A Special Mindset for the Nights of Power (Laylatul Qadr) Why don’t we take full advantage of God’s Kindness? We are prevented from benefiting from God’s Mercy because we count on ourselves. This barrier is arrogance, being conceited about our possessions and achievements. We never talk to God as if we are a criminal, cutthroat, villain. No, we talk to God as if we are honorable people, “God, as You are aware, I’m obviously one of Your good servants. And I haven’t had a fault thus far. But, I decided to turn to You tonight to say if You want to grant me more blessings, sure, I agree! Yes, I have some faults. It is possible I haven’t done as much as I should.” This person is the epitome of arrogance. This person is not able to benefit from God’s Mercy. During the Nights of Power (Qadr) I like to go amongst the crowd of worshippers and see who has come for the first time, a person who has a history of serious wrongdoing! And, he is too embarrassed to talk. People ask him, “Sir, would you like a Qur’an?” When he wants to take the Qur’an, he thinks, “I’m too embarrassed to touch it. I have nothing, absolutely nothing to say.” If I find such a person during the Nights of Power, I’ll go and stand behind him. I’ll say, “God, whatever you grant him, grant to me too.” He doesn’t have a trace of arrogance. He has no pretentiousness at all. Others go back home happily. But, this person is still standing. Towards the end, he will say, “God, did You look at me too?” This kind of person will make use of God’s Mercy that night. Benefiting from God’s Mercy is very hard. Why? Because we count on ourselves. Don’t count on yourself. Are you able to go to a gathering of worshippers to repent like that criminal? You won’t go. You’d say, “It’s impossible. Is it possible?! Thank God, I’m not that bad either.” We are even proud of our deeds, which we haven’t done! At least he has done some good deeds. We tell ourselves, “We still have time until the end of the Month of Ramadan.” “Till the end of the month?! But, you haven’t done anything yet!” “I’ll do something. Don’t worry!” We are prevented from benefiting from God’s Mercy because we count on ourselves. What should we do to stop counting on ourselves? The supplications narrated from the Household of the Prophet (‘a) are excellent opportunities. A supplication says, “God, even if I had done a good deed, I shouldn’t have relied on it. I should have relied on Your Grace. And now, I haven’t even done that good deed. So, I must only rely on Your Grace. What should I do if You don’t look at me?”

My I be sacrificed for how you’re crying. How did Husayn (as) use to show his affection to Abbas (as)? When calling him, Husayn (as) used to say, “May I be sacrificed for you.” He loved him very much. I don’t know how Zaynab (as) used to call Abbas (as). These were their private conversations. Imam Husayn, his Imam, said, “May I be sacrificed for you.” Zaynab was his sister and sisters are more compassionate, tender-hearted and loving. She was a sister and full of affection. For example, consider when they were on the way. It was God’s mercy that detailed memories of this caravan while travelling to Karbala have not been recorded. [It’s as if they say,] “Why do you want to know?” For example, they haven’t recorded Zaynab saying, “My Abbas, get Ali Asghar. Hug Ruqayya for a minute.” I want to say, “O Aba al-Fazl, don’t go into the battlefield. Don’t go. I plead you.” Abbas came to say goodbye. Husayn (as) said, “Do you want to leave Husayn alone?” Alas for Abbas’s sorrows and sufferings. O Abbas, go and see what you can do for Husayn (as). You will have to become a martyr. But at least bring this waterskin back with some water so that you can relieve your sorrow a little by doing this. Abbas had so much hope and picked up that waterskin so confidently that the children felt less thirsty. They told each other, “Our uncle is going to bring water.” “Did you see how our uncle picked up the waterskin?! That’s it. Rabab, hold onto Ali Asghar. Water is coming. The way our uncle picked up the waterskin shows that we’ll have water soon.” When the enemies would beat Husayn’s children while traveling to Damascus, they would call for their uncle! How could they tell the children that their uncle would not return anymore?! He picked up the waterskin so confidently that everyone thought the same. Abbas (as) expected the same. There is a sentence in history books that shows Aba al-Fazl was surprised himself too. When his hands were cut off, he didn’t care. But as soon as an arrow struck his waterskin, it is said that Abbas stood still. O Abbas, you didn’t expect this? It was then that he begged God to take him [due to his shame].

What was the state and condition of the world of Islam when Imam Husayn (A) rose up and entered the battlefield? And why was it a crime for a Muslim to be a supporter and lover of the strongest pillar of Islam – Imam Ali (A)? Besides, what was the character like of the person who had illegitimately taken over the Caliphate of the Muslims? And what was the biggest spiritual calamity for Islam during that period? Furthermore, how is the movement of Imam Husayn (A) still relevant in today’s day and age, and what is the Jihad of our time? And, what is our responsibility in today’s times if we see – once again – that the pulpit of the Holy Prophet (S) is being used to spread corruption and create deviation in Islam? Moreover, what is the true meaning of commemorating the mourning of Imam Husayn (A)? And to conclude, what do the pages of history tell us about the end of those people who see the religion of Islam in danger and do not follow the lead of Imam Husayn (A) and stand up to defend it? The Leader of the Islamic Revolution – Imam Sayyid Ali Khamenei – explains the conditions of the time when Imam Husayn (A) rose against injustice and sheds light on the Jihad of today and our responsibility in the current times.
