Iran wants IAEA to inspect Israel Iran's nuclear point man says Tehran expects the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to "follow up" on a resolution to inspect Israel's nuclear facilities. Last year, the General Conference agreed on a resolution requiring Israel to open up for IAEA inspection. "This year we hope... that they would follow up on this, that the Zionist regime [of Israel] will open its nuclear sites to inspection by the IAEA and ... that the IAEA will also pursue this issue very firmly," Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi told Press TV. Salehi said that Western countries were mounting pressure to prevent the IAEA from taking action. He expressed hope that the agency would carry out its obligation without taking sides. Given that Israel is the sole possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, putting pressure on Tel Aviv is the least the IAEA can do, the AEOI head added. Salehi's remarks comes as Arab member states of the IAEA plan to present a resolution to the body in the annual General Conference next week, urging Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Western countries, spearhead by the US, are urging the Arab members of the IAEA to drop the request. US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said Wednesday that the IAEA was not the place to discuss Israel's membership in the NPT. Israel's FM rejects freeze extension Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has rejected international calls for extending Tel Aviv's partial settlement freeze in the occupied Palestinian territories. The Israeli official told his British counterpart William Hague on Saturday that Israel would not extend the moratorium in the West Bank. "Israel has made numerous gestures over the past year, and now it's the Palestinians' turn. Israel will gladly continue negotiating without preconditions, including those related to the moratorium," Lieberman said. His remarks came after the United Nations, the European Union, and the United States have all called on Israel to extend the freeze to help the continuation of talks between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian Authority (PA). Last November, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a 10-month freeze on illegal settlement expansion projects, which will expire late September. Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas has warned that he would leave the negotiations if Israel continues its settlement activities in the occupied territories. The Israeli foreign minister claimed that the freeze was merely an "excuse" for the PA to thwart the talks. 'No shelter for Pakistan flood victims' The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says that more than 80 percent of Pakistanis, who were rendered homeless by floods, are still left without shelter. The IOM says it only has enough funding to provide 17 percent of the victims with shelter. "We have probably reached something like 2.1 million people, that is only about 17 percent or less than a fifth of the families that actually need emergency shelter," said a senior official from the organization The organization is taking part in the UN led relief efforts in flood-stricken Pakistan. The United Nations is to launch a fresh appeal for funding later this week to help the victims of the worst natural disaster in Pakistan's history. The floods have affected more than 21 million people and left 10 million without shelter. More than eight-million people rely on aid handouts for their survival. The developments come as Pakistani authorities continue efforts to protect several towns in Dadu district near the Indus river in Sindh Province. A Press TV correspondent says more lives are at risk from waterborne diseases in flood-hit areas. The correspondent adds that millions of Pakistan flood victims are leading miserable lives in the southern city of Thatta and several other districts in Sindh Province. They have taken refuge in graveyards or under trees to protect their families from scorching heat in the outskirts of the city. Survivors have been left without food, water, shelter and other basic necessities in Pakistan as a result of last month's flooding. Rights activists criticize Bahrain govt. A group of Human Right activists have expressed their concern over deteriorating human rights situation in the Persian Gulf state of Bahrain. The Sunni-dominated government has intensified the crackdown launched against the Shia population, arresting dozens of opposition figures on suspicion of toppling the government. In a letter to the Bahraini King, Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the officers of the Advisory Committee of Human Rights Watch's Middle East and North Africa division criticized the government. The group also called on the King of Bahrain to defend human rights activists, saying they are worried