At least nine people have been killed and dozens wounded in different incidents across Iraq. The deadliest incident that involved six fatalities took place in the northern city of Kirkuk when gunmen attacked a shopping mall. Officials say the shootout with the gunmen lasted for two hours. At least 47 people are believed to have been injured in the gun battle. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet. But such incidents are usually blamed on militants affiliated to al-Qaeda, who have strongholds around Kirkuk. At least three other people are said to have been killed in separate incidents in Baghdad, Fallujah and Tikrit. Violence in Iraq has surged over the past few months. The fatalities from the start of the year so far have now exceeded 62-hundred.

Gaza Freedom Flotilla came under fire early on Monday by Israeli navy forces in international waters more than 150km (90 miles) off the coast of Gaza. The six-ship aid fleet was soon stormed by commandos descending from helicopters. At least 20 people were killed in the takeover of the Gaza aid convoy, al-Aqsa TV channel reported, saying that more than 50 people, including leader of the Palestinian Islamic Movement Sheikh Raed Salah, were wounded in the attack. The news trickled through the Israeli military censorship which has sought to block the reporting of any information about the casualties. A report on the Israeli radio said the censorship was aimed at covering up the number of casualties brought to Israeli hospitals for treatment. Meanwhile, Israeli Trade and Industry Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer expressed regret for the deaths aboard the Gaza aid ships. "The images are certainly not pleasant. I can only voice regret at all the fatalities," he told Israel's Army Radio. The comments come as the first official acknowledgement by Tel Aviv that the attack had turned fatal. Israel had initially declined to comment on the reports of casualties from the takeover of the aid ships.

The human cost of war is rapidly rising now here in Afghanistan. It has been greatly felt by foreign forces in May as it became the deadliest month for them this year. 26 foreign troops have lost their lives here since the start of May. They are deeply worried now about their growing fatalities. This one was the worst single attack on US forces this month. It happened on May 16th. American forces were heading to their base when a bomber detonated his explosives near their convoy. 12 people were killed---including 6 Americans. Another suicide attack rocks the Bab Sharqi neighborhood in old Damascus, killing and critically injuring a number of civilians. Police say a man smuggled the explosive device in a plastic bag and detonated it in the middle of an ancient market. Insurgents have confirmed the number of dead, but claim the attack was caused by a mortar bomb. This while some unconfirmed reports say the bomber was wearing a suicide belt and blew himself up outside the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox church. A number of shops were also damaged in the blast, but the number of fatalities is likely to rise.

Three more people were killed overnight in fighting between supporters and opponents of the Syrian government. The latest fatalities bring to nine the number of people who\'ve lost their lives in the past 24 hours in Tripoli. Dozens of people have been injured since the battle erupted on Saturday morning. The Lebanese army has intervened, trying to end the violence.

Meanwhile, two students have been killed in a crackdown by security forces on protesting students at Cairo\'s al-Azhar University. The two died due to the wounds they sustained during the violence. 200 other students were also injured. An unspecified number of students have also been arrested. Government sources have not confirmed the fatalities. Egyptian security forces attacked the students with live rounds, tear gas and bird shots earlier on Monday. The students have been protesting the trial of their peers at a criminal court on charges of attacking the al-Azhar headquarters. Nearly 40 people were injured in similar protests on Sunday.

Syrian government forces deal a major blow to foreign-backed insurgents in the Ghouta region near Damascus. Army forces killed over 175 militants in an ambush near the capital city. Most of the fatalities are of Saudi, Qatari and Chechen origins. Syrian army sources say most of them were from the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front. Government forces have the upper hand in the battle against militants across the country.
