US-Israel ties at Risk? 15 March 10 - English

The new US administration has not shied away from criticising Israel's illegal settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territorities.
And when Israel announced plans to build 1,600 new settler homes in East Jerusalem while Joe Biden, the US vice-president, was visiting the country last week as part of a Middle East peace inititative - the US was not happy.
A senior US official has called the timing of the announcement an "insult".
And Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, had earlier told Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, that his government was putting "US ties at risk" by failing to take action towards renewed Middle East peace talks.
Although Netanyahu has apologised for the timing of the announcement, Israel is not showing any signs of stopping the settlement expansion and the US is not backing down from its tough criticism.

Barack Obama, the US president, and Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, have played down reports of a rift in their relationship, singing each other's praises as they met at the White House.
Obama reiterated his commitment to the security of Israel, calling the bond between the two countries unbreakable.
The leaders also vowed to bring about face-to-face talks between Israelis and Palestinians, but gave no details about how and when that would happen.

To defy Israel's four-year blockade of the impoverished Palestinian enclave, a Libyan aid ship departs for the Egyptian port of El-Arish en route to Gaza.
The cargo ship Amalthea, which left the Greek port of Lavrio, southeast of Athens, late Saturday, is carrying 2,000 tons of food and medical supplies, including sacks of rice, sugar, corn oil and olive paste, intended for suffering Gazans.
"We hope that the Israeli authorities would not ban the ship from entering the port of Gaza," said Youssef Sawani, Executive Director of the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation. The foundation is chaired by the son of Libyan Leader, Muammar Gaddafi.
"I think the Israelis need to understand that we are not provoking any kind of action, we are not in military action, we are a peaceful organization, a humanitarian organization," he said.
Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said he has discussed the ship's planned trip with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Friday.
The ship has nine crew members — six Libyans, a Moroccan, a Nigerian and an Algerian.
This latest attempt comes after Israeli commandos attacked the Freedom Flotilla aid convoy on May 31 in international waters, killing 9 Turkish activists.
The Israeli assault sparked a worldwide condemnation and a row between Ankara and Tel Aviv. Turkey's Prime Minister demanded that Israel apologize for the deadly attack on the Turkish-owned ship Mavi Marmara, offer compensation to the victims, agree to an international investigation and end the blockade of Gaza.
It also recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv and cancelled military exercises with Israel. It has also twice denied Israel the use of its airspace.
Israel has refused to apologize, claiming its commandos only used force to defend themselves after being ambushed.

The Israeli Parliament (Knesset) approves the deportation of 400 children and their families whom Tel Aviv considers a "tangible threat" to Israel.
Those affected by the new measure fail to meet the regime's criteria of speaking Hebrew and having lived in Israel for more than five years, AFP reported on Sunday.
They have been given only 21 days to return to their homelands.
The motion passed 13 to 10 after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to table an earlier proposal, which he said "is much more harsh and dramatic," Ynetnews reported.
The Israeli Children organization warned that the decision targets kindergarten kids and other children, who "will fail to meet impossible bureaucratic demands."

Sayyed Nasrallah: Israel behind Hariri\'s Assassination
Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah accused on Monday the Israeli enemy of involvement in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, presenting tangible proof and evidence of an Israeli potential role in the crime as well as other crimes that hit Lebanon during the few past years.
His eminence unveiled footage intercepted from Israeli surveillance planes of the site of the 2005 murder of ex-Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri prior to his assassination. Several clips, each minutes long and undated, showed aerial views of the coastline off west Beirut on various days prior to the Hariri assassination.
Sayyed Nasrallah was speaking during an exceptional press conference he held at Shahed hall in Beirut\'s southern suburb of Beirut. The conference, attended by media outlets\' top editors and journalists, was set to mark political turning point in the case of Hariri\'s murder and open new horizons that the court could pick up and build on \"if it wanted to be impartial.\"

Rabbi slammed for promoting 'genocide'
The chief Palestinian negotiator has urged worldwide condemnation of Israel's genocidal figures after a top Israeli clergyman wished all Palestinians dead.
Referring to the Palestinians, the founder and spiritual leader of Israel's ultra-orthodox Shas party, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef said on Saturday, "All these evil people should perish from this world," Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported.
He especially desired the demise of acting Palestinian Authority (PA) Chief Mahmoud Abbas, referring to him by name.
The remarks raised eyebrows partially as it came from a party partnering with Premier Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud in the ruling coalition. They also preceded upcoming direct peace talks between Israel and the PA.
The Palestinian official, Saeb Erekat, called on the international community "to condemn incitement to genocide by public figures in Israel," AFP reported.
Yosef "is literally calling for a genocide against Palestinians, and there seems to be no response from the Israeli government," he said in a statement.
"He is particularly calling for the assassination of...Abbas who within a few days will be sitting face to face with Prime Minister Netanyahu. Is this how the Israeli government prepares its public for a peace agreement?" Erekat pointed out.
He said Tel Aviv had "to do more about peace and stop spreading hatred."
The Shas spiritual leader made similar comments in April 2001, calling for the annihilation of Arabs.

