A NEW BOOK FROM NORMAN G. FINKELSTEIN.
For the Palestinians who live in the narrow coastal strip of Gaza, the December 2008 Israeli invasion was a nightmare of unimaginable proportions: in the 22-day-long action 1,400 Gazans were killed, several hundred on the first day alone. More than 6,000 homes were destroyed or badly damaged. The cost of the destruction and disruption of economic life, in one of the world’s poorest areas, is estimated at more than $3 billion.

On the first Friday prayers in Ramadan, the Muslim Holy Month, thousands of Palestinians flocked towards the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem to attend prayers.
But, as is often the case, many were not allowed inside to pray.
Israeli authorities have put restrictions on who can attend prayers at the holy site, but they say they are trying to accommodate as many worshippers as possible.
Special permits are available but just for women between the ages of 30 and 45 and men between 45 and 50.
Palestinian officials say that such restrictive measures do not respect the sanctity of the month.

Israel's FM rejects freeze extension
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has rejected international calls for extending Tel Aviv's partial settlement freeze in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The Israeli official told his British counterpart William Hague on Saturday that Israel would not extend the moratorium in the West Bank.
"Israel has made numerous gestures over the past year, and now it's the Palestinians' turn. Israel will gladly continue negotiating without preconditions, including those related to the moratorium," Lieberman said.
His remarks came after the United Nations, the European Union, and the United States have all called on Israel to extend the freeze to help the continuation of talks between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian Authority (PA).
Last November, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a 10-month freeze on illegal settlement expansion projects, which will expire late September.
Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas has warned that he would leave the negotiations if Israel continues its settlement activities in the occupied territories.
The Israeli foreign minister claimed that the freeze was merely an "excuse" for the PA to thwart the talks.
"Those who look for excuses will find them even if the freeze is extended," Lieberman went on to say.
The latest round of direct talks between Abbas and Netanyahu held in Washington, Egypt, and al-Quds (Jerusalem) ended with no progress earlier this week.

Amid tension and increased attacks, People in Gaza mark December 27 when Israel launched a deadly attack on the territory two years ago.
The attack described by human rights organizations as the single most brutal attack against Palestinians by Israeli forces killed more than 1400 people, most of them civilians, and injured nearly 5000 others. It also caused extensive damage to Gaza infrastructure and private property.
Police officers laid flowers at the scene where many of their colleagues were killed in the first day of the war. Families of victims planted trees , while others including children took part in rallies.
Two years on, nothing has changed for the better for residents of Gaza. The report by the fact finding commission led by Richard Goldstone has led nowhere as Israel has only tried a few on minor charges .
The war was condemned internationally and the UN Goldstone Report found that Israel had used disproportionate force and accused it of war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity.

As children in Gaza live and die on contaminated water, as patients die in Gaza's hospitals due to lack of electricity and medicine and as Gazans experience a 5 year old siege that is stripping them of basic necessities, that is not enough for Israel: During the past 6 days, numerous air strikes have killed over a dozen Palestinians. Where is the int. community in the face of Israeli aggression, and for how long will they remain silent?

[29 July 2012] West Bank under fire - Remember Palestine - English
A number of NGOs including UNICEF and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights as well as Palestinian Al Haq and the Israeli Yesh Din, issued yet another statement on the continued rise in settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The statement which states there has been an astounding 150% increase in settler violence since 2009 comes just a few days after a lethal attack on a Palestinian who was repeatedly stabbed by settlers after just being shot by Israeli soldiers.
A report from the Palestine Center published this year identifies three potential causes for settler violence; it\'s response to Israeli government actions; it\'s a product of demographics and security arrangements; it is a response to Palestinian violence. The report also states that while Israeli settler violence is not new, the extent and frequency with which it is perpetrated today is new.

An analyst says the Palestinian people need to be cautious of visitations by representatives of country selling regimes such as Qatar, Bahrain and Turkey.
In the background of this, the Palestinian Authority permitted hundreds of Palestinians in the West Bank to pour into the streets to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hamas political party. This follows a celebration of thousands in Gaza a few days ago.
Press TV has interviewed Mr. Ralph Schoenman, author and political commentator, Berkeley about this issue.
