Laila El-Haddad is a talented blogger, journalist, social media activist, and parent-of-two from Gaza. She is author of the recently published book Gaza Mom: Palestine Politics, Parenting, and Everything in Between, based on the award-winning blog she has written since 2004, and contributing author to The Goldstone Report: The landmark Investigation of the Gaza Conflict. She received her B.A. from Duke University and her MPP from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. From 2003-2006, El-Haddad was the Gaza stringer for the Al-Jazeera English website and contributed regularly to the BBC and the Guardian. She has also been published in the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the International Herald Tribune, and The New Statesman, among others, and has appeared on CNN and NPR. In 2007, she co-directed the award-winning Gaza-based documentary Tunnel Trade. A running theme in El-Haddad's writing is the personalization of the situation of Gazans and Palestinians, a topic to which she brings her characteristic wry humor and introspective humanity about her daily life and those of other Gazans.

Koobideh Kabob Recipe: This is sister\'s Sameera and Sepeedeh\'s recipe I made some changes in the recipe on the video! 8 Servings Ingredients: 2 lb of the ground lamb or beef (my mom says it would be best if you have a mix of both types of meat) 2 onions grated and strained (mom says its really important to make sure there is no onion juice. Squeeze all the juice as much as possible before adding) 1 large egg (beaten) 5 medium tomatoes to be used for later when grilling or baking 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon red pepper tablespoon (optional) 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, mom adds it in sometimes. Also if you wanna add fresh garlic, ground 2 cloves into meat mixture.) Directions: Mix meat, onions, egg, salt and pepper(s) wellz Make sure to massage it throughly. Leave in the refrigerator overnight (or for several hours but its best to leave it for longer). Press the meat around long, thick metal skewers. This is the difficult part. Make sure not to put too much meat on each skewer. It\'s taken lots of practice for my mom to perfect how much meat to put on each one. Make sure the skewers are thick as well. If they\'re too thin, the meat won\'t hold. Thread whole tomatoes on another skewer. Barbeque each side for about five minutes, turning frequently. If skewers are not available or barbequing is not possible, kabab-e koobideh can be shaped into long, thin portions on aluminum foil and grilled at high temperature in the oven. Serve with hot Saffron rice or on middle-eastern bread. If serving with rice, add a little sumac on top. This dish goes really well with the rice dish, so make sure you check out this link!

Pingu is painting a picture while his mom is ironing clothes, but then the telephone rings and Pinga answers the phone, Pingu\'s mom rushes Pinga off the phone - it is Grandpa who\'s suffering measles. Pingu tells Pinga not to mess up his painting but Pinga throws red on it. Pingu gets really angry at Pinga and she runs away from Pingu. They go to Grandpa\'s house, but Pinga blocks the door so Pingu can\'t get out. Pingu backs up and rushes the door, but Pinga has moved away and he falls flat on the ground. They all go to Grandpa\'s house and while Mother tries treatments, Pingu and Pinga run around babbling and dancing, possibly to entertain Grandpa, but end up annoying him. Mother lectures them and tells them to be quiet, but they pretend to cook something in a pot and the lid falls off. Mom tells them to stop messing about and again tells them to be quiet, but they play dress-up while Pingu is on a sled and they crash into the drawer. Pingu\'s mom, exasperated, makes them go outside, where Pingu finds a board and puts it above a giant wad of snow to play seesaw. Mother, exasperated again, tells them to stop. Pingu then kicks snowballs into the door and kicks one into Mother. She finally has had enough of their behavior and tells them to go home. They then use markers to make fake spots and then call Mother. She comes home, lifts the bed sheets and finds them all spotty, like the measles. When Mother rubs their heads she finds out they have used crayon and they try it on Mother. When she jumps on the bed in the ending, she breaks it (much to Pingu\'s surprise). They then laugh.

You too sometimes become like a little boy who needs his mom. Women should keep this in mind that their husbands have just been separated from their moms! Today’s young men are a little spoiled. If you see a man who asks a lot for kindness from his wife, this means he has become a little too feminine. No, you’re a man. Be firm. But sometimes a man breaks down like a little boy and needs his wife to behave nobly. His wife should say, “It’s ok. It’ll be alright.” Like a mom. Have you seen how moms act at home? This little girl is another war victim. Aysha has been badly wounded by a US air strike. President Karzai paid her a visit in a military hospital. Aysha lost her whole family when a US drone hit their home in eastern Kunar province. The Afghan president complained to US Secretary of State here in Kabul about what happened to Ashya. But drone attacks continue to target civilians. The US is not willing to stop them and its military men are very proud of their drones. They claim the air strikes target terrorists and there is no collateral damage. People here, however, find their claim funny asking themselves that how can a child---like-Ashya---be a terrorist? Aysha does not know why her dad and mom were killed. But she knows who is responsible for their deaths. Drone war expanded here right when US President Barack Obama took office. Campaigning for the White House in 2008, Obama did say that he would embrace drones to go after what he named 9/11 terrorists. But it seems the wrong people have been targeted. So it is mostly civilians who continue to remain vulnerable to drone attacks. Over 447 strikes were launched here last year, killing and wounding about 2,500 people. This year may prove to be even deadlier.

His existence depended on God. God gave flavor to his life. God was the sweetness of his life. God was what made things sweet for him. His soul didn’t enjoy anything else except God. Is the sweetness of faith something small? Are we just mentioning one of many things that are sweet?!For God’s sake, look at how indifferent we are about what is happening in the world. The Qur’an says, “He is with you wherever you are.” [57:4] We say, “Aha, ok.” “He is with you.” Such a person doesn’t taste this. He is with you wherever you are. He says, “So? What should I do?” “We are nearer to him than his life-vein.” [Qur’an 50:16] He says, “Aha.” Such a person’s brain has shut down! Tell him, “‘Wherever you turn, you are always in the presence of God.’ [Qur’an 2:115] Can you see how God has encompassed you?” But a person still feels lonely. This means you haven’t tasted the sweetness of faith. You should taste its sweetness. Do you remember when you were a little kid? As soon as your mom or dad would hug you, you would say, “Yes! Now I’m in my place. He/she is holding me. This is better.” When I was a child, I would go into my dad’s embrace in cold weather. When he would hold me under his cloak, all the problems in the world were solved for me in his embrace. After growing up, your dad’s cloak was supposed to be replaced with God, but it hasn’t happened. So you thought it’s natural for human beings to feel it’s just them. No, it’s not human beings that feel it’s just them. Yes, it’s… um... I don’t want to say sheep. They feel it’s just them, not human beings. Human beings have not been created to feel they’re alone.