PA to renew Israeli talks without freeze
Despite Israel's refusal to extend its settlement freeze, the Palestinian Authority (PA) will still resume the second round of direct talks with Tel Aviv.
The upcoming meeting will be held at Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Tuesday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and acting PA Chief Mahmoud Abbas held the first round of negotiations in Washington on September 2.
Following the first meeting, Abbas warned that he would leave the negotiations should Israel resume its illegal settlement activities.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and US Middle East Envoy George Mitchell will also travel to Egypt to attend the meeting.
The four officials will then move to al-Quds (Jerusalem) for a second day of talks on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama will meet with Abbas and Netanyahu in New York next week during the UN General Assembly meeting.
The second round of Israeli-PA talks comes after Israel on Monday approved the construction of more than 13,000 new settler units in the occupied West Bank.
In November, the Israeli premier announced a 10-month freeze on illegal settlement expansion projects in the occupied West Bank.
But Tel Aviv has repeatedly violated the freeze, which expires on September 26, by continuing to construct more settlement units.

Israeli tanks roll into Gaza Strip
Israeli tanks have attacked Palestinian refugee camp of al-Burage in their second invasion of the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.
The Israeli military claimed Monday that the attack was in retaliation for mortar attacks by Hamas fighters on southern Israel.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties, a Press TV correspondent reported.
The raid came after an Israeli tank on Sunday killed three people in the town of Beit Hanoun.
The Israeli violation of the coastal enclave comes after the Palestinian Authority engaged in direct talks with Tel Aviv.
The incursion is in violation of a Palestinian demand for Israel's complete withdrawal behind the borders of 1967, when it captured Gaza, the West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem).
Gaza is still far from recovering from the Israeli war at the turn of 2009, which killed more than 1,400 Palestinians, most of them civilians.

Israel's FM rejects freeze extension
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has rejected international calls for extending Tel Aviv's partial settlement freeze in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The Israeli official told his British counterpart William Hague on Saturday that Israel would not extend the moratorium in the West Bank.
"Israel has made numerous gestures over the past year, and now it's the Palestinians' turn. Israel will gladly continue negotiating without preconditions, including those related to the moratorium," Lieberman said.
His remarks came after the United Nations, the European Union, and the United States have all called on Israel to extend the freeze to help the continuation of talks between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian Authority (PA).
Last November, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a 10-month freeze on illegal settlement expansion projects, which will expire late September.
Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas has warned that he would leave the negotiations if Israel continues its settlement activities in the occupied territories.
The Israeli foreign minister claimed that the freeze was merely an "excuse" for the PA to thwart the talks.
"Those who look for excuses will find them even if the freeze is extended," Lieberman went on to say.
The latest round of direct talks between Abbas and Netanyahu held in Washington, Egypt, and al-Quds (Jerusalem) ended with no progress earlier this week.

Abbas concedes settlement construction
The acting Palestinian Authority chief says direct talks with Tel Aviv will continue even if Israel resumes the construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
Mahmoud Abbas had repeatedly threatened to walk away from the US-sponsored direct negotiations, launched this month in Washington, if Tel Aviv does not extend its partial settlement freeze -- due to expire at the end of the month.
"I cannot say I will leave the negotiations, but it's very difficult for me to resume talks if Prime Minister Netanyahu declares that he will continue his activity in the West Bank and Jerusalem,'' Abbas told a closed meeting of Jewish American leaders in New York late Tuesday, according to a transcript of the event obtained by the Associated Press.
The U-turn will likely anger most Palestinians, who believe Abbas has backed away from his ultimatum under Washington pressure.
During the meeting, Abbas again asked Israel to extend the freeze for several months while the two sides negotiate the final borders between Israel and a future Palestinian state.
"Let's demarcate the border, at that time. Israelis will be free to build in their territory and the Palestinians the same,'' Abbas said.
Despite the international calls, Tel Aviv has so far refused to renew the partial 10-month freeze on new settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories. Israeli settlement expansion is illegal under international laws.

