotiations." The Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now condemned the new project, saying it would "widen the gap with the Palestinians and the two-state solution, which risks becoming obsolete". According to Israel's Haaretz newspaper, some 50,000 housing units are reported to be in various stages of planning and approval on occupied land in East Jerusalem. Haaretz says plans for around 20,000 apartments are already in an advanced stage. A spokesman for the Israeli interior ministry said: "The Jerusalem District Planning Committee today approved a plan which has been in the works for over three years. "This is a procedural stage in the framework of a long process that will yet continue for some time. The committee meeting was determined in advance and there is no connection to US Vice-President Joe Biden's visit to Israel." There are still various planning hurdles for the East Jerusalem project to clear, and work is not thought likely to start for at least another two years. Under pressure from the US, Israel has agreed a 10-month suspension of new building in the West Bank. However, the moratorium excludes East Jerusalem, where the Palestinians want as the capital of their future state. Israel's continued expansion of settlements is one of the biggest obstacles to the resumption of peace talks with the Palestinians, now suspended for more than a year despite months of US-led shuttle diplomacy.

Israeli forces raid al-Aqsa Mosque Israeli forces have stormed the holy al-Aqsa Mosque in al-Quds (Jerusalem) to disperse Palestinians protesting against Israeli aggressions. Palestinian officials say the protests started after an Israeli guard shot and killed a 32-year old Palestinian during clashes between Israeli settlers and Palestinians in the Silwan neighborhood on Wednesday. The killing sparked protests in the area in which at least ten Palestinians were wounded. Israeli riot police used rubber bullet and tear gas to disperse protesters and chased off those who sought refuge at al-Aqsa mosque, Islam's third-holiest shrine. There were no immediate reports of casualties or further confrontations. Despite the resumption of direct Israeli-Palestinian talks, the Palestinian Authority says Israeli settlers have not stopped attacking Palestinians in occupied territories for even a single day. Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian Authority official in charge of monitoring settler activity in the northern, occupied West Bank, says Israeli settlers attack Palestinians and their properties on a daily basis. He says the attacks are premeditated and carefully planned. Other reports say Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian farms in the West Bank city of Nablus on Tuesday and took away part of their olive crop. Obama urges diplomacy on Iran US President Barack Obama has called for a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear issue, despite Washington's disregard for Tehran's diplomatic initiatives. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday, Obama said, "Let me be clear once more: the United States and the international community seek a resolution to our differences with Iran, and the door remains open to diplomacy should Iran choose to walk through it." "But the Iranian government must demonstrate a clear and credible commitment and confirm to the world the peaceful intent of its nuclear program," AFP quoted him as saying. Obama's comments come while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has in different reports confirmed the non-diversion of Iran's nuclear program. Iran signed a nuclear declaration with Turkey and Brazil in May as a diplomatic effort to solve the standoff with the West over its nuclear program. Foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey, and Brazil signed the declaration in the Iranian capital Tehran on May 17, according to which the Islamic Republic would ship 1200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be exchanged for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel rods to power the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment. The US and its allies, however, disregarded the declaration by imposing a fourth round of UN Security Council sanctions against Iran. Iran has criticized the US-engineered UN sanctions, arguing that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and an IAEA member, it has the right to pursue and benefit from nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. Tehran announced in September that it was ready to resume talks on its nuclear program, but stressed that any negotiations must be conducted within the framework of the Tehran declaration. Obama's call for diplomacy on Iran comes as major world powers have also urged resumption of talks with Iran over its nuclear program. Foreign ministers of the P5+1 — China, France, Russia, Britain and the US plus Germany — said in a statement on Wednesday that they seek a "long-term negotiated solution" to Iran's nuclear issue.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has condemned the deadly bombing in the capital Beirut and called for national unity. Mikati described as a crime the explosion which killed six people including Mohammad Shatah, a senior political figure from the March 14 Alliance. He highlighted the need for the resumption of dialog among political factions. Earlier, Lebanese Resistance Movement Hezbollah also condemned the deadly blast, calling it a despicable act aimed at destroying national unity. Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the US have also denounced the attack. Tehran says Lebanon\\\'s enemies are seeking to foment sedition by targeting political factions. Meanwhile, Lebanese dignitaries have attended a mosque in Beirut to sign a book of condolences in honor of Mohammad Shatah.

The Israeli interior minister says a settlement in the strategic Jordan Valley must not be given to Palestinians. Gideon Saar said the settlement along the Jordanian border must belong to Israel forever. The area is a main focus of a new round of talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel.
