Islamic Republic of Iran has officially begun producing crude oil from the hengam oil field shared with oman in the persian gulf. Discovered in 1975 the field has around 600,000,000 barrels of proven oil reserves. Iranian state television has aired footage that showed surface-to-sea missiles being tested. Al-Alam TV reported that three missiles were launched at dummy targets in Iranian territorial waters in the Oman Sea, as well as in international waters. The launches were part of 10-day military exercises, which end on Thursday, dubbed "Great Prophet 6". Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said the missile maneuver conducted by the IRGC in the past 10 days was successful and achieved its objectives. A military spokesman said that all the missiles used in the war-game were optimized by the Iranian experts and are ready to be used for defensive purposes. Iran\'s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says Tehran pursues a policy of peaceful coexistence and closer ties with its neighbors. During his meeting with Oman\'s Sultan Qaboos, Zarif emphasized that Iran holds great respect for Oman as a neighboring country, and is prepared for the expansion of bilateral relations. The top diplomat also called on Saudi Arabia to work together with Iran toward achieving regional stability. For his part, the Omani king said there are proper grounds to expand ties with Iran. Zarif entered Oman after visiting Kuwait on the second leg of his regional tour. He is now in Qatar and may also visit Saudi Arabia.

Four Ghadir submarines join Iran fleet Amid efforts to boost security in the Persian Gulf, the Iranian Navy has been equipped with four domestic-made Ghadir class mini submarines. Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Vahidi hailed the delivery as a sign of progress in Iranian military ingenuity. Brig. Gen. Vahidi said that the stealth submarine is capable of launching torpedoes as well as precision targeting. "The mass production of this strategic vessel has been carried out with the aim of increasing the defense capabilities of the Naval Forces ... and today four advanced Ghadir submarines joined the Iranian naval fleet." The Ghadir submarine was first unveiled in 2007. The 120-ton vessel has excellent shallow depth performance, and can carry out long-term coastal missions. The Iranian fleet currently has 11 Ghadir submarines. Aside from three Russian-built Kilo class diesel submarines, the Iranian Navy also operates another homemade 500-ton submarine in its patrol missions in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. "With the mass production of this submarine alongside various guided-missile launchers the country's defensive production chain is complete, and these capabilities will be used to served peace, stability and security in the Persian Gulf region and the Sea of Oman," he added.

In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year ruling of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. In February, another Arab revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of his authoritarian rule. Other revolutions later erupted in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while other anti-government unrests are growing in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and somehow Algeria.

The United States arms sales to the Middle Eastern countries will eventually boomerang on the US, a political analyst tells Press TV. The US has demonstrated support for popular uprisings in the Middle East while at the same time propping up their authoritarian regimes by selling them billions of dollars worth of various types of weaponry. In its Yearbook 2010, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) stated that the US accounts for 43 percent of world military spending and 30 percent of global arms exports, making it the world's leader in both categories. US arms sales to the Persian Gulf countries has reached USD 123 billion, with a USD 67.8 billion package for Saudi Arabia, USD 35.6 billion for the United Arab Emirates, USD 12.3 billion for Oman and USD 7.1 billion for Kuwait.
