The Syrian army has launched an offensive in the strategic Qalamun region to retake the town of Yabrud from al-Qaeda-linked militants. Security sources say the army is advancing around the town and is expected to take control of the town soon. Yabrud has been under the control of militants since 2011. It\'s the last major town in the Qalamun region the army\'s fighting to retake. The town\'s located near the Lebanese border and explosives used in bombings in Lebanon are reportedly smuggled into the country from there.

Syrian soldiers have discovered explosive devices and ammunition left behind by militants in the western farms of Qara in the Damascus countryside. The army managed to seize the town and force militants out after fierce clashes earlier this month. Army units continue to make gains against foreign-backed insurgents in different parts of the country. In its latest drive, the army has made fresh advances in the suburbs of the strategic cities of Aleppo and Idlib. Fighting is also raging on between Syrian forces and militants in Ma\'lula, north of Damascus and the nearby Qalamun region.

The Syrian army has confiscated israeli-made weapons in its latest operations against foreign-backed insurgents. Israeli weaponry-- including missiles-- have been seized in an operation in the central city of Tadmur in Homs province. A command centre of Takfiri militants has also been destroyed in the suburbs of the capital Damascus. Elsewhere, government forces have killed several Saudi militants in the strategic region of Qalamun. The army has in recent days gained the upper hand in the weeks-long battle in the area, which had been used as a base for militant operations around Damascus.

Military offensives as a prelude to a diplomatic breakthrough: the Syrian army is shaking the self-confidence of western-backed insurgent groups by taking control of more lands. Areas which were previously in the hands of those trying to bring down the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Syrian forces are only few miles away from a very big gain: To take control of the western Qalamun region near the border with Lebanon.
