[07 July 2012] Geneva Meeting Clear or Cloudy Sky over Syria - English The latest meeting in Geneva on the current situation in Syria seems to lack executive mechanism as well as true will for its implementation. The special UN-envoy Kofi Annan says the meetings have not helped his plan, while the Syrian opposition outside the country has failed to form a unified political stance. Russia accuses the United States and its Western allies of trying to distort a previous deal reached by world powers on Syria in the Geneva meeting. On June 30, an agreement was made during the Geneva meeting on a Syrian-led transitional governing body that "could include members of the present government and the opposition and other groups, and shall be formed on the basis of mutual consent."

As the deal struck in Geneva, Switzerland last November over Iran\'s nuclear energy program comes into effect, reaction has been pouring in from around the world and in particular from the UK. The deal agreed by Iran with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany limits some aspects of the nuclear program. But under the agreement, Iran continues to enrich uranium up to the level of five percent. Academics say this is a vindication of Iran\'s policy and a recognition of its rights to peaceful nuclear technology. Over the weekend, Jack Straw, the former foreign secretary, penned an article in the Independent newspaper, praising Iran.

Insurgents in Syria have expressed doubt about the implementation of a new deal reached at the Geneva peace conference, under which the government has agreed to let women and children leave besieged districts of the city of Homs. Insurgents operating in the city have called for a complete end to the siege of the areas, which have been under a blockade since June 20-12. They also say they want guarantees from the UN or the International Committee of the Red Cross that the people leaving the areas will not be arrested by Syrian forces. Earlier, UN and Arab League special envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said Damascus has agreed to let women and children leave the areas. The agreement was reached on the third day of the peace talks between the Syrian government and the foreign-backed opposition in Geneva.

The European Union says it\'s ready to suspend some sanctions against Iran as soon as experts check that Tehran is implementing the terms of the Geneva deal. The bloc says it backs the deal as a sign of the commitment of all sides to build trust over Iran\'s nuclear activities. A statement from EU foreign ministers says a swift implementation of the voluntary measures by all sides is now key. The statement also adds that Iran has to implement its commitments in good faith and the EU is committed to suspending sanctions as set out in the deal. The bloc says sanctions will be suspended after inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency verify the implementation of nuclear-related measures by Iran.

Refugees in the Gaza Strip which is home to the largest Palestinian refugee population in the Middle East held a rally to mark the Nakba Day. The day of catastrophe or Nakba marks the expulsions of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees of their homes prior to the creation of Israel on their lands in 1948. They were displaced from Palestine and lost their land and property. Six decades down the road, Palestinian refugees are scattered in camps in the West bank and Gaza Strip, or in neighboring countries like Jordan, Syria, Lebanon or elsewhere, but they are still holding fast to their Palestinian identity and right of return. In December of 1948, the UN General Assembly resolution 194 called for the return of all Palestinian refugee’s to their homeland. Israel refused to implement the resolution and instead legislated in 1950 The Law of Return that gives all Jews around the world the right to emigrate to and settle in Israel. Israel, which was violently created on occupied Palestinian lands in May 1948, has continued to fight and suppress the Palestinian culture and identity. Representatives of Palestinian refugees met with the United Nations representative in Gaza demanding the implementation of the UN resolutions concerning refugees’ right of return. Annual rallies such as this one unite Palestinians as they struggle with six decades of suffering. [13 June 2012] Russia FM visits Iran - English Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in Tehran With less than a week to the scheduled comprehensive talks between Iran and the p5+1group, that includes also Russia, Russia's Foreign minister has made an official visit to Tehran to discuss issues ranging from bilateral ties to the Moscow talks and the developments in Syria.During his meeting with a number of Iranian officials including Secretary of Iran's Supreme National security council Saeed Jalili and his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi, in which both sides called for an increase in the volume of bilateral trade which currently stands at 3 billion dollars annually. Right after the meeting the two ministers held a joint press conference, both sides said they hold similar views regarding the situation in Syria. Meanwhile Iran's foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi referring to the upcoming talks between Iran and the p5+1 group due in Moscow noted that the results of the negotiations would be fruitful if they're based on cooperation. Lavrov for his part said that Moscow is to invite around 15 countries, including Iran, for an international meeting on Syria. He further noted that said the conference would call for the implementation of the plan by UN-Arab League joint envoy Kofi Annan. Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan for Syria launched in February 2012 is considered as the most serious international attempt to resolve the Syrian unrest. Lavrov's official visit to Tehran comes only days after the Presidents of Iran and Russia met on the sideline of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China. This happened as a result of over 3 days continuous protests by the brave and dignified Shia Muslims of Pakistan across the country and abroad. The responsibility is now handed over to Governor, Zulfeqar Ali Magzi. Sit in protests continue across Pakistan as the protesters want to see the practical implementation by the Government.