Iran to build system similar to S-300
Iran says the construction of a missile defense system similar to the sophisticated Russian S-300 anti-aircraft system is still on the country's agenda.
Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi told reporters on Wednesday that Iran still plans to construct the system.
His remarks come after Moscow decided to suspend a much-delayed deal to deliver the system to Iran.
"A decision has been taken not to supply the S-300 to Iran, they undoubtedly fall under sanctions," chief of the Russian General Staff, Gen. Nikolai Makarov said on Wednesday.
"The authorities decided to suspend the process of supplies," ITAR-TASS News Agency quoted Makarov as saying.
Under a contract signed in 2005, Russia was required to provide Iran with at least five S-300 air-defense systems. However, Moscow's continuous delays in delivering the defense system drew criticism from Tehran on several occasions.
Following the adoption of Resolution 1929 by UN Security Council (UNSC) against Iran, Russian authorities began making conflicting statements about how the new sanctions would affect the contract.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said in June that Moscow would "freeze the delivery of the S-300 missiles" to Iran as it runs counter to the new round of UN Security Council sanctions on the country.
Putin's remarks came as Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had earlier said UN sanctions would not affect the S-300 contract with Iran, as these missiles are "defensive weapons" and do not fall under the terms of the sanctions.
Iran has been trying to obtain the sophisticated defense system to improve its deterrence power in reaction to Israeli war rhetoric.
Experts believe the S-300 missile defense system can shield Iranian nuclear sites from any Israeli airstrike.

[English] Hasan Nasrallah Speech on Martyrs Day - Part1 - 11Nov2010
Hezbollah leader says the Lebanese resistance movement will not accept any accusations against its members over the assassination of...
Hezbollah leader says the Lebanese resistance movement will not accept any accusations against its members over the assassination of Lebanon\\\\\\\'s former premier.
\\\\\\\"Whoever thinks the resistance could possibly accept any accusation against any of its jihadists or leaders is mistaken -- no matter the pressures and threats,\\\\\\\" Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech on the occasion of Hezbollah Martyr\\\\\\\'s Day on Thursday.
Rafiq Hariri was killed alongside more than 20 other people in a massive car bomb blast in Beirut on February 14, 2005.
The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) was set up by the United Nations and the Lebanese government in May 2007 to investigate the murder. The tribunal is expected to announce its findings by the end of 2010.
\\\\\\\"Whoever thinks that we will allow the arrest or detention of any of our jihadists is mistaken,\\\\\\\" AFP quoted Nasrallah as saying, adding that his political rivals are \\\\\\\"in a hurry to see an indictment\\\\\\\" in the five-year-old case.
Nasrallah said in July that he had been informed by the slain leader\\\\\\\'s son and successor, Saad Hariri, that the court \\\\\\\"will accuse some undisciplined [Hezbollah] members.\\\\\\\"
He rejected the allegation and warned that the plot was part of \\\\\\\"a dangerous project that is targeting the resistance.\\\\\\\"
Nasrallah also warned that the court had led Beirut to a \\\\\\\"sensitive place,\\\\\\\" saying it was aimed at inciting division in the country.
Western-backed parties in Lebanon accused Syria and the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah of involvement in Hariri\\\\\\\'s murder, a claim rejected by both Damascus and Hezbollah.
In September, Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri admitted to have wrongly accused Syria of being behind his father\\\\\\\'s assassination and acknowledged that the accusations were politically charged.

Gunfire broke out on as Palestinians marched to mark the 63rd anniversary of "Nakba Day" or the day of catastrophe.
Marching towards the Erez crossing, over 1000 Palestinians faced Israeli soldiers opening fire on them. Dozens of marchers were injured including a journalist who is in critical condition as they tried to return to their original homes in historical Palestine. In a prayer sermon, Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyah continued to stress the importance of resistance against the Zionist regime.
Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians held a big rally in northern Gaza to protest the events in 1948 when their ancestors were pushed into exile and driven out of their towns and villages by Israel. These annual marches serve to remind and unite Palestinians as they struggle to cope with six decades of suffering.
Israel has prevented the return of Palestinian refugees, who were either displaced or dispossessed in 1948. After 63 years of displacement, Palestinians say they want the world to know that they will never give up the right of return to their homeland.