about Nabeel Rajab, the head of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights and a member of the Advisory Committee. The government-affiliated media accused Rajab of liaising with "international organizations." The allegation came after the Bahrain Center for Human Rights criticized the government's recent arrests of opposition figures, the activists wrote. In an interview with Press TV last week, Rajab said, "there is a continuous war against all Shias who are critics of the government." Many of the opposition detainees were tortured and sexually assaulted, among them were religious figures, he revealed. The population of Bahrain is predominantly Shia. However, the majority group has long complained of being discriminated against by the Sunni-dominated government in obtaining jobs and receiving services. The Shia opposition also refuses to recognize the 2002 Constitution, which curbed the power of the Shia-majority parliament, and has called for the boycott of next month's parliamentary elections. Egypt detains 154 opposition members The Egyptian government has detained 154 members of the country's largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, ahead of general elections. According to the Muslim Brotherhood, the arrests were made in 17 different governorates just days after the group said it would field independent candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Egyptian security forces, however, say they detained the opposition members over alleged plans to cause disturbance. The group's lawyer Abdul Monem Abdul Maqsoud told reporters in Cairo on Sunday that 70 detainees remain in custody but the others were released after questioning, DPA reported. Abdul Maqsoud said the arrests were aimed at spreading fear among opposition supporters to keep people from joining the election campaign. Meanwhile, prominent Egyptian opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei earlier called for a boycott of the elections. The Muslim Brotherhood has defended its decision to field candidates. "We participate for Egypt's sake," Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Essam el-Erian said last week. "Participation is the best way to expose the corruption of the regime." Israeli forces kill two Palestinians In another blow to the stalemated Middle East talks, Israeli forces have shelled the Gaza Strip, killing two Palestinians and injuring four others. Hamas officials said an Israeli navy boat shelled an area north of Gaza City early on Sunday, the Associated Press reported. Palestinian medical sources have confirmed the deaths, adding that four other Palestinians were also injured in the Israeli attack. The incident comes as US-brokered talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel failed to resolve their past disputes. Israel has repeatedly attacked Gaza since the end of its war on the tiny densely-populated coastal strip at the turn of last year. Gaza has also been under an Israeli siege since 2007. The devotees also make it a point to visit the ruins of the Sacred Jannat al-Baqie Cemetery nearby, which was unfortunately destroyed on April 13, 1925 when the Wahhabis seized control of the Hejaz and the holy cities. The most imposing mausoleum in Baqie used to be over the blessed tombs of four of the Infallible Imams of the Prophet's Household: Imam Hasan Mojtaba, Imam Zain al-Abedin, Imam Mohammad Baqer and Imam Ja'far Sadeq (peace upon them). Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri plans to visit Iran in November in an effort to expand ties with the Islamic Republic, a newspaper close to his political alliance has reported. Hariri announced his plans to visit Iran in a recent meeting of his Future Movement political party, major Lebanese daily An-Nahar reported, quoted by IRNA on Sunday. The Lebanese daily, affiliated with the March 14 Alliance which is close to the Lebanese premier, said Hariri's visit will likely take place in late November. Another influential Lebanese daily As-Safir also confirmed the reported planned visit and siad that Hariri's trip to Iran will likely take place on November 28 and 29. An IRNA report from Beirut, however, quotes an informed source in Hariri's office as describing the reports as "media speculations." While not denying the planned visit, the source stated that the "official date" of the visit has not been announced "though it will not take long for it to be set." The Lebanese prime minister is due to visit Russia on Monday and then travel to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for an official visit. According to the IRNA report, Abu-Dhabi will be Hariri's next destination before his visit to Iran. Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad led a high-level delegation in a landmark visit to Lebanon last October in which he emphasized Iran's determination to expand ties with the country in all fields.

