A Salafist movement confirms that at least 77 Jordanian nationals have been killed in Syria since the beginning of the unrest in the Arab country. The Jordanian Salafist Movement has said the slain militants were fighting under the banner of the al-Nusra Front. It added that there are at least 15-hundred Jordanian nationals fighting in Syria, most of them members of the al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. A very large number of the militants fighting against the Syrian government are reportedly foreign nationals. Latest reports also suggest that more than 210 extremists have traveled from Germany to Syria since the conflict started about three years ago. The Syrian government says the West and its regional allies, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has sent a message to Pope Francis, expressing his determination to defend Syrians of all religions against Takfiri militants. The message was delivered during a meeting between the Syrian minister of state and the Pope\\\\\\\'s secretary of state. In his message, Assad says his government protects all its citizens against foreign-backed militants who attack civilians in their homes and places of worship. He also stressed the significance of dialog as the only option to find a way out of the current crisis in the country. The Syrian president also condemned arming militants by neighboring countries. The Iraqi prime minister has defended his decision to send troops to the volatile Anbar province to fight against what he calls the al-Qaeda-affiliated militants. Nouri al-Maliki stressed that the fight against terrorism would continue in the western province and the army is committed to hunting down the militants and armed groups. His statements came after security forces dismantled an anti-government protest site in the city of Ramadi on Monday. The government said the site had become a breeding ground for pro-al-Qaeda militants. Maliki added that the crisis has threatened Iraq\\\'s national security. In Syria, insurgent groups continue to fight one another. A group calling itself the Islamic Front has killed and captured a number of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant insurgents in the town of Al-Nairab. The Islamic Front, which is the biggest insurgent alliance, had earlier announced that it would fight against the group. Earlier in the day, Al-Qaeda-linked militants killed at least 50 rival insurgents. The insurgents were killed in attacks, car bombings, and summary executions by militants loyal to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as the ISIL. It was the third day of infighting, which began when militants of the so-called Free Syrian Army attacked checkpoints and bases manned by the ISIL. Previously, the clashes were mostly in the northern provinces of Aleppo and Idlib, but opposition sources say the fighting has now spread to the east.

Pakistan launches new airstrikes against militant hideouts in the northwestern tribal region, killing at least 30 people. Military officials say the latest strikes mainly took place in the Shawal valley and Datta-khel areas of North Waziristan. They say fifteen militants were killed in the South Waziristan side of the border, and another 12 in North Waziristan. Militants are using these areas as training compounds for their attacks. Pakistani fighter jets have been pounding targets in the region since the government\'s efforts to hold peace talks with pro-Taliban militants broke down this month. In recent days, people of North Waziristan have evacuated their villages, anticipating a full-scale military offensive.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has questioned the motive behind the prolonged seven-year Washington presence in Afghanistan. "By keeping its forces in Afghanistan, the US has inflicted a heavy financial burden on its economy," the Iranian president said in a televised interview on Tuesday. Washington and its allies seek a long-time strategy with regards to their policies in Afghanistan and Pakistan, he continued. Seven years of occupation have not made Afghanistan any safer, as this year alone over 5,000 people have been killed and US military casualties have increased to the highest levels since the 2001 invasion. Since the US invasion of the country, Afghanistan has also seen a phenomenal increase in the cultivation of opium, which is used to make heroin. The country now feeds the world with nearly 90 percent of its heroin. "Their ulterior motive is to weaken India and China," suggested the president, adding that extra-regional presence can only help create a launching ground for further problems. President Ahmadinejad said the 60-hour assault on Mumbai which killed nearly 172 people and injured almost 300 others was also orchestrated by elements outside the region. "The main motive behind the terrorist attacks, which were orchestrated from outside the region, was to strain relations between Indian and Pakistan," he said. India last week blamed Pakistani-based "elements" over the attacks across its financial capital, saying the terror bore the fingerprint of Lashkar-e-Taiba -- a group blamed for previous attacks in India. "Even if the militants are linked to Lashker-e-Taiba, who do you think we are fighting?" commented Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari in reference to his government's operations against al-Qaeda and Taliban-linked militants near the Afghan border.

At least four people have been killed in two separate US-led airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan. The overnight air raids took place in Wardak province. Local officials say the victims are all Taliban militants with two commanders among them. Such airstrikes are mostly carried out by the US military in Afghanistan with pilotless planes involved. The US says it targets militants in drone attacks but figures on the ground show many civilians have lost their lives in the process.

Foreign-backed insurgents in Syria have kidnapped 12 nuns from a convent in the Christian town of Ma\'lula. Local authorities say the insurgents have taken the nuns to the nearby town of Yabrud. There is no word on the fate of the nuns, but militants are usually known to kill people they kidnap. The insurgents have entered Ma\'lula several months after they were pushed out of the historic town. The Syrian army has been battling the insurgents in the regions near the capital Damascus. The army has cleared many towns and villages of the insurgents. Sources close to the militants have admitted that government forces have been making significant gains near Damascus and elsewhere in the country.

Latest media reports from Syria say insurgents fighting against the government plan to use a group of nuns kidnapped from their convent in the town of Ma\'loula as human shields. The 12 Syrian and Lebanese nuns were kidnapped from a Greek Orthodox convent after the notorious al-Nusra Front militants took over parts of the Christian town. The nuns were then taken to Yabrud - a town under insurgent control north of Damascus. This, as Syrian forces have been deployed to the historic town to restore security there. The militants took over the town on Monday after rolling explosive-filled tires down the hills onto government forces, following three days of intense fighting. The kidnappings have drawn condemnation from the Vatican. Iran has also slammed the assault on the Christian religious site and called for the immediate release of the nuns. It\'s also urged the international community to take immediate action to prevent such criminal acts from taking place in the future.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague says the extremists fighting against the Syrian government pose a threat to Europe. The warning comes as a fierce battle is underway between the Syrian army and al-Qaeda affiliated groups, whose ranks have been swollen by an influx of thousands of foreign militants in recent months. Foreign nationals operating alongside al-Qaeda militants in Syria have stated that the United States and Britain will be their next targets. Ironically, the insurgents have enjoyed logistic and financial support from some Western and regional countries.

At least four British men were killed while fighting alongside al-Qaeda-linked militants in Syria. British newspaper, The Times, reported that three of the British nationals were killed in August as their group attacked the Syrian government forces near the northern city of Aleppo. The men are believed to be from London. The fourth individual was killed two weeks later while trying to ambush a Syrian army position. British intelligence agency MI5 says that between 200 and 300 young British men have moved to Syria to fight against the government of President Bashar al-Assad. The intelligence agency also raised concerns that the British militants would recruit new converts to their cause or even launch attacks in the UK.
