[23 June 2012] Pakistani traders protest against power outages - English This, otherwise bustling city center in Rawalpindi, is giving a deserted look as traders have shut down their businesses to protest against the long power outages. Normal life has virtually come to a halt in Pakistan's largest province, Punjab, due to crippling strike against the ongoing energy crises. Pakistan is currently in the midst of severe energy shortages with many parts of the country receive only a few hours of electricity a day during the sweltering summer season. Riots have broken out in many parts of the country's Punjab province, which is controlled by the opposition. Angry protesters have attacked and torched public offices and a lawmaker's house in some cities. In his first address to the Parliament after getting elected as the country's Prime Minister, Raja Parvez Ashraf said addressing the energy crises would be his first priority. Prime Minister Ashraf was once in charge of water and power sector and was accused of receiving kickbacks in the rental power projects, a charge he strongly denies. Experts attribute the problem to years of underinvestment and bad management in the energy sector.

[11 June 2012] Pakistanti protesters march towards PM office - English These members of the Pakistan's main opposition party were marching towards the offices of the president and prime minister as part of their protest campaign against the government.Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz lawmakers have boycotted the parliament's budget proceedings to join the protest rally.They have staged a sit-in outside the President House to seek the removal of the Peoples Party government for what they call its failure to improve the country's economy including energy crises. Pakistan is currently in the midst of severe energy shortages with many parts of the country witnessing long power outages.The opposition party does not consider Yousaf Raza Gilani as the country's legitimate Prime Minister following his conviction over his refusal to reopen corruption cases against the President.The government has rejected the opposition protest saying they should have attended the important budget proceedings of the Parliament.Despite strong calls by the opposition, the government has no plans to quit.

Facing public pressure, the government is exploring several options to meet the country's future energy needs. One such option is to import natural gas from neighboring Iran. But Islamabad is under pressure from the United States to abandon the project.

Appealing to an angry public due to difficult economic and social circumstances, president Morsi started his speech by admitting failures of the presidency in his first year in office and apologizing for recurrent shortages of key oil products and power outages. While enumerating the challenges Egypt faces, magnified by what he described as the Egyptian revolution\'s enemies at home and abroad, Morsi admitted that he had made a lot of mistakes. The Egyptian president said he is working on the necessity of correcting those mistakes.

Large parts of Syria have plunged into darkness after a huge blast targeted the main gas pipeline feeding electricity stations south of the country. The explosion caused massive but partial power outages in all Syrian governorates. The Electricity Ministry says technicians and workers are trying to fix the problem. Meanwhile, in the capital Damascus, mortar shells fired by foreign-backed insurgents killed at least two civilians. In another attack, a booby-trapped car went off near an army checkpoint at the entrance of the Dummar residential area in Damascus. The sound of an explosion was also heard near the main church in the area.