Raj Patel describes a history of the emergence of global food market which was constitutively tied to colonial expansionism and exploitation. The argument is on the line that India's food deficiency developed its severity - on an unprecedented scale - only after the colonial agricultural reforms and its integration of local economies into the global. The severe famines that we saw were a result of policies and socio-economic dynamics, not production technology per se. In other words, it was a construction of ‘distribution’ mechanism. Later, some invested their hopes in the so-called "Green Revolution", introduced since the 1960s in India. With the pesticides, chemical rich fertilizers, and GM seeds that came with it, the yields did increase, for a while at least. But increasing yields is one thing and food security another. The new technology, policies, and practices accompanying the "Green Revolution" made the Indian farmers even more vulnerable. The problem they now faced was not only that of ‘distribution’ but also of ‘production’. More than a hundred thousand Indian farmers have committed suicide due to increasing vulnerability in the last two decades. The Indian Punjab, which was the epicenter of the "Green Revolution", is in a severe crisis today and, some suggest that, parts of it "could be(come) barren in 10 to 15 years." A closer look at the history of Bt Cotton and Monsanto's monopolozing policies and years of neo-liberal reforms in India should be quite illuminating for anyone interested in this subject.

A significant milestone in the fight against fluoride emerged quietly and without major notice from the mainstream news last week. After decades of ignoring the research about the dangers and hailing water fluoridation as one of the 10 greatest health achievements of the 20th Century (CDC), the government is calling for a reduction in the amount of fluoride it adds to public water supplies, citing its negative effect on teeth (dental fluorosis). For the first time since 1962, the standard for fluoride will be lowered from 1.2 to 0.7 milligrams per liter. Because fluoride from water builds up over time in the human body, this reduction will not eliminate the dangers of fluoride-- which include risk of bone cancer, bone fractures, thyroid disorder, brain inflammation, lowered IQ and mental functions, sterility or reduced fertility and more. However, it is a good sign that the powers-that-be are losing ground on the fluoride debate. Further, the reduction of fluoridation is proof that the warnings from activists, critics and health professionals have been heard after all.

After many arduous meetings, the Iranian Parliament has finally managed to pass the fifth development plan which some see as an achievement for Iran's monetary system. The government submitted the bill to the legislative body last year but it has only just been approved. The most controversial article in the bill was to do with Iran's Central Bank and it took a lot of wrangling to finally push the bill through. Eleven Muslim students have been charged with conspiring to disrupt a speech given by the Israeli ambassador to the United States at the University of California last year. The students called Israeli Ambassador to the US Michael Oren a murderer, and continually disrupted his speech on US-Israeli relations at the University of California in Irvine in February 2010. The Orange County district attorney's office charged the students with two misdemeanor counts of conspiracy one year after the event, a Press TV correspondent reported on Tuesday.

Muslim Brotherhood Hails Imam Khameneis Support. A senior member of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood has expressed gratitude to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei for his support of the Egyptian revolution. Kamal al-Halbavi made the remark in an interview with the state-funded BBC Persian on Sunday night. Halbavi further expressed hope that Egypt would have "a good government, like the Iranian government, and a good president like Mr. Ahmadinejad, who is very brave." When asked about the Muslim Brotherhood's opinion of Ayatollah Khamenei's statements on Egypt's developments, Halbavi said, "Many thanks for Imam Khamenei and all who support the revolution in Egypt." Ayatollah Khamenei said in Tehran's Friday prayers last week that the recent developments in North Africa are the result of "Islamic awakening, which followed the great Islamic Revolution of the Iranian nation." The Leader of the Islamic Revolution made reference to Egyptians' fight for "dignity and honor" and noted that Mubarak's biggest crime was turning Egypt into an instrument in the hands of the United States. The Muslim Brotherhood member added that he wants his country to develop in all spheres "like Iran, achieving more technological and scientific advances and becoming a regional power." Troubled Egypt has been the scene of violent clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces during the past two weeks. Egyptians on Sunday took to the streets on the thirteenth consecutive day of demonstrations, called the "Day of Martyrs," to honor hundreds of protesters killed during the revolution in the crisis-hit country. The number of people killed in the Egyptian revolution is reported to be at least 300, and thousands were also injured in clashes that have rocked Cairo, Suez, and Alexandria, according to the United Nations.

Witnesses say police in Bahrain have violently clashed with pro-democracy protesters during the "Day of Rage" rallies across the country. On Monday, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at hundreds of demonstrators in Karkazan, a Shia village south of the capital, Manama, AFP reported. Security forces stepped up their presence with helicopters circling over Manama. At least 14 people were wounded in overnight and Monday clashes. Activists, inspired by revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia, have dubbed Monday "the Day of Rage" to express disappointment at the political reforms of the past decade, which have failed to bring prosperity and real change. The majority Shia population in Bahrain has been complaining about inequality and oppression. The government has been clamping down on the opposition since the country's controversial general elections in August last year. Since late Sunday, Bahrain's security forces have been patrolling shopping centers and other locations to monitor people's movements amid calls by opposition groups for pro-democracy protests.

Allegations of harassment and legal loopholes were raised at the controversial trial of Malaysia's Shia leader Kamil Zuhairi Abdul Aziz. Kamil is yet to be charged although the religious authorities in the country arrested him last December for what they called deviant teaching. The religious authorities told the court that they are yet to wrap up their investigations on Kamil. The government has once again come under spot light following the arrest of 120 Shias who had gathered to mark the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad's grandson in December (2010). The sweeping arrest has sparked fear among the Shia followers and is seen as a specific crackdown against them.
