In a statement on Sunday, Iran called for restraint and an immediate halt of the large-scale Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Israel attacked the impoverished strip on Saturday, leaving 800 people in a critical state. The Saturday attacks are widely believed to be one of the worst in the 60-year history of the Israeli occupation. "The international community is duty bound to defend Gaza civilians in the face of Israel's genocide and crimes against humanity," the Foreign Ministry statement reads according to press tv. "Tel Aviv's bombardment of the Gaza Strip is yet another brazen example of Israel's terrorist mindset and its gross violation of human rights," it adds. The statement condemns the barrage of Israeli attacks on civilian non-military targets as being in stark defiance of the Geneva Convention and UN resolutions. Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states that no protected person may be punished for an offense he or she has not personally committed, hence collective punishment and all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited. The Saturday onslaught came after a six-month truce between Israel and the democratically-elected Palestinian government of Hamas expired on December 19 - and after repeated violations by Tel Aviv. The Arab world reacted in shock to the Israeli incursion into Gaza and stepped up calls for retaliation against Israel. "Today everybody has to stand by the side of the Palestinian people and stop this blind military action," said Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit. Russia and France have also decried the large-scale operations, demanding that Israel immediately halt its attacks on the Gaza Strip. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, however, snubbed international appeals for an end to the attacks and asserted that operations against Gaza will go on for "as long as necessary". "There is a time for cease-fires and a time to fight, and now is the time to fight," said Barak, adding that the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) and security forces have been masterminding the Gaza invasion "for months". In a televised speech on Sunday, Barak confirmed that Tel Aviv may even send ground troops into Gaza to help in carrying out fresh attacks on the coastal strip. The UN Security Council held emergency consultations Saturday night and early Sunday to outline a resolution, by which Israel would be obliged to halt its military operations "without delay".

Immediately after the Israeli onslaught on the Palestinians was under way there was also an immediate reaction from the rest of the world, particularly in the west. That reaction had been quite predictable. The outgoing US president George Bush immediately said that Israel had the right to defend itself. These scenes outside the Israeli Embassy in London have become a common sight. It is here that London witnessed an outpouring of grief over the attack on the Mavi Marmara earlier this year, and here people now stand to commemorate the anniversary of Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, which began to this day two years ago. Over 1400 Gazans were killed in that onslaught - few have forgotten. Protests like this are taking place around the country this week. 2010 comes to a close after months of brewing anger over the British government's domestic austerity measures - this is matched by equally heightened disillusionment over the Middle East process. Two years ago as Gaza was being bombarded, protests here turned violent - and dozens were later arrested and given jail sentences. This sent shockwaves through the Pro-Palestinian movement here. The protest in London has come to an end now and the organisers and fairly happy with the turnout they saw today. The end of December is a sleepy, holiday season in the United Kingdom - a time when very little of political significance takes place here but with Operation Cast lead's anniversary falling at this time each year, it will never be the same again. A new video has emerged on YouTube depicting the latest brutality of the Saudi-backed Al Khalifa regime forces against the Bahraini people. The video shows the Bahraini security forces kicking a door in and firing tear gas into a house only to flee the scene seconds later in their police vans. Security forces on Friday resorted to violence once more, in an attempt to disperse a rally of anti-regime protesters who have been calling for an end of the Al Khalifa regime, a Press TV correspondent reported. The anti-regime demonstrations on Friday led to one woman being killed and several others being injured. Meanwhile, human rights groups have condemned Manama's political ploy in initiating national dialogue, saying the move is aimed at influencing the international community. They argued that the Bahraini regime is continuing its severe repression of protesters despite the ongoing national talks launched earlier this month. Human Rights Watch has also urged Manama to probe the dismissal of thousands of workers from state-linked firms and government jobs over participation in anti-government protests earlier this year. Thousands of anti-government protesters have been waging protest rallies in Bahrain since mid-February, demanding an end to the Al Khalifa rule, which has been in power for over 40 years. In mid-March, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates deployed their military forces in crisis-hit Bahrain to assist the Manama regime in its brutal crackdown on popular protests. Scores of protesters have been killed -- many under torture -- and numerous others detained and transferred to unknown locations during the regime's brutal onslaught on protesters.

The speakers and participants strongly denounced the support of Stephen Harper\\\'s government for the war crimes committed by the state of israel. They condemned the one-sided and unfair approach that does not represent the Canadian values or the opinion of the majority of the populace and vowed to change the political representatives that pander to the Zionist lobbyists. The Al-Quds day rallies were held in over 800 cities in 45 countries and were attended by tens of millions of individuals who are committed to giving a voice to the voiceless population of the occupied Palestine. Every year, the support for Palestine grows and the apartheid state of israel is more isolated and exposed today than ever before.
