[23 June 2012] Pakistani traders protest against power outages - English
This, otherwise bustling city center in Rawalpindi, is giving a deserted look as traders have shut down their businesses to protest against the long power outages. Normal life has virtually come to a halt in Pakistan's largest province, Punjab, due to crippling strike against the ongoing energy crises. Pakistan is currently in the midst of severe energy shortages with many parts of the country receive only a few hours of electricity a day during the sweltering summer season. Riots have broken out in many parts of the country's Punjab province, which is controlled by the opposition.
Angry protesters have attacked and torched public offices and a lawmaker's house in some cities. In his first address to the Parliament after getting elected as the country's Prime Minister, Raja Parvez Ashraf said addressing the energy crises would be his first priority. Prime Minister Ashraf was once in charge of water and power sector and was accused of receiving kickbacks in the rental power projects, a charge he strongly denies. Experts attribute the problem to years of underinvestment and bad management in the energy sector.

Palestine edged past Pakistan 2-1 in the first-ever match at the Punjab Stadium in Lahore, the win taking the visitors one-up in the two-match series.
Although Pakistan lost, the match will be remembered for the 3,000 local and foreign spectators that filled the stands and cheered for their teams, sending a strong message to the world that Pakistan are back in contention to host foreign teams.
The game spirit and excitement in the sport-deprived nation was all they carried as local football fans have almost forgotten the Sri Lankan team attack and believe the incident is now history.
The chairman of Pakistan's Football Federation, the organizer of the match, had this to say:
The Pakistani team is scheduled to visit Palestine later this year for a return match.
Pakistan is among the supportive countries of Palestinian cause. With organizing this first ever football match between the two teams, Pakistan has assured its extended support in all fields for the people of Palestine.

Islamabad A teenage suicide bomber on Sunday struck a religious gathering of the Shia community killing at least 30 people and injuring nearly 200 others in the town of Chakwal in Punjab province hours after security forces were targetted near UN office in the heart of the federal capital. The suicide attacker detonated his explosives near the gate of an Imambargah or prayer hall in Chakwal some 90 kilometers south of Islamabad when he was barred from entering the complex by persons guarding the entrance. About 2000 worshippers had gathered for majlis - a religious ceremony - at the Imambargah when the attack occurred a little after 12.30 pm local time. Thirty people were killed by the blast state-run APP news agency reported. There was no official word on the incident though witnesses and reporters said nearly 200 people were injured in the blast. Witnesses said the suicide bomber was aged about 16 or 17 years and was dressed in black. TV channels beamed footage of blood and body parts spattered on the wall near the gate of the Imambargah.

According to GeoTV report, LAHORE: Two suicide attackers blew themselves up near security forces vehicles in R A Bazar area of South Cantt as crowds gathered for Friday prayers killing at least 39 people including five security personnel and injuring 95, Geo News reported.
"Thirty-nine people were killed and 95 wounded in the attacks," Inspector General Police Punjab Tariq Salim Dogar told reporters after visiting the blast site.
"We have collected concrete technical evidence, which will help identify the attackers. Both the attackers were on foot," he added.
Five security men were dead and 15 injured in the attack, security sources said.
"There were two suicide bombers who attacked two military vehicles within the space of 15 seconds," SSP Operations Mohammad Shafiq told Geo News.
"The heads of both attackers have been found," he said.
Rescue workers and paramedics rushed to the R A Bazaar, a densely populated area of the city. The area was crowded as the blasts occurred shortly before the main Friday prayers were to start.

Raj Patel describes a history of the emergence of global food market which was constitutively tied to colonial expansionism and exploitation. The argument is on the line that India's food deficiency developed its severity - on an unprecedented scale - only after the colonial agricultural reforms and its integration of local economies into the global. The severe famines that we saw were a result of policies and socio-economic dynamics, not production technology per se. In other words, it was a construction of ‘distribution’ mechanism. Later, some invested their hopes in the so-called "Green Revolution", introduced since the 1960s in India. With the pesticides, chemical rich fertilizers, and GM seeds that came with it, the yields did increase, for a while at least. But increasing yields is one thing and food security another. The new technology, policies, and practices accompanying the "Green Revolution" made the Indian farmers even more vulnerable. The problem they now faced was not only that of ‘distribution’ but also of ‘production’. More than a hundred thousand Indian farmers have committed suicide due to increasing vulnerability in the last two decades. The Indian Punjab, which was the epicenter of the "Green Revolution", is in a severe crisis today and, some suggest that, parts of it "could be(come) barren in 10 to 15 years." A closer look at the history of Bt Cotton and Monsanto's monopolozing policies and years of neo-liberal reforms in India should be quite illuminating for anyone interested in this subject.

These are the newly-elected members of Pakistan\'s National Assembly. Members of the lower House of Parliament formally took oath, marking a historic democratic transition from one civilian administration to another. This time, the National Assembly has seen many new faces because of the emergence of a new political party led by Pakistan\'s cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan. But the focus is now on this man. The party of two-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has emerged as winner in the May 11 Parliamentary elections both in the center of Pakistan and Punjab.

Pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan are threatening a new wave of attacks against the government after naming their new leader Mullah Fazlullah.
Fazlullah was appointed chief of the group on Thursday, nearly a week after a U-S drone strike killed his predecessor, Hakim-ullah Mehsud. The new leader is known for his fierce rejection of talks with Islamabad. The militant group has also said that it will target army and government installations in the Punjab province. Pro-Taliban militants have increased their attacks across Pakistan since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif came to power in May.

Now to Pakistan, where authorities have extended a curfew in the city of Rawalpindi, two days after clashes left at least nine people dead and nearly 70 others injured.
The curfew was clamped in the northern city hours after gunmen opened fire at Shia Muslims who were holding Ashura processions. Right now all the main entry points into Rawalpindi have been blocked by containers as the Shia community prepares to hold funerals for the victims. In the capital Islamabad, telecommunication authorities have suspended mobile phone services. Army troops have also been deployed to Multan in the eastern Punjab province where one person was shot dead. Meanwhile, Pakistani government has ordered the Lahore High Court to launch an independent probe into the violence.