French auto giants Renault-Nissan and Peugeot-Citro-en are planning to return to Iran\'s market in light of the easing of anti-Iran sanctions. Reports say Renault and Peugeot are gearing to reclaim their share of the huge Iranian market they lost after the implementation of anti-Iran sanctions in 20-11. Both companies are sending representatives to a crucial auto conference in Tehran that opens within hours. Their participation in the conference has been interpreted by the media as a sign to mark their early return to the Iranian market before other competitors. Renault and Peugeot have been production partners of Iran\'s domestic majors - Iran Khodro and SAIPA. Official data show the sanctions against Iran led to the unemployment of 100,000 workers and undermined the output of the two French giants.

Almost a week has passed since Iran and the P5+1 group of countries reached a deal to resolve their differences over Tehran\'s nuclear program. Under the agreement, billions of dollars in Iran\'s oil revenues will be released by Western governments while sanctions will be gradually lifted in return for Tehran\'s limiting of its nuclear program. However, there\'s still no mechanism to ensure the implementation of the Geneva deal by the two sides.

Iran\\\'s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi says Tehran will respond to unthoughtful and inaccurate remarks by American officials. Araqchi said that Iran will continue nuclear talks with the P-five-plus-one group of countries with goodwill despite the fact that American officials have adopted a contradictory stance since the Geneva deal. Araqchi named blacklisting some Iranian entities and pressures from the US Treasury Department on other countries as examples of that policy. According to Araqchi, comments and actions by US official have been provocative and against the spirit of cooperation, required for the implementation of the November 24 deal. The diplomat noted that Tehran has advised American officials against trying to resolve their internal problems or tensions with their allies at the expense of the Iranian nation\\\'s rights.

Lebanon\\\'s Army commander has warned that the military will respond to any Israeli aggression. The warning was made as General Jean Qahwaji\\\'s visited the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. Qahwaji says the Lebanese military is committed to the implementation of all United Nations Security Council resolutions, in particular 17-01. The resolution, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, demanded the withdrawal of the Israeli forces from south Lebanon. Earlier this month, Lebanon\\\'s south was the scene of deadly clashes between Israeli and Lebanese forces. The ensuing tensions prompted the Security Council to call for calm and restraint by both sides.

Tehran says inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency are set to visit several nuclear sites. The spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran says the suspension of 20-percent uranium enrichment and the diluting of the current stockpile are Tehran\'s most important commitments under the agreement. Behruz Kamal-vandi says Iran will use centrifuges producing 20 percent enriched uranium to instead produce uranium purified to 5 percent to comply with the deal. Meanwhile, Iran\'s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has expressed hopes that implementing the deal will leave positive marks on regional and global peace and stability. He\'s voiced hope the implementation would pave the way to a final and conclusive settlement.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has congratulated all Iranians and other nations that celebrate Nowruz on the occasion of the Persian New Year. In his Nowruz address, Rouhani touched on a number of achievements made by Iran in the previous year including the implementation of the nuclear deal with the P5+1 group and the economy of resistance. He described the two as major milestones achieved by the Islamic Republic. He also noted that Iran also managed to regain its pre-sanctions oil market share. The president added that Iran has scored an eight-percent economic growth for the first time after many years. Rouhani also underlined the need to create more jobs in the New Year.
